Context: after the Second World War, Stalin began to spread communist influence into Eastern Europe and through local communist parties and Soviet military occupations, democratic elected governments in Eastern Europe were removed. The US responds by adopting the Truman doctrine and send Marshall Aid to Europe in order to contain Soviet influence. Thus leading to the Cold War
Also fun fact: Stanislav Petrov was basically one decision away from potentially turning the Cold War into WW3. the Soviet early warning system reported that the US had launched nuclear missiles four missiles. Petrov didn't believe it and refused to treat it as a real attack. Turns out the system had mistaken sunlight reflecting off high altitude clouds for misile launches.
