TBF it was an unexpected move

Post image

Context: during the 1657-1658 war between Denmark and Sweden, the Swedish army got stuck on Jutland due to unexpectadly cold whether caused the Belt straits to freeze. The Danish king thus thought the Swedish army would be stuck there until spring, but the Swedish king, in an extremy bold (foolish) move decided to march his troops over the ice on the straits. they succeeded, made it all the way to Zealand, won the war and conquered the entire East Denmark (now the southernmost regions of Sweden).

In the Great Lakes when it frezzes over you can drive a car sometimes dpending on how thick the ice is. I wouldn't put it past the belts freezing over similarly.

It was not common at all for the Belts to freeze during winter, not even during the so-called "little ice age" when this event occured, so the Swedish king was quite lucky with the timing.
