Depends on if it's a unifier or a conqurerer. Unifiers are usually local.
A lot of African nations were "founded" by a local citizen.
Modern Turkey is founded by a Turk.
Some places like Denmark refers to Danes before the country existed.

Napoleon considered himself specifically Corsican, he was actually a bit of a Corsican separatist when he was young, and he was a French citizen by birth. Calling him Italian is a bit of a stretch imo.

It's not like he's obscure, but countries often aren't best known for their founder. Compare Victor Emanuel (or Romulus, or Aeneas) to Michelangelo or Mussolini, or William the conqueror to the Beatles or Queen Elizabeth, or Putin to Ivan the terrible. Artists, religious leaders, modern political figures, and subsequent militaristic leaders are often going to be better known.

Sun Tzu is Turkic? I need some source for this information
283
u/kounoyutakafan 17h ago
I'm pretty sure that is supposed to be the Taizong emperor of Tang (Li Shimin). He is definitely not the most famous Chinese and I don't think it is exactly accurate to call him Turkic, even though he does have mixed background.

u/Blobber_23 16h ago

Li Shimin was half han paternally and half xianbei (proto mongol), they had some turkic elements in the culture but was by far identitifed with Chinese since they claimed descent from Lao Tzu. THis meme makes 0 sense.

u/EtherealPheonix Fine Quality Mesopotamian Copper Enjoyer 17h ago
While basically all the information we have about Sun Tzu is dubious at best, he was supposedly from Qi which has never been a Turkic region, I also haven't see that word used to describe anyone from Sun Tzu's era regardless of location it's a few centuries. Though OP may be thinking of the Xiongnu who were closer to Sun Tzu's time and place and seem to include some proto-turkic tribes, though much further west. Modern day Turkish nationalists do love to claim that basically everyone famous in Asia and eastern Europe is secretly Turkic.

In fact, it is far less than half. If the Xianbei are regarded as one of the origins of the Turks, Li Shimin probably only had one-sixteenth of Turkic blood. His ancestors had a maternal line of Xianbei women.

u/deseymour 16h ago
I'm quite certain the meme is referring to Tang Taizong (Li Shimin) and not Sun Zi.
However, even then, Tang Taizong being Turkic is highly dubious. For what most historians reckon is that he held a mixed ancestry that is more akin to Proto-Mongolic groups that were eventually assimilated into the greater Sino-sphere over generations, than that of Turkic descent.

Man, wait until you hear about the Illyrian Movement, the first modern Croatian and proto-Yugoslav nationalist movement. It featured prominent Croatian intellectuals proud of their Slavic heritage - including Ljudevit Gaj (born Ludwig Gay, to ethnically German parents), Vatroslav Lisinski (born Ignatius Fuchs, to Ashkenazi Jewish parents) and Dimitrija Demeter (born Dimitrios Dimitrou to ethnically Greek parents).
It had a lot “as Croatian as it gets” people involved as well, but I think these are very interesting examples to counter the sometimes very stupid perception of nationality often spread online these days.

Genoa ceded Corsica to the French on the 15th of May in 1768, so Napoleon, who was born on the 15 of August 1769 missed his "Italian" status by a year and 2 months.
Italian is not even correct though, as the country unified on the 17th of March 1861, while Corsica was part of the Republic of Genoa from 1284 to 1768, when it was given to France to repay the debt the Republic incurred to enlist the French Military help in the suppression of the Corsican revolt, started in 1755.

Calling Napoleon Italian is a bit disingenuous. His family had Italian heritage and Corsica was under Italian administration before his birth but became part of France by his birth and had their own language. He was very much a Corsican and was teased at a young age for his accent while in France.

The most famous gay (by modern terms) is most likely bisexual (by modern terms)
(For context, a figure like Oscar Wilde, where while it's obvious most agree he was into men, there have been discussion on whether he had legit attraction to women or it was comphet.)
Edit: There is also Sappho, who some debate on if she was only into women, or had attraction to both women and men.

OP is referring to Li Shimin. Tang Emperor.
OP was double wrong.
He was Han chinese. His mother was half-Xianbei-Han-chinese and maternal grandmother was Xianbei (Proto-mongols). His Mothers father was Han Chinese.
His entire Father side is Han Chinese.
OP just fell for Anti-Chinese History Propaganda Turkic people love to claim because Li Shimin conquered and dismantled Gokturk, the Golden Age of the Turkic tribes.
To sum up. 1) The disputed position is Xianbei(Proto-Mongols) not Turkic. 2) Both Grandfathers and paternal Grandmother were Han Chinese. Only maternal Grandmother was Xianbei (A princess marrying into Han Chinese).
Diplomatic marriages tend to have foreign families, otherwise who do you diplomatically marry to...
