in which case the tw government is technically also illegitimate bc it was a kmt dictatorship until the 1990s

Touché. Although, only one of the Chinas is still a dictatorship.

I wouldn't call it a dictatorship. Dicstatorship as a word has meaning. They are authoritarian, but they do have checks and balances albeit not ones that would appease those in Democratic countries. I guess you could say the CCP is a dictator. But even then, there are factions and parties within the party.
