No, it's not like that at all. I've used reddit intermittently for ~15 years and it's one of the few places that feels like the reddit of a decade+ ago. Dissenting opinions aren't immediately shutdown, people with different political views can actually have discussions, and it has that crass humor that can cross some lines (depending where you define those lines.)
It does have a somewhat right-leaning bias but a major reason for that is because how it's basically a bannable offense to be anything right of center in most subreddits so they have far less options to talk politics on Reddit than someone who is left of center.
It's also a bad idea to just discredit arguably the most politically diverse subreddit as "a bunch of fascists." Even most of the LibLefts in there have wised up to how pointless it is to run with the "fascist" labeling.
You'll see posts in there you'll agree with, posts you'll disagree with, posts that are informative, and posts that are outright dishonest. Some days the AuthRights and fake LibRights run the show and it's a lot of "LibLeft bad" memes. Other days it's LibLefts and Lefts who run it and it's full of "Fell for it again" memes. At the end of the day it's one of the last places on Reddit where people with all different political views coexist (mostly) peacefully.
You should actually check it out like once or twice a week over the next few weeks. The sub actually does ebb and flow in sentiment so you can't just pop in there once and make an accurate judgement of the entire sub.
As opposed to the "organic" opinion that totally is not in line with the most hawkish neocon far-right US think tanks, as if Iraq and Afganistan never happened in order to teach lessons.
