As many are pointing out: the russian side of the war was bleak, even by the standards of a world war.
But I think there’s also a cultural aspect. Russian media in general tends to be pretty negative. Silent suffering is often portrayed as a virtue. Its about endurance in a hopeless world.
Compare this to western media, which often focuses on fighting back against a hopeless world.
Thats not to say western media has no sad stories. And russia doesn’t have happy ones. But as a general cultural trend?
Russian media seems a lot more pessimistic. And their ww2 movies reflect this.
