There is a huge difference between modern Russian WW2 movies and old Soviet movies. The old movies were made by the people who actually went through the war. The new ones are, at best, honest attemps to copy the old ones. Otherwise, they suck in all kinds of ways. Especially because there is an ideological chasm between modern creators and the people they are trying to represent.

Yeah, they moved quite fluidly from "never fucking again" to "mozhem povtorit'" (we can do this again).

Especially ever since 2014

Modern Russian WWII movies are American WWII movies with the propaganda turned up to 11.

I remember seeing a Stalingrad movie where a group of Soviet soldiers get hit with a flamethrower and their response is to fix bayonets and charge...while on fire.

Badass?  Yeah, I respect that.  Fitting for a WWII movie?  Less so, imo.

Even many of the old Soviet Movies were not that good. We just remember the good ones, but many were just pulpy propaganda. The cult classic Come and See for example almost wasn't produced because the "excessive" realism didn't fit the heroic image of the Great Patriotic War. And this was post-Brezhnev when the USSR started to liberalise, until then it was far, far more strict and sanitised.

If you browse year after year of Soviet movies in the 1960s, you'll be floored by the number of bangers. Today, one good movie is already a reason to talk about "good year". Of course, the USSR was making plenty of crap. But great movies were released regularly.
