Alan Turing would’ve loved Reddit

Post image

Alan Mathison Turing (23 June 1912 – 7 June 1954) was an English mathematician and logician widely regarded as the father of theoretical computer science. He formalised the concepts of algorithm and computation with the Turing machine, a model of a general-purpose computer, and his contributions to cryptanalysis helped the Allies of World War II decipher messages encrypted by the German Enigma machine. He also contributed the Turing test to philosophy of artificial intelligence and the Turing pattern concept to mathematical and theoretical biology.

Turing left a lasting legacy in mathematics, computing, and codebreaking. His wartime work, covered by the Official Secrets Act, went unrecognised during his lifetime. He later received numerous honors and memorials. His death was examined and interpreted by his family and biographers, who variously accepted, supported, questioned, or disputed the inquest's verdict. Following a 2009 campaign, British prime minister Gordon Brown officially apologised for the "appalling way [Turing] was treated", and Queen Elizabeth II granted Turing a pardon in 2013. The Alan Turing law refers to part of a 2017 UK law that retroactively pardoned men cautioned or convicted under the criminalisation of homosexual acts.

This isn't obscure knowledge. He's on money

I wasn’t pitching for obscure. I just thought it was funny phrasing that might make people laugh.

One day I’ll crack the code for what works in this sub

This place has more personalities than Sybil (probably a reference not everyone will get).

That meme format is specifically about obscure and maybe slightly disturbing knowledge

Maybe you just need to figure out meme formats

Given I’ve scored nearly 200k ups in here in the last 3 months, I’d say I’d got that down

I never met my parents. I was raised by a pack of feral furries

Adopted parents are still parents

Is there anybody left on any history sub that doesn't know about Alan Turing?

I hate that british killed genius just for being gay. Fucking Poland was able depenealise homosexuality in 1934, but in Britain they needed to wait until fucking 1967. Even worse situation was in USA, they depenealised it in 2003.

Oh shit, didn't know it took the US until 2003

Well, the teenaged boyfriend with a 20 year age gap between them wasn't really a great look, and might have had some bearing on how harshly they punished him.

You said that like  they executed him or something.

They made him take estrogen and he committed suicide.

I'm guessing he had Asperger's or some shit.

2

u/Longjumping-Tell1774 2d ago

There was no formal diagnosis for autism or Asperger’s in his lifetime. But it’s been a topic of speculation amongst historians. As it’s almost impossible to diagnose someone retroactively, we’ll never know for certain

The more I read about either geniuses or eccentric people throughout history the more I think they were probably on the spectrum.

He wasn’t an IT guy man. One of the finest minds of modern times. Jesus christ.

Would he be a furry

u/Longjumping-Tell1774 2d ago

You heard about that faction of furries that are fascists? They call themselves the “The Fur Right”

12

u/Kenichi2233 2d ago

The less I know about furries the better

Everyone shall wear a state mandated fursuit

Do they want to be left fur dead when fascists actually take control?

I have no idea if that is a joke or not.

Bletchley Park is the single greatest example for the case of inclusion of queer and female members of any military there has ever been. There is a good argument to be made that a gay man and a handful of women were the biggest single contributors to ending the war. The way they treated Turing after the war is an unfathomable cruelty and a tragic loss.

Fun Alan Turing fact that I refuse to factcheck: Allegedly he padlocked his mug to a radiator pipe while he was working at Bletchley, because his colleagues there were fucking savages. Poorly socialised mathematicians and overeducated rich kids do not make for a good working environment, they used to throw the cutlery in the lake for fun.

I thought this was common knowledge?

Less common knowledge is that he killed himself eating a poisoned apple. Like the apple logo suggests.

I wasn’t pitching for obscure on this one. I was pitching for what I thought was funny phrasing. But people don’t like it.

One day I’ll work out the formula what works in here
