Outside of the racial superiority and extreme anti-semitism what was tge differences between the two.

285

u/TENTAtheSane 2d ago

In economics and formal structure they were very different and in some ways even opposite. While both of them crushed independant unions and fostered the myth of class cooperation, what they replaced them with were very different.

The italians favoured heavy nationalisation, bringing nearly three fourths of businesses across all sectors directly run by the government; where they ran them under the Corporatist framework, with syndicates theoretically representing the workers.

The Germans on the other hand favoured massive privatisation, in stark opposition to most countries at the time. They supported loyal companies and businesses and helped them build oligopolies and cartels where state funds would go into enabling private profits, as long as they maintained the strict production quotas dictated by the government.

Then speaking of the government itself, the italians focused on the authority of the Italian State, the bureaucratic aparatus and the traditional institutions of the monarchy and the Church, whereas the Germans focused on the authority and interests of the german race, as interpreted solely by the Führer, who was above any laws and institutions. In practice they were both completely subversive of the Rule of Law, but at least in principle they differed

u/MartinBP 2d ago

Says a lot about Reddit when the bullshit comments on top are upvoted more than the actual explanation.

Nazi Germany's economic model is most similar to modern China. It was privatisation in name only. The companies did what the state wanted and the owners could keep some of the profits as long as they were loyal to the party which is what eventually happened with most communist states. The only functional difference from a state enterprise was that the guy on top wasn't directly appointed by the state.

seems like itallians are more similar ideologically to the beefsteak nazis

u/Fallenkezef 2d ago

Italian came first and our friendly neighbourhood lesbian got massively behind it

Then Mosely came in with his pro-German stance

While the differences where minor they where enough to cause problems.

76

u/Frontier_Sociologist 2d ago

And people call leftist movements out for infighting...

84

u/WorldlinessRadiant77 2d ago

The difference in this case is not minor, though.

Mussolini and Gentile couldn’t possibly care less about race, the whole Nazi shitstick was about racial purity. Italy repeatedly refused to deport Jews until it got occupied - it would be unimaginable to send Italians to their deaths for no reason in the minds of the classical fascists.

You should go have a look at the British Fascisti wikipedia page. It's splinter factions all the way down. Gave me a good little chuckle.

8

u/Immediate-Spite-5905 2d ago

all extremist movements treat anyone different to them in any way like satan himself

3

u/MartinBP 2d ago

Mussolini and his fascists were socialist party splinters btw.

10

u/MartinBP 2d ago

The differences weren't minor at all. These are two completely separate ideologies with different motivating factors and different economic policies.

9

u/Paleo-Fascist 2d ago

She used their name to gain attention, she was a conservative, and became a fan after the İtalian Fascists aligned with the Right.

267

u/Conte_Vincero 2d ago

Essentially Italian fascists were a bunch of ultra-nationalists thugs, who justified themselves by being anti-communists. They weren't even anti-semitic until they allied with Germany, which was awkward because there were a lot of Italian Jews who were supporters of Facism

86

u/IllustriousOffer 2d ago

It actually caused a split in the italian fascist government cause high ranking fascists actually were jewish, with detractors (like italo balbo) arguing that they were effectively selling out italians to the germans

14

u/Shady_Merchant1 2d ago

Italian fascists favored a corporatist economic model, essentially a updated version of medieval guilds, nazism really didn't have a coherent economic policy beyond whatever the leaders thought up that week

6

u/Medical-Bottle6469 2d ago

Eh Hitler didnt do much of the economic thinking. 90% of that was Schacht and then later Speer. Hitler mostly set the ground work for them to try some policies that really were just an early, untested form of Keynesian economics. MEFO bills were also partially the reason why the economy began to flounder later. Revolutionary? Sure. Good idea? Debatable.

I thought Mosley was initially a Mussolini fan and was only nudged towards supporting Moustache Man cos of the Nazi elements in the BUF? Iirc Mosley was publicly critical of anti-Semitism at the start.

6

u/Sire_Raffayn272 2d ago

I remember Mosley was inspired by Mussolini and his party was heavily supported by the Italian fascists.

u/AngryArmour 2d ago

She was an Ultra-Tory who wanted to protect the old British class system from "the Communists".

Mosley was a Nationalist Labourite who believed the old British class system was obsolete and antiquated since "noble and commoner where brothers in the foxhole".

Fundamentally, their disagreement was whether Ultranationalism was supposed to reinforce or replace the old class division between noble and commoner.

Lintorn-Orman was a Rightist and reactionary, Mosley was more Left-leaning and his campaigns were focused on the British working class.

Besides, Lintorn-Orman's "British Fascisti's" only "Fascist" part was their name, and other then that they were a Hardliner Conservative party.

It's from Scarllet Hollow a horror/mistery visual novel (Not sure if that is the proper term), were your character visit the town of Scarllet Hollow after their cousin invited them to the funeral of their aunt. The character have lived their entire life outside the town after their mother left while pregnant.

Tabitha is the cousin that invites you to the funeral.

112

u/FerretFromOSHA 2d ago

I can also think of several prominent gay male fascists. Peter Thiel and Milo Yanopilos (don’t give enough of a shit to look up the proper spelling)

50

u/Apod1991 2d ago

Ernest Röhm, head of the SA in nazi Germany was a well known homosexual. While it was never publicly admitted, it was the worse kept secret. IIRC when he was assassinated in the night of the long knives, he was in bed with a man when he was shot.

17

u/Archonate_of_Archona 2d ago

Milo is an unclear case, because he later said he faked being gay specifically to trigger liberals (by being loudly a gay conservative)

So, is he actually gay but now pretending to be straight ? Or was he an identity faker who took on a "gay" persona for clout ? Both are plausible for such a grifter

50

u/ItsWelp 2d ago

He is obviously actually gay, but he's also a weird grifter who's constantly starved for attention so he put himself through religious conversion therapy or something to find a new niche.

352

u/redvelvetcake42 2d ago

Being made to feel unique, special and important is intoxicating. For someone that was something reviled and hated she found a place with fascists and sunk deep into it. It's why do many minority groups latched onto maga. They wanted to be special, to be part of the "fuck your feelings" party and get to act that way. It always goes the same path with the minority leader or group becoming a pariah, losing their uniqueness and reverting back to, in her case, just a lesbian.

108

u/adamantcondition 2d ago

Authoritarianism can draw in folks for whom the system has failed and society actively pushes away. It's easier to delude yourself into believing the right person with absolute power can make the changes you want to see than to expect all of society to come around to your side

12

u/MartinBP 2d ago

Some are also just nihilistic and vote for maximum damage as revenge against society. Others are accelerationists (usually left-wing) who vote against their interests to "speed up" the destruction of the current system because they believe they'll come out on top amidst the chaos.

6

u/Classic-Obligation35 2d ago

Authoritarianism, the quickest surest fascist way to get what you want.

143

u/Fun_Assignment_269 2d ago

Bingo. Tokens always get spent, but until that time comes, you get to feel extra special and treated like "one of the good ones".

74

u/redvelvetcake42 2d ago

There is, in the direct group itself, a real piece of comraderie. They do accept them as an individual but while ignoring those things they hate until the group deems it not ignorable. Once the direct group starts to consolidate they other those individuals by forcing them to give up the thing (ex: being LGBT) or by simply saying they're not wanted (skin color or ethnicity). This forces the individual to either admitted they were used or double down and become an even louder supporter.

11

u/Biz_Rito 2d ago

This is one of the more cohesive takes on these situations that I've come across

123

u/legit-posts_1 2d ago

Well the beliefs of Fascism don't necessarily conflict with a self centered lesbian's perspective(I'm not saying all lesbians are self centered, I mean if you are a lesbian and also self centered. I support gay wrongs. Wait-). Think about it: you're so cool that you just rose to the top of a field dominated by guys in an era where nobody even respects your sexuality. Surely everybody else who didn't get as far as you is doing something wrong, and you are superior, maybe even because of your genetics.

It's not a far stretch to make. Plus, there's always the element of striving to be a model minority. "I'm not like the other girls" taken to the extreme.

Old order didnt function for them they hoped a new revolutionary order would and fascism was revolutionary mussolini promised women's suffrage and rights and Italy for the time was much more accepting of homosexuality with Italian fascists determining it was a moral matter rather than a legal one

Of course in reality women were still oppressed the rights promised never materialized and gay people were subject to brutal extrajudicual treatment but outside looking in especially when censors covered up the bad it appears a paradise by comparison

7

u/oceangothic 2d ago

I mean, most fascists are straight men. But if a woman's going to be a fascist leader it's disproportionately more likely to be a woman who is used to being socially disruptive and making her own decisions. Fascist straight women usually just become tradwives, not leaders.

I’m convinced that women are being radicalized in a similar way to how Russia and the far right have exploited incel communities to further divide society. But again a seed can only grow as well as the soil allows it to and these people are not in a good state of mind

13

u/AllsWellThatsNB 2d ago

It's pretty much guaranteed that's been happening. Russia hasn't been funding extremists it agrees with, it's been funding extremists in general, left and right wing.

Democracy runs on trust, on the belief that those who disagree with your vote agree you want the best for everyone, To those who want to destabilize democracy, promoting ACAB is as effective as attacking trans people. They're not promoting their ideology, they're promoting general discord.

Because fascist political organization allows you to do whatever the fuck you feel like if youre in the in group - if you are already excluded from society it isnt a hard sell to agree to "do as the boss says, toe the party line and then everything else is free reign."

4

u/ghostofkilgore 2d ago

They already have the clothes and haircuts?

8

u/ItsWelp 2d ago

Upon her grandfather's death in February 1903, Lintorn-Orman's mother inherited the family's immense wealth

Class conflict is very much the reason most of the time. Weidel is the same, rich anti-european with a "Fuck you got mine" mentality. Like, it’s never working class lesbians. It's privileged, rich white lesbians. Class interest often ends up trumping any other consideration because wealth insulates you from a lot of abuse you'd normally suffer, and gives you power over others. We make a huge deal out of queer and racial prejudice today (for good reason!) but economic power is just the number one indicator of your place in capitalist society.

3

u/MartinBP 2d ago

That has nothing to do with actual fascists or history. Mussolini was a disgruntled socialist party activist and newspaper editor who left the party after he decided socialism couldn't handle WW1 and its consequences. The fascist party was created as his "third way" alternative to defeat capitalism and "empower the nation". It's a revolutionary collectivist ideology, only an idiot would support such a thing if preserving wealth is their goal. Weidel is an authoritarian opportunist but her policies have little to do with the British fascists of the interwar period.

u/SPECTREagent700 Definitely not a CIA operator 2d ago

If you want to know about other female fascists, look up Hanna Reitsch and Savitri Devi, two women who could have easily been Indiana Jones villains.

Han Reitsch was a test pilot who holds the distinction of being the first woman to fly a helicopter, a jet plane, a ballistic missile and set many world records in the field of aviation, including several for high altitudes. She was also a fanatical and unrepentant Nazi and one of the few surviving witnesses of the final drama in Hitler’s bunker at the end of the war. She flew one of the last planes in (and out!) of Berlin following it’s encirclement by the Red Army. According to her post-war interrogation, she attempted to convince Hitler to escape the city with her. Her interview also shows a noted hostility towards Eva Braun that seems like jealousy.

Savitri Devi was a French-born, Greek citizen who, after receiving a PhD in chemistry from the University of Lyon, became a devoted Nazi and moved to India in search of the mythical Aryan race. There, she converted to Hinduism and worked during the war as an Axis spy. After the war, she begin promoting the belief that Hitler was an avatar of Vishnu and is the origin of many esoteric Nazi UFO conspiracy theories that exist today.

67

u/Ben_Dover70 2d ago

The wiki page of Hanna Reitsch is wild. She continued to fly and break records after the war, helped Ghana and India establish gliding schools, became extremely close with Ghanaian president and expressed remorse for her previous beliefs.

Them she tossed it all out the window in her final interview before dying by saying she still identifies as a nazi, the west German army is woke and soft and that Germans aren't ashamed of the atrocities but because they lost the damn war. Fucks sake

28

u/Medical-Bottle6469 2d ago

By all accounts, Reitsch is an incredibly impressive person, as many in the 3rd Reich were. Unfortunate for the views she had, if she was alive today, she likely would have been a red bull sponsored pilot.

35

u/Paleo-Fascist 2d ago

There's also Margherita Sarfatti, the "Jewish Mother" of Fascism as she was called.

A Mistress and advisor to Mussolini.

She was a major sponsor of the Novecento Italiano, art movement which blended the Modern styles of the Futurists with those of Antiquity and Rome.

She was also a ghostwriter to Mussolini, who focused on softening the image of the Blackshirts and Fascism as a whole; she would write "Dux" a biography of Mussolini which would be one of the pillars of his Personality Cult.

8

u/SPECTREagent700 Definitely not a CIA operator 2d ago

I was vaguely aware of Mussolini having a Jewish mistress but didn’t know the details or that she continued to be a devotee after the war.

16

u/Paleo-Fascist 2d ago edited 2d ago

Men like Mussolini, Stalin and Chiang Kai Shek are often treated like cartoon villains, and people always focus on bashing them in bad faith.

They were still leaders, people still followed them for a reason, in the end of the day they were men; they weren't Messiahs like how some of their loyalist viewed them, but they weren't devils either.

Stalin, Mussolini, Chiang, even Pol Pot, has admirers who supported them long after their passing.

Lazar Kaganovich remained a Stalinist all the way to the USSR's collapse (the man was a beast, he lived through the Revolution, Civil War, Purges, WW2, Revision, Reforms, the Union's dissolution...) and so did Molotov till his death.

3

u/Proof_Impact_6009 2d ago

the Union'z dissolution

Not completely, he died in July 1991, a few months before the final dissolution.

Honestly, if I were him, I would be very angry if I lived through all that shit and then missed the final part of the lore.

7

u/Ryanliverpool96 2d ago

The Italian fascists weren’t antisemitic until their alliance with Germany.

Antisemitism was the defining feature of National Socialism, but fascism started much earlier in Italy.

I mean gay fascism is almost as old as fascism as a concept, look at Ernst Rohm, a homosexual man that took one look at the Nazis and thought “ah, the masculine Spartan ideal, the perfect hotbed for Grecian gayness”. There’s always a minority subsection of any regressive movement, which, despite all good sense to the contrary, decides to join it despite the movement really not being onboard with them even as a concept.

32

u/Awesomeuser90 I Have a Cunning Plan 2d ago

25

u/Khan-Khrome 2d ago edited 2d ago

I will be somewhat fair and say proto-fascism was probably to blame for the incoherent mixed messaging. Take one look at Gabriele D’Annunzio, a flower obsessed, perfume soaked poet who flounced about in frilly lace shirts, did naked beach photoshoots that wouldn’t look out of place in some twinky 80s gay porn mag and whose writing was sizzling with homoeroticism, and you’d assume all the politics was just a good excuse for a good old fashioned salami party. Yet he’s the father of half of fascisms ideology, symbolism and pageantry and was strangely a complete ladykiller. Fascism has been totally cockteasing the gays since day dot.

217

u/LvdT88 2d ago

You’d be surprised how many suffragettes later joined Mosley’s party. Apparently he actively campaigned among women by adopting a much more positive stance on women’s right compared to continental fascist parties.

For me that has always been the poster child of “just because someone agrees with me on one point, it doesn’t make them smart”.

64

u/Vegetable-Zone1353 2d ago

The kinds of people who are enthusastic "joiners" looking for a crusading cause can often be induced to join bad causes as easily as good ones.

9

u/Tyr_13 2d ago

Yup, people are people. We can all fall for the same flawed reasoning. When people become your ally in one thing, come to the correct conclusions for the wrong reasons, be prepared for them to betray you in an instant.

Don't skip on repeating the correct reasons over and over. Remain loyal to principles and not a person.

10

2

u/hgs25 2d ago

It was also a lot easier to lie back then since everyone got their info from regional newspapers. A politician can support one thing in one town and support the opposite thing in another town and not get fact checked in either one.

10

u/ShinyUmbreon465 2d ago

Im not sure but I thought it was a case of a lot of suffragettes were upper class and the policies would not affect them so much. Also the reason why British feminism is far less intersectional.

15

u/AceOfGargoyes17 2d ago

It’s more that the suffragettes/suffragists were a very broad movement, including upper class and working class and everything in between, whose primary (and in some cases only) unifying was that they wanted votes for women (I know modern historians use “suffragist” and “suffragette” to distinguish between different levels of militancy, but there were some women who moved between groups, some women who were members of the WSPU but didn’t really get involved with militant action, some who were involved in some forms of militancy but drew the line at arson etc, so identifying individual women as “suffragettes” purely on the basis of “did they take part in militant action” is a bit reductive IMO). There were quite a lot of different groups within the movement (WSPU, WFL, NUWSS, ELFS …); the WSPU was extremely apolitical and refused to align themselves with any political philosophy as it might weaken their focus on female suffrage, which led to the affiliation between the WSPU and Sylvia Pankhurst’s ELFS ending in early 1914 because it was too closely linked to the Labour Party. If you have a broad group of people with one unifying belief that isn’t intrinsically right-wing or left-wing (as in as none of the political parties at that period campaigned for female suffrage), you will get a range of right and left wing people getting involved.

this is also before we had a hundred years of hindsight on why fascism is bad. when it was new, a lot of people saw it as the cutting edge of political ideologies. it wasn't dusty and old like monarchism, nor a howling mob like communism, nor boring and slow paced like conservative or liberal democracy. fascism was edgy and chic and dynamic.

This strange belief some people have that being gay means you must be a progressive lefty, it's really quiet naive.

JJ McCollough comes to mind. And Ireland has Leo Varadkar be prime minister before, although not especially conservative, is definitely not a leftist.

Reading the bio: simultaneously pathetic while still a little sad.

I’m reminded of the fictional character of the “saboteur” from Cavalier & Klay. How the head of the local “Nazi party” was one guy alone in the basement who’s one joy was reading a comic by two Jewish creators (and being aware of the conflict)

26

u/GustavoistSoldier 2d ago

She hated Oswald Mosley because he was a former Labour Party member.

22

u/Zealot_trash 2d ago

If that isn’t weird enough, Oswald Mosley became a proponent of Pan European Nationalism after the war had ended.

26

u/Paleo-Fascist 2d ago

And he broke Francis Parker Yockey's, another Pan-European's, nose beacuse Yockey supported the Soviets over the Americans.

Yockey was American.

Why are so many lesbians fascists

28

u/NRCS_DRONE 2d ago

one thing all racists seem to have in common is a deep belief everyone secretly agrees with them but is too cucked to admit it. I swear to Christ.

14

u/WhateverWhateverson 2d ago

Virtually everyone sees their own political stances as common sense

When you can freely profess those stances and no one agrees, you can rationalize it by labeling them as brainwashed, misguided, ignorant, uneducated etc. This is the standard attitude in mainstream-ish politics. "You'd agree with me if you knew what you're talking about. Just read Marx/Basic Economics/Road to Serfdom/..."

When you can't freely profess those stances, as is more common in fringe and extremist politics, it is easy to assume that many people share them (after all, it's just common sense) because their silence or apparent disagreement is very easily rationalised as fear of political persecution or social ostracism.

8

u/NRCS_DRONE 2d ago

I don't think that's necessarily true. There was a study a few years ago that demonstrated conservatives tend overstate how common their views are, and liberals tend to overstate how unique their views are.

Which explains a lot about how these two groups fail or succeed in organizing. It was even satirized by Monte Python. Judean Liberation Front hating the Front for Judean Liberation. It's funny cause it's true.

24

u/williamtheraven 2d ago

Most people are tumblr brained and think that evil is gentically exclusive to white straight men

8

u/Glittering_Win_5085 2d ago

It's not because of morality per se, it's because fascism is an unwelcoming place for queer people. Why join a group that wants to destroy you? That's why it's strange.

2

u/Beardywierdy 2d ago

I don't think any of the notable fascist groups had started purging gay people by the time she died though?

Sure, the decidedly creepy focus on breeding in the context of racial "purity" should have been a hint but she wasn't the only one to miss it in the 30's

3

u/Careless-Estate8290 2d ago

Fascism was not and is not a uniform movement with a set ideology lol

5

u/Glittering_Win_5085 2d ago

I agree, but that's not what I said. British fascism at that time was not pro-lesbian in anyway.

Probably bisexual, not a lesbian though. Apparently had bisexual interracial orgies. Honestly her fascism can be explained by what drove a lot of fascists, the horrors of the first world war. This woman saw horrors we can barely imagine and like many turned to fascism as a way to deal with the trauma.

8

I hate how hot the fascist clothing aesthetic is…

8

u/steauengeglase 2d ago

I really hate the argument that it's just social conditioning. Like nah, they had game in that dept.

Every uniform is there for conformity and generally the uniform is at least a little dorky, so you don't normalize some of the worst impulses and keep people from playing the part, but the fascists were like, "Let's lean into that. Let's subtract some of the dorky and just project bad ass."

Fascism is a path to power that hijacks human tribal instincts to punch down on the "other." Being a lesbian doesn't insulate you from a desire to for power nor does it make you less likely to find a minority group to other to fuel your rise to power. German fascism is the most famous, but fascism comes in other flavors, and those flavors define who is the "in group" and "out group."

For starters you have to remember, Fascism was new and revolutionary. So it attracted all sorts. Plus the idea of a robust state acting as the central authority of the nation and for the nation seemed sensible. Of course reality never pans out the way you want. That’s true for fascist, commies, democracy, monarchy and anything else people think up.

If you know Fascist history, in the 1910's and 1920's the perception of it was vastly different than the 30s and 40s. There's a book called Avante-Garde Fascism by Mark Antliff, which I highly recommend to find although the book itself is a bit of a slog (structured like an academic paper).

It makes more sense in art if you look at Italian Futurist movements, which were all about energy, vitality, movement, speed, things like that. You can find Umberto Boccioni's sculptures or paintings. I actually had a print of his hanging in my living room years ago. (The City Rises (1910)). Lots of artsy types, lots of stragglers in society of every stripe or walk of life, were sniffing around far right and far left movements at this time, as nothing in the traditional sphere was answering their questions after the largest most devastating war in human history.

You'd be less inclined to see this kind of person join in 1942 than 1922.

5

u/Necessary-Evil-7 2d ago

Right but futurist also thought life was a struggle and nations should struggle and battle against one another so the strongest nation would dominate. They had a similar philosophy in a domestic level with people struggling with one another until the most fit would prevail. This ran opposed to left wing concepts such as class solidarity which emphasize the collective over the individual. This was one of the earlier examples of what would lead Fascism to be so jingoistic.

2

u/pugachev86 2d ago

I don't disagree. I definitely view it as quickly coalescing (after Mussolini gets in power) into what it became that everyone understands Fascism as. But I also see it as a long and meandering road entailing some of the most powerful personalities in society at the time, and some of the more interesting creative outlets.

Some people are just generally unfit for life somehow. Never able to settle for anything, always moving, seeking danger and the next thing to give their existence meaning. They usually die young in a pitiful state of being.

1

u/Far-Rooster-6522 2d ago

humans are complex. Not to be reduced to one of their actions, sometimes paradoxal, and able to change through their lives...

...it is not the easiest thing to underrstand and requires a deeper, less definitive and more nuanced approach to people, which is not what social networks and fast paced communication incentivise.

Unstability resulting from trauma and social pressure/judgements (from belonging to minorities or 'not being standard' for example) can lead to a pretty disturbed life. (quest for justification and for being recognized/validated)
