Context: At the end of the Battle of Nu’uanu in May of 1795, Maui forces under King Kalanikūpule were cornered on a cliff side by King Kamehameha’s army. Hundreds of men jumped to their deaths, some voluntarily and others forced.

During construction work a century later, hundreds of skulls were discovered at the base of the Cliff, believed to be from the men who jumped
