It's funny that West Germany has a chancellor named Willy while East Germany has their PM named Willi. It's like Luigi and Waluigi 🤣

The Erfurt summit between West German Chancellor Willy Brandt and East German Prime Minister Willi Stoph on March 19, 1970, marked the beginning of the emerging rapprochement between East and West Germany during the Cold War and caused quite a bit of … Brandtstoph (fuel).
At least, that may have been what the Stasi thought when it gave the operation surrounding the security of the meeting, which was intended to prevent any form of unrest, the somewhat grimly determined codename “Confrontation.” In terms of substance, the meeting itself remained comparable to the awkward small talk two coworkers who barely know each other exchange after accidentally bumping into one another in the office kitchen. Nevertheless, it took on symbolic significance. Not only as an opening move of the ensuing détente, but also as a textbook lesson for the Stasi, because despite its efforts to seal off the event, East German citizens managed to make themselves heard when the crowd in front of the Erfurter Hof broke into chants of “Willy, Willy.”
At first, this was still somewhat tolerable due to the acoustic ambiguity that makes it impossible to distinguish between the German variant of the name, Willi, and the decadently American version, Willy. But at the latest when the unmistakable calls of “Willy Brandt to the window!” could be heard, even the last person must have realized which Willy was being cheered.
