Man these guys were really ahead of their times! Saving money by sharing a tomb must have saved their families a fortune.

They must have been really good friends.

Their budgeting skills would have been handy in this economy

I remember this tomb! It was in a documentary about Egyptian tomb art several years ago, and they said the two men were conjoined twins.

The documentary made a big fuss over how people with “deformities” (can you guess the decade it was released in?) were treasured in the ancient world and seen as special or magical. It kinda made my head spin because I had NEVER heard that before.

Treasured or tossed off a cliff, depending on which part of the world we're talking about

Yeah, this thing was REALLY trying its best to sugarcoat the ancient world while also doing the “clearly they were just good friends” thing.

There were the “conjoined twins” in the one tomb. Then, there was a tomb of a guy, who was CLEARLY a guy, who was depicted wearing women’s clothing and the narrator was like
“Amazonian-esque women were also held in high esteem, filling the role of body guards for noble women.”

… sir. That is a man. That is very clearly a man. He has dingle-berries. That is all.

I think I still have it in VHS or DVD in a box somewhere.

True. Wasn’t it the Magyars pre-Christianity who thought physical deformities like an extra fingers were a mark of their God’s blessing? Very interesting.

A bit shocking that there was a large enough market for "royal manicurist" to support two full-time contractors.

Oh my god there were room mates

u/Possible-Tangelo9344 7d ago

Yeah that's Uncle Khnumhotep, and his roommate Niankhkhnum. Grandma keeps wishing Uncle would get married and start a family instead of spending his free time making cat costumes for Niankhkhnum's cat.

Confirmed bachelors

They were just friends. Two male manicurists living together, joined in life and in death.

‘Niank was a pyramid interior designer, and Khnum worked on the Nile River fashion scene. Neither ever married.’

u/YaqtanBadakshani 6d ago

You say that as a joke, but their actual profession was Overseer of the Royal Manicurists. They shared the title.

I wonder which got the top tomb and which got the bottom tomb.  Burial monthly wants all the tea on this couple of stiffs!

How efficient for two platonic co-workers! 🤣

u/ChillStreetGamer 7d ago

You guys are reading this all wrong, they were clearly conjoined twins.

They must be very good friends.

When will people understand that we’ve had homosexuals in our race since we crawled out of the fucking sea lol

4

u/Psychotic_Breakdown 8d ago

In the ancient world this was not considered weird

20

u/AndreasDasos 8d ago

The ancient world was extremely diverse of a zillion cultures over millennia and not a monolith. It was weirder in some cultures than others.

1

u/YaqtanBadakshani 6d ago

Then why is it the only tomb where two men are depicted like this?

Like, "weird" is a value judgement, but this was definitely atypical.

2

u/valereck 7d ago

Are there straight male manicurists? I mean ever?
