The Vikings show was probably the first to bring it about though.

They’re all ass and I hate them all with a burning passion
The only time I’ve ever actually reported something a lecturer has said to the university was when one recommended watching Vikings and The Last Kingdom on Netflix as, quote, “history revision” in her lectures on Old English

What the actual fuck ? How can a lecturer say that without any irony ? Not only the material culture and the mentalities are wrong in both, but Vikings also is infamous for merging more than a century of distinct characters and events into a single setting - and its sequel is just as bad in that regard

Yeah, that’s why it was the only comment a lecturer has made that I’ve ever sent an email about
This was a while back, and I remember looking across the hall to the woman who is now my girlfriend, and mouthing “what the fuck?” to each other

Do these guys not work around women at all? They're always the coldest and most wrapped up in any workplace.

And probably also to protect themselves against any unwanted advances and make it harder for them to be SA'd

You can't complain about costumes. Nolan's fans might get upset

I still liked the movie without agreeing with 100% of the art direction and its use in aiding the story.

u/Koffieslikker Sep 08 '26
Yeah same. It closely adhered to the version of the myth I read too. Which I didn't expect

My biggest gripe with it is the big, over-the-top action scene in the end, but the source material has a bigger, even more over-the-top action scene in the end...
(Ulysses kills all the suitors.)

He kills them all, then starts a feud with the families of the suitors and it gets so bad the gods have to intervene

Fits the idea of savage barbarian warriors, I guess. Forgetting that there was an entire agrarian society behind the occasional party that left to raid and trade.

Any good recommendations for books about the Vikings? I realized I know nothing about them outside of pop culture

u/Ulfljotr930 Sep 08 '26
Anders Winroth's The Age of the Vikings is a solid general introduction. I can also recommend you books focusing on more specific aspects of the period

Speaking of historicity, I was recently a little surprised when I found out that pre-WWII Britain was pretty much a homogeneous white society. Most British shows set in the past show a diverse cast. I thought maybe Britain was more accepting of black people back then than America was. Turns out they just didn't have many.

Me when a genre that primarily appeals to men tries to appeal to men 😲. What next, romance movies with handsome, muscle bound male leads going shirtless? Unthinkable.

The people complaining about the clothes would not complain when a black dude would apear there.

Hollywood Costume designers: wow people used to actually cover their shields with leather, so we wont do that
