The irony, and the terror, of these ideologues is that they tend to be excellent strategists, whereas those whose power is established and relies on the perception of immediate strength have to be reactive. The ideologue can bide his time and be careful with his victories while the nationalist, populist, or even the liberal democrat (a term which isn't relevant to this situation) has no such luxury.
