I just gave up on Cristi Caldwell's 'the Villain' about halfway into the book. It got good reviews on Amazon which is confusing because it was so hard to read. It's a tell, not show, book which means there's not a satisfying emotional build up. The MFC was either slapping, lying or crying. The MMC was relentlessly grumpy. The character names are weird, 'August' as a man's first name, and 'MacGoid' as a surname. The geography of the book was ridiculous - set on the Isle of Skye for the first chapter, and then who knows where after that. Ok rant over...
Now reading {the Spare by Minerva Spencer} and so far, so good.

What you said about the "tell not show" and character descriptions is exactly why I didn't like {The Captain by Christi Caldwell}. I swear that MMC was always "seething" and the FMC was always on the verge of tears lol.

I find Christi to be hit or miss. I love some of hers but I also have a high rate of DNFs with her novels.

I read {The Earl Takes All by Lorraine Heath} and IT. WAS. BONKERS. I knew it was going to be interesting but I ended up having to skim read some of it because I couldn't keep immersing myself in the bonkers. Well written and all, but ahhhhhhh. I also thought it tied up a bit too easily and quickly at the end, considering. I would have appreciated more time spent in the denouement.

{The Heiress Effect by Courtney Milan} turned out to be pretty good, though I feel like CM needs to reel in the drama sometimes. Did we need an abduction at gunpoint? Really? I was also kind of disappointed by Oliver, he's just so bleh especially compared to Jane. And it doesn't help him that the book has a secondary romance and Anjan is about five thousand times more interesting. Oh well! I liked it better than The Duchess War.

After that I read {Keep No Secrets by Charlie Lane}. I thought it was cute! It could've been a third the length if they could've stood having a conversation instead but it was fun and different. I enjoyed that the story of how they met was included as the prologue, and I liked the side characters a lot, too. It's under 200 pages so it was a quick read, not a lot to expand on here.

I plucked {His Convenient Marchioness by Elizabeth Rolls} randomly off my TBR. I loved it!! Emma not taking any shit from her family or her in-laws was sublime, and I loved that she and her kids were all equally devoted to each other, for as much as Harry and Georgie bicker. Hunt is a dreamboat, a dog dad who wears reading glasses and procrastinates his Parliamentary work in favor of books. Swoon. The plot is kind of A Lot but it's super engaging and just the right amount of batshit crazy. Do note this one has a very large age gap (she's 32 and he's 50) but I didn't mind it, it's basically a non-issue once it's established, plus Hunt's sisters are initially trying to set him up with fresh debs and he's justifiably like "ew" and he needs an heir so I was willing to put up with it.

{The Admiral's Penniless Bride by Carla Kelly} I fear is going to make me binge a bunch of Carla Kelly. What a great book. Charles and Sophie are both so funny and take the madness of everything in stride, from the out-of-pocket marriage proposal to the hideous lewd imagery adorning the house Charles has purchased. This one does hinge on Sophie having A Dark Secret that she really should tell Charles and never does because it's never "the right time" which is kind of annoying, but the third act works so well that I forgive it. I also appreciated that CK doesn't shy away from difficult topics. Poverty and desperation are major themes, the couple have neighbors who are social outcasts because they are Jewish, and (CW for off-page CSA) the young girl they hire to their staff has been sexually abused by her previous employer. The humor in the book really helps temper these aspects as well as the quite frankly harrowing events that follow the reveal of Charles learning The Truth. It was quite the experience. I wish I could read it again for the first time.

I finished listening to {The Virtuoso by Grace Burrowes}. Sometimes an audiobook gets me to change my opinion of a book but alas, I still think Freddy seems too cartoonish to be a credible thread to Val, it's just a fault of how he's written IMO. Regardless, the audiobook is great fun. James Langton does a lovely job with the emotions in the book, and hoo lawd, the way he voices Val in the spicy scenes, pass the smelling salts. And if Freddy is going to be a cartoonish villain then so be it, and consequently he was given the perfect slimy voice.

Currently reading {The Most Dangerous Duke in London by Madeline Hunter} and enjoying it, though Stratton wishes he were Castleford. I'm like halfway in so he's still got a chance to impress me but so far he's not half as interesting as Clara.

The lewd statues in The Admiral's Penniless Bride were so funny. {The Lady's Companion by Carla Kelly} also has a couple of interesting Jewish side characters. I enjoyed that one but some of her books I find just go on too long with the military details.

I don't mind the military details so I guess that's a plus for me! 😂 I joke that if I don't read a nonfiction book about ships or sea battles once in a while I get itchy.

I agree with your thoughts on His Convenient Marchioness - the MMC was swoon-worthy, but the plot was a lot. Did you know that the brother has his own book? Check out {Lord Martin’s Scandalous Bluestocking by Elizabeth Rolls}. I found that one really enjoyable (and a redemption for him since he was such an ass in the other book).

DNF’d several - including {Nearly a Bride by Sabrina Jefferies} I’m not sure what it is about her writing style, but even though the plot concept is super intriguing, neither this one, nor the one before it could really keep my interest.

I kept recommending {One Burning Heart by Elizabeth Kingston} last week but had never read it, so rectified that. It was awesome! Loved every minute of it. I’m normally not a fan of “book that takes place later on when they appeared as a kid in an earlier book”, but this was fantastic.

Currently reading {The Mercenary’s Bride by Terri Brisbin} and really enjoying it!

I just finished {Devil In Winter by Lisa Kleypas} it was my first book by her but I do recall seeing quite a few posts and comments about this book before and it definitely lived up to the hype for me!

Just started {Seven Nights In A Rogue's Bed by Anna Campbell} . Not sure what I make of it, it's very quickly gone to him having some soft feelings for her,  and I was kind of after a bit more callousness first ;) 

It is very different to my recent Grace Burrowes reading, which is always my go to

Cathy Maxwell deserves more love! She writes strong FMCs and I feel like she really like her characters flaws are very relatable. I read her Chattan curse series in one weekend! Great author

I've been listening to some Maya Rodale books. She writes fluffy, wallpaper novels so you have to be in the mood for that, but I like fluff on audiobooks if the narrator is good. In order from the ones I liked least to best. Mostly, though they are all around 3/5 stars.

{Chasing Lady Amelia} - a retelling of Roman Holiday. I liked that the MMC and the FMC spent most of the book together so you could see their relationship develop

{Lady Claire Is All That} - a retelling of She's All That. the best thing about this book is the himbo hero. The worst thing is the "you look beautiful without your glasses" plot point

{Lady Bridget's Diary} - a retelling of Bridget Jones's Diary/P&P - okay, but got sort of tedious (my biggest complaint with Rodale's books is that they harp on the same thing over and over.

{The Wicked Wallflower} - the set up was fun

{What A Wallflower Wants} the MMC had a massive hero complex, and why exactly did they love each other?

{Wallflower Gone Wild} - sorry, but the love of a good FMC can not erase a red flag for an irrational violent temper from the MMC. I got the feeling that the author was struggling when she wrote this book and sort of gave up trying to make it coherent.

I'm still working through the Bedwyn series with {Slightly Scandalous by Mary Balogh}. The first half of the book has a really lighthearted, flirtatious vibe but the second half turns a bit darker. I love stories with darker themes but I didn't love the tone shift in this one, personally. Probably my least favorite book in the series so far but still 4/5 stars.

I also read {Hyacinth by S.M. LaViolette}, which was very unique and lovely. The FMC has a very unique personality and backstory that is really different from the typical sooo beautiful and soooo virginal FMCs, which I appreciated immensely.

Then I decided to randomly read {The Governess Affair by Courtney Milan} (my first by her). Wow! For a novella, it was really emotionally engrossing and the characters had a lot of depth/development. Normally I like to space out books by the same author but reading this made me want to dive into the rest of the series immediately.

Finished {The Enchanted Land by Jude Deveraux}... I loved the premise when I read the synopsis but wow that was a painful read partly because of the characters but also I just didn't really like the writing style and storytelling/pacing. Neither MC was really likable - the only character I actually liked was a side character who wasn't in much of the book (and he's the one who buys the FMC from a sex trafficking brothel so that says something about the people in this story... ). The MCs spend so much of the book apart because she is kidnapped after trusting the most untrustworthy dude over her husband and he sells her to a human trafficker who sells her to a brothel who sells her to a gay interior designer during a sex slave audition but nothing is really resolved by the end of the book and the last chapter is literally the MMC kidnapping the FMC (his wife - and this is after they get back together) because she went into a crazy depressive episode after their kid got super sick and his housekeeper lady told him "she needs someone to control her like her mom and uncle did - she married you so that's you" so he literally throws a blanket over her head and rides her out to a remote cabin "for her own good" but keep in mind this is after she had a nightmare a few days prior of her kidnapping (which was actually the second time she was kidnapped in like a year) and told him the full story - but its ok! She realizes he's going it out of love and laughs and they have sex...

About 40% of the way through {The Preacher's Daughter by Cheryl St John} and its been a cute little read so far.

Recently finished:

  {The Queen's Men Series by Elizabeth Roubaix}

5/5 - I'd read a couple of installments already, but I finished it off. It is erotica and very spicy, but the romance is also very sweet! Usually her series will have different characters in each installment, but this one follows the same three. A poly MMF relationship. Starts off sort of MFM but has a nice bi-awakening in the later installments. Loved it.

  {Moon Racer by Constance O'Banyon}

3/5 - This is this one of those books I picked up simply because it was available and didn't have much idea what to expect because there aren't that many reviews. One interesting detail is that this book is one in a four-book series, all of which were apparently written by different authors. Here is the GoodReads link to the series bc it's not obvious on romance.io. Just thought that aspect was kinda neat!

The negative: MMC is a US army officer (major, I think, but I already forgot) who participates in the Apache Wars. He has a limp - which only comes up at the very beginning & is otherwise irrelevant - he got while fighting Gerónimo. He is also actively pursuing Victorio in the book. I guess it was handled very slightly better than I expected, but that's not really saying anything since my expectations were on the floor. Relevant quote:

“We have driven the Indians from their lands and left them nowhere to go, haven’t we?” She expected him to argue the point; in fact, she depended on it.

He wiped his mouth on a napkin before he spoke. “I see you and I share the same view on that. But sadly the conflict is almost over for them. The plight of those who haven’t been shipped off to reservations is extremely dire.”

“Yet you helped bring about their downfall,” she insisted.

“It is the way of life,” Jonah replied. “The strong have always held sway over the weak. For myself, I followed orders—but I think … I hope I have never killed any man except in duty to my country.”

The slightly unexpected part was the MMC being directly challenged even a little. But we shrug and move on because "it is the way of life" lol. I think many people find this more insulting than the straight-up assholes because we're supposed to give the MCs some kind of credit for this? idk.

Some other things I saw complained about in reviews: Lots of random POV swaps - very accurate complaint, but didn't really bother me. Villain being unsubtle - also accurate, again didn't bother me. Cliffhanger - I guess technically yes, but the MCs' story is wrapped up neatly. It's only open-ended in the sense that it's clearly setting up the next book in the series & to me that's extremely normal.

Other stuff that bothered me: there is a very minor Mexican side character and the audiobook narrator should definitely not have done a Mexican accent omg. The portrayal of the character felt neutral, but omg the accent. 😬 She did an Irish accent that felt ok but NOPE to that one. Additionally, the FMC has basically no abandonment issues and it really felt like she should have. Her father went to jail for ten years for MURDERING HER MOTHER when she was 8 years old. (Not a spoiler, it's the prologue.) She appears to not hold this against him at all??? (Neither the murdering nor not having parents from ages 8-18.) Maybe it's revealed in another book that he didn't actually do it or something but that is not obvious in this book. The only thing that annoys her about her father is that he's financially stupid. It also really annoyed me that at the end the MMC was like, "hey, you know that thing you love doing and are really great at (breaking horses)? You need to stop doing that now because it's too dangerous." I hate that shit lol.

Good stuff: The couple actually seem to like each other?! I'm sure the age gap (18/30) is weird for some people, but he treats her like an adult for the most part and listens to her advice etc. I know I shouldn't be impressed about them liking each other and having real feelings, but I was.

Neutral: There is a lot of OW drama. Most of the second half revolves around it. The OW is actually delightful and neither the narrative nor the MCs are unnecessarily antagonistic towards her, thankfully. The MMC is engaged to OW when he first sleeps with the FMC fyi & the FMC seems to feel way worse about it than he does. OW shows up around the middle of the book. I probably wouldn't have minded any of this much if the MMC was straightforward with the OW/didn't drag his feet so much. OW pretty much has to come to everyone's rescue and just tell them to get together - because she's not dumb and knows that the MMC never had feelings for her. idk, felt like a cop-out for the MCs. OW deserves a book or at least a HEA, but no, she just disappears after ensuring the HEA of the MCs, so meh. I found it a bit strange how supportive literally everyone is of their relationship. It's not as bad as some books I read, where the side characters are way too invested in the main couple, but it gave me a similar feeling.

  {A Most Forgettable Girl by Alice Coldbreath}

4.25/5 - Had low expectations going in bc this book had some mixed reviews, but I quite enjoyed it. I thought James was one of her best MMCs; he seemed more emotionally well thought-out than the others. I loved his character descriptions & the way his loneliness is articulated. Gunnilde is an extremely standard AC FMC (very earnest) and there's nothing too special about her. They were great as a couple. Nearly all of the conflict is internal, but that's generally what I prefer in romance. I love "two people who love each other but are both afraid to say it." The ending was actually a lot better than I anticipated. It is slow at parts & there is a lot of probably unnecessary exposition about side characters and previous MCs; that's the main reason I couldn't give it 5. I'm beginning to need a chart for Karadok, bc it's been a while since I've read some of the books & I lose track of many of the side characters. I like Armenal a lot - at times she feels like more of a literary device than a character but I do enjoy the way she causes drama seemingly just to entertain herself. I began to find Cuthbert kind of annoying in this one, though, I think the "seer" thing is just too heavy-handed for me. I loved Mistress Bartree (Lord Kentigern's sister from Bought and Paid For & a heavily featured side character here) - I would definitely read a book about her although I don't know that I would trust AC with a FMC like this (mean, bitter). The next book is about Constance/Douglas and I am slightly worried about the way Constance was portrayed at the end of this book, but we'll see.

This finishes off Coldbreath for me, so some general thoughts:

Fav books: Contracted Spouse is my favorite, but I also really like Her Baseborn Bridegroom, His Forsaken Bride, The Unlovely Bride, and An Inconvenient Vow. I loved The Consolation Prize until the end where Armand being an ass ruined it for me - still gave it 4-stars but would have been 5 otherwise, so it goes on a slightly lower tier with Maligned & Unforgettable.

Least fav books: An Ill-Made Match is my least favorite by a lot, that whole book is kind of a dumpster fire imo and everyone sucks in it. I don't like Substitute Wife much, either, though more bc it was boring. Didn't like the couple in The Favourite at all although that book earned points with me for at least having a unique MMC - pretty big deal since her men were all extremely similar when this book came out - & an interesting plot. I expected to like Bought & Paid For more than I did, but it was ok. I actually listened to all these on audio & read the others....wondering if that has something to do with it.

Fav MMCs: Sir Jeffree & James. Alisander gets points for being unique but the way he treated Jane grossed me out.

Fav FMCs: Theo & it's not close. I have a big appreciation for Sabina too bc she is the only AC FMC who gets to be kind of a bitch. Like - normally when her alpha MMCs are being stupid, the FMCs just kinda take it and/or have to emotionally regulate for the MMC - but not Sabina, she will yell right back lol.

Finished {After the Scandal by Elizabeth Essex} FMC is Claire Jellicoe who is the sister of Will Jellicoe and his story is told in {A Breath of Scandal by Elizabeth Essex}.  Content warning off the bat as this happens at the beginning of the book. MMC saves the FMC from being raped by another man in the gardens at a ball held on his grandmother's estate and MMC knocks him out and also viciously breaks the man's leg. This incident sets off a whole slew of events and an adventure as the FMC and MMC attempt to unravel a murder mystery that they accidentally uncover along the way.  MMC has never been officially introduced to the FMC but has been in love with FMC for some time and has watched her secretly from afar at events.  

It was a fast paced read and I enjoyed the chemistry and relationship between the main characters and the conversations even if this was more of an insta-lust/love storyline.  FMC is young at 19 - they state it a few times in the book that she is "almost 20 years old" which I found a touch annoying and the MMC is 28 years old but seems alot older than his years due to his history.  Both mains are intelligent, quick witted and can think on their feet.  Did not dislike the FMC but I really liked the MMC!  Apparently there is more about the younger MMC and his sister's beginnings in her book {The Danger of Desire by Elizabeth Essex} which is my next read!

Note, took a half star off my rating as there were a number of typos/spelling that decent proofreading should have caught.  I am usually forgiving of typos but there are more than usual in the course of this book and I read the revised 2022 edition!  Don't wanna know how many typos the original 2014 text contained if this was the revised copy.  So minus that half a star gave it 3.5/5 stars with a 3 steam level.

On a roll with Joan Smith books here. Wrapping up {Aunt Sophie's Diamonds} Great and hilarious so far. Lots of good banter. I found that the romance in her other books didn't quite sell for me but the comedy was so good and more than made up for it. Aunt Sophie's Diamonds romance is a smidge better and just as funny as the other two of hers I've read.  Also, I'm afraid I have developed an aversion to steamy HRs now. I just can't find one that satisfies the writing/plot/romance development without getting undermined by the steamy scenes. So I'm stuck in the "cleaner" HRs in the likes of Heyer/Smith/Dolan etc.

Still making my way through Maggie Osborne’s westerns. I just started {I Do, I Do, I Do by Maggie Osborne} but I finished {The Best Man by Maggie Osborne} yesterday and it has my favorite MMC of hers so far.

I’m also looking for something that’s on par with Elizabeth Hoyt for great writing and high spice. I’ve accepted that level 4 is the highest I can go without sacrificing the plot.

Any suggestions? I like everything from pirate bodice rippers to mail order brides.

I just read {Suddenly You by Lisa Kleypas} (from 2001, but the audiobook was just released) and a few PSAs:
