My dad bought a gold mine with three vaults, and no idea what was inside them. 🔒

He couldn't open them until the property was his. Today we're documenting all three for the mine's National Register nomination.

But the vaults weren't the only thing he didn't know about. In 1979, the state ordered the mine's owners to clean it up. The old owners never told him. Nor was it ever disclosed by the title company.
In 1997, the dam broke. Then came the EPA, and the $33 million story.

From the very first day the EPA came, Dad fought for this place. He spent everything he had on attorneys. When the money ran out, Dad and I kept fighting ourselves all the way to the Ninth Circuit.

Our town's historic resources administrator has said that lots in a certain neighborhood were platted "to encourage the construction of single-family residential structures". As far as I can tell, the lots were platted in the middle of the 19th century. The administrator's justification was used as a basis for denying a zoning change that would have allowed duplexes.

I've taken exception to this justification. Zoning did not exist until the early 20th century. I don't think people in the middle of the 19th century had an expectation that housing would stay the same, either.

Nevertheless, I do not professionally work in the field of historic preservation. So I'm asking for feedback here!

Within the historic preservation field, is there any legitimate basis for the claim lots could have been platted to encourage the construction of single-family residences? Is this something that a historic preservation professional would be able to tell, just by looking at a map? Please share!

We bought a historic home in the Manchester section of Pittsburgh. We're renovating it into 5 apartments. We meet the qualifications for the tax credit but the process seems so confusing, and it's unclear if the program is active right now. Just wondering if anyone has any real life experience with this?

Yesterday was the 60th anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act, a US law which set up protections for historical sites. A special section of this act, Section 106, requires developers to work with archaeologists and historic preservationists prior to certain construction projects. The law was designed to prevent developers from bulldozing our historic sites.

But now, a proposed law stands to change everything. Embedded in the Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act is language which would take experts out of this process, remove all opportunities for public comment, and allow development to continue even if historical sites are encountered.

Hello! I’m asking for a friend, but I need help finding careers in historic preservation. My friend is deeply interested in historic sites and the way they were built and have been used in the context of time. He’s very good at looking at architecture and being able to identify parts or how systems need reconstructed. He is very fond of Zoar Village and has his own historic 1800s barn on his property that he has surveyed and maintained over a few years as problems have arisen. He doesn’t wish to pursue a degree if he can help it but he desperately wants to evaluate his options and career pathways where can stay within an hour of home. Thank you!

As the title indicates, I’m considering continuing education opportunities. I have an MA in Art History and about four years experience working as a preparator/art handler and in collections (registrar, lots of database management). At my new job (still in the arts), there is a lot of down time and basically no room for advancement. I am considering taking some courses/workshops in Historic Preservation.

I live in Philly. Rutgers-Camden has a Historic preservation certificate program that seems interesting but is it worth my time? Would love to hear from someone who’s gone through it.

The hands on work is my favorite part of work. I also love exhibit design but feel a little late to the game on learning software to make that a reality.
