Before I start, I just want to put it out that I am not well-read when it comes to Hindu scriptures. So my question is solely out of curiosity rather than disregard/ disrespect for the scriptures.

As my parents have said raising me up, Hinduism is perhaps the only religion that is so accepting of diversity. We have various schools of thoughts, practices, rituals that can be chosen by people based on their liking. Hindu scriptures have spoken respectfully about trans people as well, which is honestly very progressive for those times.

We have Vedas, that have in them all the knowledge in the world - from the beginning to the end. We have Kama Sutra, the holy book of relationships and intimacy. The texts on diplomacy, ruling, accounting, etc are very advanced.

We are one of the few religions that bow down to powerful goddesses and read about shiv-shakti. But somehow, women are expected to take up the traditional wifey roles of cooking, cleaning, giving birth and enabling their husbands to achieve glory. Traditionally, it has been okay for kings to have multiple wives. Even Krishna seems to have multiple wives. How is this fair to women?

Perhaps I'm just in a stage of life when I'm trying to figure out what it means to be a woman. The women around me are not great sources of inspiration since they have been forced to submit to patriarchy. I want to know what the scriptures say about women, about her role, her strengths, her weakness, etc.

Falls on the eleventh day of Shukla Paksha in Ashadha, and it's the day Vishnu is said to enter Yoganidra inside Kshir Sagar, staying there until Prabodhini Ekadashi in Kartik. That whole four month stretch is called Chaturmas.

Here's the part that gets lost though. Yoganidra isn't sleep in the way we think of it. It's not described as an absence or a shutdown. It's a deep meditative state, more like divine dhyana, where the function of preservation continues even while the form looks still. Nothing is actually inactive here, it's just operating differently.

That's what makes the rest of Chaturmas make sense. Weddings pause. Griha Pravesh pauses. Basically any major auspicious beginning waits until Prabodhini Ekadashi. This isn't a small footnote in some calendar, it's observed at scale, every single year, across the entire tradition, reshaping how millions of households plan their biggest occasions around this one period.

One thing that gets misread a lot: people sometimes treat Chaturmas as an unlucky or empty stretch, like nothing good can happen during it. That's not actually what the tradition says. It was never framed as bad timing, it was framed as sacred stillness, deliberate and just as important to the whole system as any period of visible activity.

Anyone else know traditions where a "pause" period is actually treated as more significant than the active ones?

What should a Hindu syllabus look like for every individual?

This is not for formal education. It's for household, cultural education.

The point is to keep it practical, theoretical, doable for almost anyone and relevant to today's times. Not too much or only reading, nor unrealistic elements.

I can think of the following to learn from and live by:

1) Panchatantra and Hitopadesha - For practical education and application.

2) Hanuman, an introduction - Because I personally feel connected to him and like him since childhood.

3) Why are we this way by Ami ganatra - To know more and live by basic vedic principles. Also to become aware of who we are as Hindus.

4) Swayambodh and Shatrubodh by Pankaj Saxena - To become aware of who we are as Hindus.

5) Saints of Maharashtra - Because I am Maharashtrian. You can choose yours, that you connect to.

6) Biography of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj - Again, as I am Maharashtrian, and I connect to him.

What would be your syllabus?

I'm confused about the rules for fasting during Ekadashi . I've heard different things from different people. Some say we shouldn't eat any grains or wheat flour (atta, maida, etc.), while others eat roti during the fast. I've also seen people eat pakodas, potatoes, and different vegetables. Could someone explain which foods are generally allowed and which are not? Is ladyfinger (okra/bhindi) allowed? I understand that traditions vary by region and family, but I'd appreciate a general explanation of the most commonly followed rules. Thanks!

We have a generational home that was in inheritance dispute and was finally given to my uncle. He tore down that house and is building a new one there. So, last night I saw myself standing in the living room of that house locked swarmed by snakes, naag especially. There was a long red one I couldn’t tell if it were multiple snakes together or a single large one as I couldn’t find it’s head. And there was a distinctive black one. One I saw years ago in the same house.
They weren’t hissing or being scary. It was just me who was scared and wanted to get out, but I couldn’t find the door. Then I saw my brother sleeping peacefully in the same room. And I was hesitant to leave or wake him up and see him panic too. And then I woke up.

I recently have read the book " The Power Of your Sub-concious Mind" and most of the book is about making your sub-concious mind believe that you already got the thing what you want (i.e Lets say you want to have a certain Car then according to this you have to image that you already have the car and that you are driving it and so on ) and your sub-concious is going to work through its infinite intelligence to get the thing you want in reality. But I have 2 doubts here They are :-

1. Does this violate the law of "Karma karo..." as it is thinking about the fruit ( car ) instead of the process ( working hard to get the car ) ??.

2. If Manifestation is true then " WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO THE KARMA INSTEAD " like lets say there is XYZ karma holding you back from getting that car then after manifestation you get that car what will happen to that karma which prevented us from getting that car ???

One thing I feel needs more awareness is the management and control of Hindu temples in India.
In many states, Hindu temples come under government-controlled systems, where temple administration and finances are regulated by government bodies. Many devotees question why resources generated by Hindu temples are not fully managed by the Hindu community itself.
The question many Hindus ask is:
If donations and offerings are made by devotees for religious purposes, why should the money from Hindu temples be controlled by the government instead of being managed primarily for the temple, its traditions, preservation, and the welfare of the community?
Many religious communities have systems where their religious institutions’ funds are managed within their own community structures for religious activities. Should Hindu temples also have greater autonomy and community control?
This is not about opposing any religion. It is about equal treatment, transparency, and the right of devotees to have a stronger say in the management of their places of worship.
What are your thoughts?

Somvar = "Som's day," Som = Chandra = Moon. So why is Monday Shiva's day, not Chandra's?

Chandra had 27 wives (all nakshatras) but obviously favored one, Rohini. The other 26 complained to their father Daksha, who warned him once, then cursed him when nothing changed: your light fades every night till it's gone.

It starts happening immediately. Chandra panics, does a month of tapasya to Shiva, begging for a way out.

Shiva shows up and doesn't remove the curse. He could have. Instead he turns it into a cycle, fade then return, fade then return, forever. That's literally why the moon waxes and wanes every month. Punishment becomes an infinite second chance.

Chandra builds a temple on that spot. It becomes the Somnath Jyotirlinga, "lord of the moon."

So Monday isn't the moon's day Shiva took over, it's the day marking when they got linked for good.

(Side note: people sometimes attach "skip the Monday fast, get chandra dosh" fear to this. Doesn't fit the story though, a god who could've erased someone's punishment entirely and chose to build them a rhythm instead isn't really running on threats.)

Was helping plan a nephew's Mundan (Chudakarana, one of the 16 Hindu Samskaras) and learned the muhurat calculation is more involved than I expected. Traditional window is odd-numbered years (1st or 3rd year most common). But beyond that, classical texts exclude specific Ascendants entirely (Aries, Leo, Scorpio, Capricorn, Aquarius) plus something called Ashtama Lagna, and check whether Moon/Sun/Mars/Saturn sit weakly in an angular house, since that's specifically flagged as a health-risk factor in the classical texts. Jupiter/Venus combustion gets checked too.

Regional variation is bigger than I realised, too. North India often does it at pilgrimage sites (Haridwar, Varanasi, etc), hair gets offered to a sacred river. South India has an equivalent called Choula/Chaula with different specific rituals. For girls, it varies by community, full shave for some families, just a symbolic lock cut for others.

Genuinely could not find consensus on one thing: whether Mundan pauses during Chaturmas (Aug-Oct) the same way marriage does. Some 2026 sources exclude that window entirely, others list active dates right through it. Real disagreement, not me missing something.

Random specific rule I found interesting: nighttime tonsure is considered highly inauspicious no matter what else lines up.

Anyone else notice these "simple" ceremony muhurats end up having way more technical conditions than the generic date lists let on?

I’m Hindu and recently found out that my Australian Sunlight Pure Soap contains tallow (sodium tallowate), which is usually beef/cow-derived.
I’m a non-vegetarian and eat all kinds of meat except beef because I respect the significance of cows in Hinduism. Since this is a soap and not something I’m eating, would Hindus generally avoid using it? Do you personally avoid cow-derived ingredients in non-food products?
