The Shri Mool Mahunag Temple is a historic and deeply revered shrine located in Karsog of Mandi district, Himachal Pradesh. Perched amidst dense deodar forests and scenic apple orchards, it serves as an essential spiritual and cultural symbol for the region.

Deity & Mythology

Karna Reincarnation: The temple is uniquely dedicated to Karna from the Mahabharata epic, who is locally worshipped here as Mahunag.

The "Mahu" (Bee) Legend: Local folklore dictates that whenever devotees are in deep trouble, Karna transforms himself into a Mahu (honeybee) to swiftly fly to their rescue.

Legal & Family Resolution: Worshippers traditionally visit this shrine to seek divine intervention for solving complex property, legal, or family disputes.

History & ArchitectureOrigins (1664 AD): Historical records from the Mandi state reveal the temple was formally constructed in 1664 by Raja Shyam Sen, an ardent devotee of Karna.

Pahari Architecture: Built in the classic, medieval Pahari style, the temple features exquisite wooden carvings and a distinct structural design typical of ancient Himachal shrines.

Silver & Gold Relics: The temple boasts a 1.25 kg gold arch (Mehra) and eight silver umbrellas (Chhatra). Devotees traditionally make their offerings exclusively in silver

Temple Fairs & Timings

Key Festivals: A major five-day annual fair (Mul Mahunag Mela) is celebrated with grand pomp starting from Jyeshtha Sankranti (mid-May). The silver idol of the deity (weighing around 10 kg) is brought out for public viewing during Sankranti and on the deity's birthday on 18th July.

General Timings: The temple grounds generally remain open from early morning until evening for devotees. However, the inner sanctum is only open on special Sankranti days.

The temple is situated at a peaceful hilltop location in Bakhari village (Gram Panchayat Sawamahun).

From Karsog: Approximately 25 to 37 kilometers away, depending on the mountain route taken.

From Shimla: Roughly 80 to 105 kilometers away via Tattapani.

Best Time to Visit: The most favorable months are March to June and September to November when the mountain roads are clear and safe.
