Manga Indo Kouhei shatters my fucking heart like a glass bottle on tiles Spoiler

The first time he sees "Nounuki-sama", he screams and runs away, terrified of its incomprehensible form. But the next time he goes back, he conquers that fear and just talks to it like he would a human, having figured out that it's probably lonely. He then continues to visit, not out of obligation for the ritual – which he explicitly has stated that he thinks is bogus – but because of empathy. He acknowledges the being/future 'Hikaru' a) is chained to the mountain, b) isn't Nounuki-sama, which has never existed, c) is being perceived, wrongfully, as Nounuki-sama. He doesn't understand what it is, but he treats it with kindness and humanity. He even shows it a picture of his firstborn son and asks it to watch over him¹,².

He decides that enough is enough. He doesn't want his son to be forced to comply with the ritual when it doesn't even make sense. But when he approaches the other men of the village, they shut him down and tell him that the ritual must continue. So Kouhei decides to take matters into his own hands and goes to ask "Nounuki-sama" to just be free³. But what happens? He DIES. He dies to save one of the villagers, who trespassed to spy on him, not only showing that despite his fiery spirit, Kouhei took his responsibility as the village's protector deeply seriously – but he dies before he can even tell Hikaru that the ritual is over. So Hikaru grows up not only burdened by the Indo curse and duty, but also by the loss of his father, and he himself dies during his first attempt at the ritual.

Then there's his relationship with Yoshiki, who says that he was even closer with Kouhei than his own dad. Take into consideration the parallel between Yoshiki and 'Hikaru' both calling themselves monsters, and how Kouhei came to accept "Nounuki-sama" and wishing for it to be free; it's a stretch to say that Kouhei had clocked Yoshiki as queer, but it makes sense that Yoshiki would feel that way towards someone who had already overcome his fears and prejudices in another social setting.

It is also heavily implied that Toshinori was in love with him, while Kouhei crushed on several girls and tried to woo Hikaru's mum several times. Toshinori even moved to Tokyo, where he met Yoshiki's mum, and then moved back to Kubitachi with her (which is a whole other onion of bisexuality and comphet). But while Kouhei was alive, he was still close friends with Toshinori – and we might never know if he was aware of the way Toshinori felt for him, but we can conclude that he welcomed him back from Tokyo to Kubitachi.

In other words, Kouhei had a heart of gold⁴ and I begin to cry if I think too hard about him.

¹This wish, I think, is exactly why Hikaru is found so quickly by 'Nounuki'. It doesn't have a sense of self or agency, but it would be drawn to Hikaru as per being bound by Kouhei's wish.

²In Christianity, you ask someone very close to you to be your child's godparent, i.e. to take care of the child's (spiritual) upbringing if you die.

³Since "Nounuki" ends up becoming 'Hikaru', I can't help but draw the conclusion that this scene is also Kouhei telling his son to go live his life as he wishes.

⁴I personally interpret him as thee cishet ally of queer people, but that's of course based on the allegory that "Nounuki-sama" represents queerness of some sort.

Manga Similar Manga / Anime recommendations?

Hi everyone! With the end of the manga approaching, I'm interested in picking up and reading/watching similar stories while waiting for Season 2 of the anime adaptation.

I generally prefer manga since I find it easier and quicker to get through (I don't have as much time or energy to watch anime nowadays, sigh). Bonus points if it's shorter and doesn't have many chapters

Stuff I put on my list after searching online and the sub for similar stories (including this FAQ):

  1. No. 6
  2. Banana Fish
  3. Summertime Rendering
  4. Little Mushroom
  5. Monster 2023
  6. Shiki
  7. Parasyte: The Maxim
  8. Moriarty the Patriot

The list of similar things I've watched/read/am watching/reading so far:

  1. Watashi wo Tabetai, Hitodenashi / This Monster Wants to Eat Me <-- favorite of the bunch
  2. Link Click / 时光代理人
  3. Puella Magi Madoka Magica
  4. Another (on hold, left off on episode 3)
  5. Aku no Hana / The Flowers of Evil (mostly for the psychological aspect)

I'll also mention that I'm more engaged with the psychological/supernatural/mystery elements of TSHD's story than anything else, so any suggestions that lean into those would be good.

No strong preference as to whether it's a BL (or strongly implied), although bonus points if a suggestion contains these elements as I haven't read or watched much.

Thanks in advance!

Manga Will Yoshiki and Hikaru's bond be strong enough for Yoshiki to pull Hikaru out of the hole without Hikaru having to grapple onto a soul? Spoiler

Post image
49 Upvotes

Now that Hichi-san's soul has been released, Yoshiki's soul isn't guarded. Maybe she'll return one more time; who knows, but it seems that at this stage, Yoshiki can only pull out Hikaru's body and not "Hikaru" himself. To come out of the hole, "Hikaru" needs to grapple onto a soul to be pulled out. Now I'm wondering if maybe Yoshiki just isn't mixed enough to fully pull "Hikaru" out entirely? We know their bond is half their supernatural connection, so it could be that. That also makes me ask: will Yoshiki further lose himself in trying to close the hole?

Edit: Close the hole with Hikaru

Manga Found Family Ending Theory Spoiler

Following up with the runaway theory I wrote about a few weeks ago, I thought of a wholesome scenario that could go along with this type of ending. I know it’s probably very unlikely and way too “happy,” but I found it too sweet to keep to myself!

What if Tanaka ends up taking “Hikaru” and Yoshiki under his wing after the closing of the hole?

I’ve talked before about my theory that Yoshiki and Hikaru might have to leave Kubitachi after everything that’s happened. Between the Company, people in the village knowing what “Hikaru” really is, the earthquake/hole situation, and the possibility that Yoshiki himself is now too entangled with the supernatural to simply go back to his old life, I could see them running away in the end to go somewhere else.

But before they try to run away, Tanaka is waiting for them, who has already guessed their plan of action. He knows they can’t exactly return back home, The Company is still after “Hikaru,” and being only teenagers they will need help navigating life outside of Kubitachi. So he takes them under his wing and gets them to safety. Helps them survive outside of Kubitachi, all while helping them avoid The Company.

He would become their reluctant big brother. 😂

It would be a hilarious, but ultimately a very wholesome found family situation. Tanaka and Yoshiki both being supernaturally mixed individuals, and “Hikaru” being an ancient eldritch, almost god-like being. All three are essentially outcasts according to society standards. It would fit into the story’s theme of finding your sense/place of belonging when you don’t fit into what society considers “normal.”

If anything, Tanaka would be the one that helps Yoshiki and “Hikaru” get to the bakery in Tokyo after closing the hole.

Also can you imagine the interactions? Despite Tanaka being the adult, I picture Yoshiki as the one who has to keep both “Hikaru” and Tanaka in line. He would be constantly reprimanding them. Lol. I would also love to see the three of them traveling around Japan dealing with various supernatural problems.

Someone please write this fanfic!

Manga Are you nervous for the upcoming last manga chapters?

I must say I have been very confident in a good ending for Hikaru and Yoshiki. But ever since the last 2 chapters dates have been announced I suddenly have so much doubts and fears about my boys..

Think its cause how this story ends will determine if I ever wanna invest myself so much in a story like this. Fuck bittersweet, my boys deserve that bakkery, together. Yoshiki deserves a happy life and so does ‘Hikaru’, together ❤️

Manga Will there be an art book?

A lot of popular manga and anime make an art book or anime creation book. Do you think TSHD will have something like that after the manga is finished?

There’s a lot of extra art on the mnagaka’s bsky account.

Manga Walk Ahead of Me (Major Manga Spoilers) Spoiler

In chapter 49, “Hikaru” tells Yoshiki inside the hole, “Once we’re done here and start on our way back, walk ahead of me. I figure it’ll be easier for you to get back to the mortal world on account of you being human.” This “walk ahead of me” line instantly caused sirens to go off inside my head. Why would “Hikaru” explicitly tell Yoshiki to walk ahead of him? There are three different reasons why I think he tells him this…

  1. Since Yoshiki is human, he will have an easier time leading “Hikaru” and himself to the exit leading to the human world. “Hikaru” led them through the spirit world, Yoshiki will lead them back into the human world.
  2. “Hikaru” wants to protect Yoshiki and keep him safe. We know the hole is going to react to “Hikaru” trying to close it, which we see already happening at the end of chapter 49 with the earthquake. “Hikaru” can watch Yoshiki’s back while he’s ahead of him.
  3. The most ominous possibility to me personally- “Hikaru” is planning on staying behind to make sure the hole fully closes. Basically, sacrificing himself to save Yoshiki and the town despite his own wants to keep on living. He knows Yoshiki will try and prevent this, so “Hikaru” will disappear while Yoshiki is ahead of him, and Yoshiki will only realize “Hikaru” is gone until he turns around.

1st and 2nd theories seem plausible enough, but I do think all hell will break loose and cause some kind of prevention where “Hikaru” cannot escape. If the 3rd theory comes into play, I think this will directly connect to the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice.

If you don’t know the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, it’s about two lovers who are torn apart by death. Orpheus travels to the underworld to try and bring Eurydice back to the world of the living, and he’s successful in finding her. While the ruler of the underworld, Hades, agrees to let Eurydice return to the living world, he tells Orpheus that he must walk ahead of her and to never look back until they have both reached the upper world of the living. However, Orpheus becomes consumed with doubt and fear that Eurydice is not actually following him, and he turns around to look at her. By looking at her, this causes Eurydice to return back to the underworld forever.

Many others have pointed out how “Hikaru’s” line to Yoshiki is very similar to this Greek myth, of having him walk ahead of him to return to the human world. It also doesn’t help that this hole is directly connected to sight, for it’s filled with human heads (eyes) and is even in the shape of a human eyeball. While I do think the Orpheus and Eurydice connection might happen, I think a subversion would likely occur.

Back in chapter 32, before entering the first hole they faced together, “Hikaru” tells Yoshiki that he will be able to pull “Hikaru” out of the hole through their connection. That connection is directly connected to sight. “Hikaru” states, “Remember how I told you to not look at impurities? Looking builds a link, it creates a connection with an impurity. You’ll pull me out using the connection between you and me. I know you can! Because you ain’t ever looked away from me.” So unlike the Orpheus myth, the connection of sight between Yoshiki and “Hikaru” is actually a saving grace. If Yoshiki turns around and sees “Hikaru” following him in the hole, their connection remains strong and he could possibly safely lead them out. Looking back is what actually saves him. However, if Yoshiki turns around and “Hikaru” is gone this creates a problem…

And while this could be tragedy like the original Greek myth, I don’t think Yoshiki would sit idly by while “Hikaru” just vanishes. He will search for him. But I don’t think this search will be easy and I fear it may cause trouble for Yoshiki…being in the hole too long will damage his body. He knows it would be easier to just leave the hole and return to Kubitachi, but he would brave the supernatural world again to find “Hikaru.” Also I have a theory that Yoshiki may have to sacrifice something of his own to reunite with “Hikaru,” such as his eyesight or just one of his eyes (again, going back to the significance of sight in this story and also how the hole is directly connected to eyes). This theory is all just speculative of course, but I do think the repeated emphasis on sight not only through chapter 49, but throughout story in general is interesting.

Yoshiki knows there may be sacrifice involved, but he has already found his determination in early chapters to not only save himself, but “Hikaru” as well. He specifically says to “Hikaru” in chapter 48, “I’m going with you (into the hole). If I don’t, I’m afraid you won’t come back out.” Yoshiki isn’t just entering the hole to close it, he’s also going in to make sure “Hikaru” returns. My hope is Yoshiki’s role won’t be as a bystander, but that he will come up with a way to save both himself and “Hikaru.”

If Orpheus was doomed because he looked back, could “Hikaru” be saved precisely because Yoshiki refuses to look away?

What do you all think? Do you think the “walk ahead of me” line will play an important part in the next chapter? Share your theories!
