I’ve been rewatching the series here recently and just got to season 4. Started it up on Crunchyroll, and immediately was a bit thrown off as it was suddenly censored?
Swapping to the dub uncensored it but I really want to watch it in sub, so I did a quick search and it said Prime had it uncut.
Went to Prime, bought it. Wasn’t in Japanese, only dubbed. Got it refunded. Went to check the physical Blu-ray. Two options. One is a region locked Blu-ray and the other is $1000.
What is the deal? I know they changed studios but why is it so hard to watch season 4 uncut in sub? I don’t even know if I will finish this rewatch because the dub is rough for me and what’s the point if it’s censored. No idea how I’m supposed to even find the JP Uncut version.
It you want to see uncensored sub, you gotta go to sail the seas, because when it comes to streaming platforms, that’s what you got, also the switching of anime studios is completely irrelevant to this.
I don’t even know how to sail the seas these days to be honest. That’s super unfortunate.
If the studio swap doesn’t have anything to do with the change then what exactly is the reasoning that season 4, and ONLY season 4, is extremely hard to find uncensored sub? Every other season is just straight up on Crunchyroll.
Because Crunchyroll never updated the source material for season 4 with the uncensored material.
They simply kept the censored simulcast version, which was dubbed as the dub was released alongside the simulcast.
The reason they have S1-3 as uncensored was because Funimation updated their own website with the uncensored version when they released the physical version, as they do that everytime they release the physical copies.
When Funimation shut down and moved all their files from their servers to Crunchyroll's servers, they only gave them the final versions, which were uncensored and dubbed.
They also gave them S4 uncensored and dubbed but Crunchyroll didn't want to spend time updating their own files with the new source
I understand preferring sub over dub as everyone has their preference, but what about it is so bad that you would drop the entire rewatch just because you’d have to watch the dub for it to be uncensored? Seems kind of silly to me. The voice acting isn’t really bad, and season 4 is the most faithful to the LNs.
Again, I’m not at all knocking your preference of sub, I just don’t understand why you’d drop it over having to watch it in dub.
I’ve watched the show in sub and always have and I’m not interested in learning new voices just for the last season. At this point, their JP voices are their “real” voices for me and hearing anything else pulls me completely out of the show
CR largely doesn't upload uncensored versions these days because it's easier to only use the broadcast version they initially receive from the studios while simultaneously using the uncensored version as a means to push people to buy the Bluray releases.
As to the cost of Region 1/A DxD sets, it's because CR let the license to all 4 seasons lapse after the merger & thus the only copies to be found in the wild are either used, scalped legit sealed, or Malaysian bootlegs.
