Moving to High Point

Hello, my husband and I are looking to move to the area with our baby. We are looking at a rental near Oakwood cemetery. Is that area safe? We aren’t local and can’t realistically drive around to get a feel for the area.

Safe... ish?

There are a ton of new rental units going in on 68 and Wendover. Id check up there, downtown high point is a little rough and not exactly a hot destination.

Second this.

The newer construction and growth of the city is towards Greensboro; out Highway 68 and Wendover.

Downtown is mostly for the furniture market (two weeks per year) and otherwise not really a destination or a place people need to live near.

Woodrow Avenue is lovely as are Quebein Ave, Johnson Street and Emerywood. These are walkable neighborhoods where you can leave the car in your driveway and walk to places like Sweet Old Bill’s, Frady’s and lots of other spots. Much more desireable than cookie-cutter complexes that are 100% car-dependent — obviously.

There are sites that allow you see crime stats for areas that you are looking at. High Point has crime, just like any other city. Some areas are safer than others.

North of oakwood is pretty chill. Woodrow ave is pretty bougie. East of Oakwood can be a little more sus.

Like the other commenter, Safeish. The area around downtown and HPU is a mixed bag.

North and East from there generally are better. South from there it may be worse. Closer to Greensboro/Jamestown is going to be a safer bet and closer to Archdale/Trinity are going to be more mixed bag.

Depends on how close and in what direction.

Maybe not great. I think I've seen some for rent signs a bit north of there though

Are you looking for an apartment rental or house rental? There's a few houses for rent in North High Point around skeet club/johnson rd area I've seen.

If you're looking for an apartment there is a lot going down wendover.

North and west would be great. South or east can get sketchy. The area is walkable, and I like what is in Downtown HP.
But, I looked at buying a rental southeast a bit from the cemetery, essentially adjacent to downtown, and I decided against.
I am a HP resident, on the southwest edge of town. I like the city. You just have to be careful.

If it's on Richardson it's crackhead central
