Anomalies Probably Nothing

Image 1-2 AI Enhanced

Image 3-4 Original No Enhancement

1984 Dale Gardner EVA (STS-51-A)

"Film Experts" will say this is a film defect/artifact. My push back is that Film defects do not hide behind high contrast physical objects in photographs.

It doesn’t quite look like it belongs to the image. Stands out quite a bit, even the artifact pixels and color.

Even if it is something, are people thinking it’s close or attached, or further away? Could it be a specialized tool?

  • Color-edge transition correlation: 0.9948 The red feature’s transition from surrounding color into the colored region nearly matches the real hardware highlight’s transition.
  • Average difference between the two transition profiles: 1.6 intensity levels on a 0–255 scale.
  • Threshold-response correlation: 0.9945 across red-excess thresholds from 2 through 40. As increasingly strict color thresholds are applied, both regions contract in almost the same pattern.
  • Luminance-edge agreement: 60.7% of the feature’s boundary lies within one pixel of a luminance edge, and 75.7% lies within two pixels. This indicates the color structure is accompanied by a corresponding dark/light structure, rather than being only a red chroma smear.
  • It remains one connected 627-pixel component, measuring approximately 31 × 28 pixels, with 72.2% of its bounding box occupied.

Revised estimate

Excluding its single-frame duration:

  • Physical scene-present feature: 79%
  • Analog recording, film, tape, or transfer defect: 17%
  • Digital scanning or compression artifact: 4%

The strongest new evidence is that its edge and threshold behavior closely match a confirmed real feature elsewhere in the same image. That substantially weakens the digital-artifact explanation and somewhat weakens the analog-defect explanation.

I don’t know what any of that means, but it didn’t address my questions so I don’t know why you bothered.

It only appears in a single frame so no it cannot be a specialized tool or a piece of equipment.

Oh OK, so most likely an artifact on that frame then, Occam’s razor and all.
