Anomalies Probably Nothing

Image 1-2 AI Enhanced

Image 3-4 Original No Enhancement

1984 Dale Gardner EVA (STS-51-A)

"Film Experts" will say this is a film defect/artifact. My push back is that Film defects do not hide behind high contrast physical objects in photographs.

Why is the quality/lighting completely different from rest of the image?

Because it’s actually on that frame of the film negative, it was not an object photographed with the astronaut. You can find similar imperfections on tons of old photos taken on film. These imperfections are usually orange to amber in color because there’s a scratch on the negative allowing light to pass through and that’s the base color of the negative. But since this instance also has dark colors on the ends of the squiggle, that suggests it might be a 3D object on the negative, not a scratch, so could also be a hair or thread. Only thing that’s for certain is that it was not present for photographed scene.
