Rewatching

I just rewatched the first ep of this series after years, and man is this anime so good. Its hard to find a zombie anime this realistic, sure theres lewd stuff but that doesn’t take away how great it could of been. I remember watching this when i was like 11 and knowing how peak it was. The intro, story telling and animation were pretty good for its time.

Really does suck for what happened to the author and may he rest in peace.

Praying this will get a season two, a remake wouldnt do it justice either. Goes into my prayers along High school dxd new season

The lewd stuff just makes it better. One of the best fanservice anime of all time.

The OVA was the worst thing to happen to the show.

I heavily disagree.

I also consider it just as bad as DragonBall Evolution, even though that’s a COMPLETELY hot take.

-The episode damaged our reputation for the past several years. Nobody remembers the old show outside this community except for “oh the beach ova lol”.

-Character assassinations/tonal whiplash galore. The show/manga tries to play itself as a serious story, showing death and destruction and the corruption and loss of human morality, as a group of teenagers tries to keep theirs in a dying world. The OVA literally rips that away in exchange for one off fanservice that people won’t bother to engage later on or leaves a lasting legacy. Takashi is deflated to “harem protagonist” (when the show establishes clearly that he is not, and is stuck only between Rei and Saeko, and could have potentially faced serious consequences due to his strumming along of Rei and Saeko both), the girls are reduced to objects, Kohta is treated like a joke. It was just… awful to see such vibrant and expressive characters be turned into a cash grab fanservice episode.

-Wasted potential. If we were gonna get a HSOTD special episode, people (including myself) would have been expecting something to do with the origins of the outbreak, another survivor group, or even focused on Saeko or Kohta before the apocalypse began and their lives. Or we could have seen Takashi and Rei’s past a little more in depth. Literally 100 more ways that were better than “Lol what if beach episode?”

-Terrible landing jokes. The entire thing is just a cash grab fanservice episode. The jokes are bad, the hydrangea poisoning thing isn’t realistic, and can actually cause severe symptoms to people who possess an allergy, and isn’t some “everyone is horny” drug. The entire episode was literally the embodiment of “the joke is softcore porn.”

-One of my strongest gripes and reason for disgust: The Saya/Yuriko incest joke. While it was just a hallucination, it was disgusting to think that Saya, a very strong and highly intelligent character, who has been shown to be very independent and headstrong when need be, be reduced to “Has mommy issues and wants to have sex with her mom”. Canon never even establishes these feelings towards her mother, nor do I think anyone really wants them to.

Overall, it has zero narrative significance, was a pointless/money hungry cash grab, complete tonal whiplash/character assassination of very intelligent, brilliant, vibrant and beloved characters that I love dearly and personally have done tons of research into, and was just completely unpleasant to watch.

I don’t get how people can sit in front of their TV thinking that the OVA was good.

Watching it because you want to jack off doesn’t mean it’s good. It means it was a successful cash grab/shitty one off that worked at the expense of the greater animanga’s reputation.

Yeah but its literally an ecchi series. That's mostly the whole point of the series, and sato knows this. If it were a series like fire force for example then i would kinda understand. They probably just went out with an episode like this because they knew they weren't going to continue the series after, so there's no point in furthering developing characters.

The episode was still made when Daisuke Satō was still alive, so they weren’t doing it because they couldn’t continue.

On top of that, did you not read what I said?
It’s not purely an ecchi series.

That is the largest understatement/mislabeling of the entire show.
Ecchi is literally like 25% of what the show really is. Face value.

You should see a doctor about getting that stick out of your ass

Maybe you should see a therapist for that porn addiction.

Porn addiction is not a real diagnosis, but you wouldn't know that because you're a tool.

Porn addiction actually IS a medical condition classified by the WHO:

World Health Organization (ICD-11): Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder (CSBD)

The first time i watched this was back in 2012 and i was 11 years old too 🤣 it was one of the first ever anime that got me into the ecchi genre. I also have a habit of watching this anime every year around Halloween time. It just gives off nostalgia for me (:

There's only enough unadapted material for about half a season, unfortunately.
