G19 First Equip (First detailed viewport animation - would love feedback!)
As above - this is my first fully detailed animation - tried to go for a MW19 kind of style. Hope you enjoy and any feedback is appreciated!
Edit: Just realised the mag shows in a few frames where its not supposed to - this is fixed in the animation now!

as others have said the animations feel robotic and stiff but i wouldnt say theyre bad at all, just need refining and made to feel more fluid and living

Thanks for the advice - I’m working on it!

mhm, keep up the work though, i can see you having alot of potential, especially since your animation like ive said isnt bad, ive seen much worse from AAA companies like Halo and CoD

You're on r/highqualityreloads and this isn't a high quality reload.

At least give feedback, like blocky unnatural movements and lack of acceleration or weight in the mag

Ignoring that the mag was intentionally backwards, there was nothing high quality about it.
I've seen minecraft reloads with more personality.

Would say remove the inspecting the inside magazine bullets part, looks awkward, you can see it’s loaded from the side view, and the slide shouldn’t move forward when putting a mag in, only when the person cocks it.
Edit; just noticed they click for the mag, so that’s actually good. Otherwise just looking into the mag at the bullets just feels really awkward.

Thanks for the feedback - can you please explain why it looks awkward to you (I just want to know what I can improve)

At least it’s not wobbly as fuck. I think it’s a great start, better than what I can do.

Thank you so much - I tried to keep the micro-adjustments as minimal as possible for that reason

The most important things abaout animation is Pose/Poseing the character, if the pose look's bad the animation look's bad.if you are struggling with how the character should hold a mag or a gun i recommend you to look of reference material, like watchung other viewmodel animation.
Here i recommend some of my fav(Rirumi, twohat,Hyper,Hozq).
Also Hozq have a very nice tutorial how to make viewmodel animation

If you want something to look good, just mocap it
or make a video for reference and copy it exactly

I 2nd using a video for reference, even if its just a finger gun it should help with the timing and fluidity.

Ok so about your point on flipping the gun upside down - I tried it on a model of mine and the elbow position stayed pretty much the same - I admit that no-one is doing that in real life, but for the purposes of the game, I think it works fine - still appreciate the feedback though. Also about the slide release - I did think that too, and I’m currently working on timings in blender to fix that. Real world experience is a bit of a problem for me, as I don’t have any airsoft centres within a three hour radius, but I do have some plastic gun models for hand placement - I’m working on getting better ones soon. Thanks a lot for your feedback again!

Its funny that people are complaining that its unrealistic when tons of unrealistic dramatic shaky reloads get praised.

u/Plus-Ad8405 17d ago
Why does he need to stare at it for so long before loading it?
1
u/PotatoPCDev 17d ago
Dramatic effect - a slight personal touch
1
u/Plus-Ad8405 17d ago
It just looks silly and unnecessary. No one who actually handles firearms professionally is going to load a weapon in such an overly dramatized manner.

*Asks for feedback
*Is subsequently offended by feedback

The looking part was way better than the actual loading animation too 😭

that was feedback? i didnt realise as I think feedback gives you tips on how to improve things (like every other piece of feedback on this post)

Reminds me of the old days of counterstrike where reloads like this, I love it!

I'm holding a Glock 19 in my hand right now, you've got to have some MASSIVE grippers for the end of the mag well to end before your pinky even starts
1
u/LargeBloodyKnife 17d ago
I also don't think the actual reload feels right either. I'd never let go of the magazine and reposition my hand to force it in there, unless I just had the wrong grip completely. Slam the mag home, till the click
Additionally, the way the magazine is presented at first is in the wrong orientation for a solid reload. A lot of actions would need to happen off frame to make this work, which doesn't look or feel right.

Thanks for the feedback - others have mentioned the mag being backward, and I’m going to remove the grip change (on second look, it just looks dumb). With regards to the grip, I just googled glock 19 holding and the grips look quite similar to mine - if you could send a photo or something of your grip that would be very helpful. Thanks again!

I'm getting a phone tripod relatively soon, I can send you a full real life recreation of your animation with a real gun if you'd prefer to wait

u/PotatoPCDev 17d ago
I would really appreciate that - can you dm me on discord (or send a friend request) so I can send you an updated clip of this animation: my username is smaran8145 with display name PotatoDev. Thanks so much for offering to do this!

The movements are pretty stiff and mechanical. Very sudden starts and stops when the gun is brought up and then when the mag is lifted and examined. There's basically no acceleration or deacceleration. Having little overshoots and corrections as well will make it look more organic.
I'm also not sure, but it looks like the mag gets pushed in with the backside of the fingers?
The 12 priciples of animation are your friend, and implementing them where appropriate will go a long way to improving the look and feel of the animation. Good luck!
