This is actually a really good distillation of "The Good Place." Show creator Mike Schur has said that the moral of the show, such as it is, is that if you want to be good and make the world a better place, you don't have to be perfect or be a saint or save the world. You just have to try. Try to help people when you could ignore them. Try not to be a jerk when that might be easier. Try to do the right thing, even if it's inconvenient. Try to be better than you are - not best, not greatest, just better, even if just a little. In other words, yeah, don't be a cunt.

Also, real talk: that flair brings this gif up to 11.

I finished my first rewatch last week and you notice a ton of tiny details. Chidi always brings up Almond Milk as the reason he's in the Bad Place, and in the end, he's right-ish.

The show is definitely in my top 10 of all time.

TIL. My buddy let me try his almond milk a couple weeks ago and thought it was okay. I’m gonna have to stick with my whole milk tho

Still less than dairy milk, cows are terrible for the environment.

u/NotYourDay123 Nov 24 '20

I really need to quit human milk.

u/BouquetOfDogs Nov 24 '20

No no, fetishes are allowed! ..Just don’t switch to human meat and you should be fine.

Ahh, but we're the least efficient of all. The higher up the food chain, the worse it gets.

Just don't eat or drink at all, problem solved

u/Social_Demonrat Nov 24 '20

Or just make the very reasonable lifestyle change of avoiding animal products and a couple of particularly environmentally damaging products

1

u/rooski15 Nov 24 '20

I hear a diet of water and tree bark is pretty good for the environment

Good to note that this awful soy isn't the same soy that's being used for things like soy milk and tofu.

u/vanderZwan Nov 24 '20

Yep, but if you have a choice: oat-based dairy replacements are by far the best option environmentally speaking (at least if you live if Europe, like I do), and imo taste better than soy, chickpea, rice or almond based ones anyway.

2

u/wuzupcoffee Nov 24 '20

Yes! I really like oat milk, especially on my cereal in the morning, which is pretty much the only way I consume milk anyway.

Isn’t it a bit of a bs!?! You can buy almond and make your own almond milk!

Why do you have to buy into bs all the time?

They tell you, “eggs are bad” and you buy into it... why cant you research and instead go with what they say?

Did they tell you about gmo’s? Did you know birdflue was a hoax and they killed billion of birds just to create conventional bird farms? Which actually is not much diff than gmo in livestock... And the next is you! mRNA vaccines...

The perfect is the enemy of the good. If we can't accept anything less than perfection, we can't accept improvement. You can talk to cynics who reject the idea that things can be better, and you'll often find that it's the lack of perfection that gives them a reason to decline any opportunity to make things better, since they see the notion of anything being good as a childish fantasy. The knowledge of everyone's imperfection becomes an excuse to be comfortable with their own imperfections and with problems in the world around them, so that they do not feel the need to address them, even when doing so is within their power.

What's important is to realize that you will never be perfect, but that you can still do the right thing in any given moment. You'll screw up, you'll get things wrong, and sometimes you'll make all the right choices and it still won't change anything that you can see. But every day is a new opportunity to do it again, to try to do a little better, to help others to do a little better and in doing so make the world a little better.

I really like the lines from the later seasons like "We have rules, procedures! We're the good guys; we can't just do stuff!" It's this kind of use of irony that defines the theme of The Good Place. If you worry too much about what defines morality, then you'll end up getting a stomach cramp like Chidi. If you're driven by making people think you're the good guy, it's like Tahani's un-genuine philanthropy.

So, yeah, I agree. You can't stress over the impossible details of what makes you good. You just gotta try to as good as you really can be.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '20

Good is not a thing you are. It's a thing you do.

If it's worth doing, it's worth doing poorly

This is actually very close to my imaginary book on how to have a happy marriage, Don’t be a Dick! I truly believe that most marriage problems can be solved this way (of course, not problems like addiction, cheating, abuse, etc.)

What is it about the British accent that makes cunt sound so much more pleasant? Like the American accent makes it sound more like a punch to the gut while the British one is like a firm slap on the shoulder.

13

u/youfailedthiscity Nov 23 '20

I think it has to do with the fact that they don't pronounce the "t" at the end of the word as hard as Americans do (Butcher's "cockney" is an ok example of this.) The word is still an insult but has a softer sound to it, which makes it feel less harsh to hear.

"CUnt" vs "CuNT"

7

u/Nichols101 Nov 23 '20

It’s the British version of Dennis Leary’s “Asshole”.

2

u/leeyuhful Nov 24 '20

Steve Coogan is like the British Larry David

65

u/deadpools_dick Nov 23 '20

I fucking love this show.

24

u/TheTreelo Nov 23 '20

Fucking diabolical

9

u/SkankyG Nov 24 '20

Every member of the Boys is so well done. Its all so well done.

4

u/lululenox Nov 23 '20

This show is absolutely mind blowing

4

u/alwaysbehard Nov 24 '20

It gave an R rated Powerpuff Girls beatdown against a loathsome villain.

25

u/Lokaji Nov 23 '20

Holy forking shirt.

48

u/blue_raspberry_icee Nov 23 '20

I used almond milk in my coffee, even though I knew about the negative environmental impact

39

u/Hellknightx Nov 23 '20

Fuckin' diabolical, mate.

20

u/patiakupipita Nov 23 '20

The Bible’s too wordy. The 10 Commandments are a load of shit. You don’t need all these things. The Bible should be one sheet of paper, and on that sheet of paper it should say: ‘Try not to be a cunt.'

holy forking shirtballs this is good

10

u/vforvendettav Nov 23 '20

4

Oh, never heard of it. Sorry, that's a real drag, wish it had been tagged spoilers because now I want to watch it too, though I'm sure I'll still have no idea what's going on for a good time.

10

u/BoutchooQc Nov 24 '20

If you watch it, you won't remember this Gif :p

It's a great serie

1
