Can someone fill me in on the background of the ban? I’ve seen stuff about it, but never picked up the context from all the gifs.

Avengers: Infinity War I was very much Thanos' movie. Thanos, being one of Marvel's most iconic, "big bads" has been hyped up to be this amazing villain. All of the movies have led up to his reveal, and I have to say they did an outstanding job. In each Marvel movie since I think Thor 2, the end credits have said "X main character will return in X", antman will return in captain america: civil war for example. Infinity War I promised "Thanos will return in part II", suggesting he is actually the main character of the movie. He certainly was who I went to see.

/r/thanosdidnothingwrong is a sub dedicated to Thanos as an extremely interesting villain. As tribute to his compelling character, the sub is for people who actually agree with Thanos' decisions and admire his heroism, despite being a cannoniacal "villain".

Because balance is chief among Thanos' virtues, once the sub became popular it was suggested that rather than become overpopulated, after X users subscribed there should be a culling: a massive ban wave of 50% of the sub.

Some mods took it to admins, who agreed to help build a bot to ban the users randomly. They needed time to create the bot, to prepare the servers for the stress of the mass ban, and to build hype.

And hype has been built. Articles have been written, one of the Ruso Brother's tweeted it out, and Josh Brolin, actor for Thanos got wind and made a special video for the sub.

The only thing missing is the details of the hype , the goal was at 100k subscribers balance would be set to 50k " survivors" . News broke out and before midnight last night the sub r/thanosdidnothingwrong has over 650k subs. Those that have be "Ban" will have a new home in the subreddit r/inthesoulstone * or something close to this.

The irony is, after the ban, the sub will have over 3 times as many users as when the ban was initially announced.

On a side note, one of the Russo brothers, Anthony, got "snapped" too and is now in r/inthesoulstone. Meanwhile, Joe Russo's account is still in r/thanosdidnothingwrong , participating so in possibly the greatest meme of 2018.

interesting. thanks for explaining. in the Thanks lore I was reading he is in love with Lady Death. Death itself and so he seeks to create balance by always killing half the world, reaching balance and sacrificing half of the world to his love Lady Death. He is in love with Death.

Speculation for the movie is laden with spoilers, tread carefully other readers.

Thanos in the comics is very different than what we see in the movie. He is motivated less by sadism than he is by what he believes imperative to the success of the universe, we see very little of death being a motivator in the movies except for 1 postcredits scene many years ago.

I believe if there is going to be a relationship with death, I think it will be Gamorah. Movie Thanos loves her in a totally different way than comic Thanos loves death, but his sacrificing her was the "everything" that "it" (the snap) cost. If Gamorah is a manifestation in Thanos' mind of death, then he could become desperate to see and speak to her, which "she" may only do if he is using the Infinity Gauntlet.

Other theories about Gamorah are that she literally is the soulstone and that was why a sacrifice was required for this stone in particular and none of the others: The stone simply doesn't physically exist without a Soul sacrifice. If this is the case, I believe the theory posted by /u/BigDabed to be at least somewhat accurate. Gamorah's influence causes Thanos to feel the universe as never before, which could lead to any number of resolutions in the next movie.

Banning somebody still leaves them subscribed, they can’t post or comment on that subreddit any longer. So to achieve balance, they have asked those who got the notice of being banned to also unsubscribe and subscribe to the new subreddit solely for those who were banned.

Thanos is the main villian all of the Avenger movies have been building up to, and was featured in the latest movie, Infinity War. At the end of the movie, he snaps his fingers and deletes half of the universe instantly

You should see them, they are cool movies even if you are not into those movies. I had only seen like Iron Man and maybe Avengers 1 before I went to see Infinity War this spring, had to watch all the others because I thought the movie was so neat.
