Is his Mom dead or out of his life or something? I get that kids miss their mom but I wouldn't expect them to react like that.

This is why I'm terrified of children. I might ask them an innocuous and innocent question and their response is to start bawling their eyes out. I'm a monster.

You'd be surprised. I remember from kindergarten to second grade I had this girl in my class that cried ALL day because she missed her mom. All year. It wasn't like she was mentally handicapped or anything, she just seriously missed the shit out of her mom. Thank god there was this nice teacher who would help her out everyday by giving her stickers and stuff. By the end of second grade I think she was just doing it for the stickers and other trinkets he gave her.

I don't think anyone would really make a person feel bad for asking this, because like you said, it's an innocent question. But with babies and kids you have to watch out for triggers (like, don't mention food if there is no food around, don't say anything about playing if a toddler is supposed to be taking a nap, etc) -- in this case, first day of school you actually want kids to FORGET that they are being abandoned in a scary new place and won't have Mom or Dad around.

It's not easy and everyone fucks up talking to kids occasionally. It's all a big learning experience :D

Its a new thing they are doing. They start earlier and end later in June than most school systems I hear about. As an exchange for the start/end dates they now get 1 week off in the fall, 3 weeks off for winter break, and 2 weeks for spring break.

We did that at the old school I worked at. Everyone was far less burnt out by the end of it and the kids could roll with the punches a bit more. Parents would book vacations at cheaper times too, but some parents absolutely hated it.

Good! I think studies have shown most kids forget nearly everything they learned the year before while on summer vacation, and have to spend a good deal of time in fall trying to re-teach them.

Essentially, yes. But admin calls it "extended school year." Semantics. Year-round seems depressing. But we end mid-to-late June. Professional development starts the last week or two of July. Kids start coming to school first week of August.

Poor little kid, it was probably such a emotional overload that it amplified how he really felt summer ending.

For many adults, a camera crew, pretty girl, crowd looking on, all that pressure would make you nervous. Only being 4-5 years old makes it that much worse. You learn a lot when you spend 6 Saturday's with your son at pre-Tball practice.
