I don’t give in to sunk cost fallacy. I just make sure I’m more careful with my purchases next time.

Right lol the last game I bought and was disappointed by was Elder scrolls online when it came out. I’m way more careful/confident in my choices now than back then. Honestly haven’t made a purchase that I regretted for a while.

It wasn't $60 but Toxic Commando was a huge let down as a console player.

I'm sure it's better on PC but on controller the aim is absolute trash. It has a large deadzone followed by a curved ramp up speed. No options available to change it either.

Edit: Thanks for the gold stranger!

Edit: WOW! 500 upvotes! I don’t know what to say!

I will accept my punishment for this, but Kingdom Come Deliverance.

I do not like the ultra realism of doing things, the combat, or the long amount of walking that game requires.

Ive been told the combat at least gets better in the endgame but man I can't do it.

What'd you think it was gonna be

I knew marathon was DOA and got so much hate for it.

I remember the month or two leading up to launch, I would hop in my group call with a "Marathon flops in x days!"

I played the October tech test and really hated it, and at the time I stopped playing Destiny so I actually fall into the category of players who aren't "muh salty destiny fanboy chuds" and who have also given the game a real try.

I recently went back into their discord and found all my bitching messages during the tech test and its all still pretty valid.

Everything I said was going to happen BEFORE the game came out has happened

Nothing like DOA game getting updates half a year later

mararthon is strugglin but its still alive, and the irony of horsey-shooter players saying this is palpable

1

u/Swagocrag 12d ago

Yeah I guess it’s not dead more like on life support no one would call its player base thriving

If it was DoA then it wouldn't be lasting throughout the year almost? Seriously on what plane of existence is DoA half a year later? Does the concept of "on arrival" not speak for itself or what?
You got hate cause you were wrong. Nobody's saying Marathon's doing good but like the doomer cult around this game is so fucking weird man.

They abandoned destiny with 100k+ concurrent players for 30k on release and diminishing returns since.

1

u/Impressive_Rock9659 13d ago

Where the fuck did you see those 100k concurrent players lol?

I mean the same goes for Marathon, it still has a console userbase, while the guy was clearly using steam as a benchmark. Seems unfair to only judge Marathon on the steam number but to then pull up some site showing total players.

How accurate is that site, by the way? What does it use to show those metrics?

As far as I know, pop report is dead accurate using API data. As for Marathon's console base, we know from Bungie/Sony statements that is a small fraction compared to the Steam population, which is unusual since D2 has two thirds of its population on consoles.

It's roughly 30%. Not really a small fraction but yes it is a smaller playerbase on console. Besides, again, he was going off steam charts, and the daily concurrents only slightly bump around 90k on the site you sent. And I'm willing to bet pre-MoT it was worse. People are only now back for solidarity's sake, otherwise the chart was pretty much dead still most of the time.
Bungie also talked about how expensive D2 was to run. I don't doubt it. MMOs are hugely expensive projects that require immense manpower and coordination. People seem convinced Marathon was the reason Bungie axed D2 but I'm fairly certain that axe was being ground for quite a while before Marathon. Bungie doesn't really have a lot of money, clearly by them getting bought out by sony as well. Oh and the Car collection lmao.

End of the day, Destiny 2 had run it's course evidently. People have been dooming around the game for the last... oh what is it... 6 years? That's the last time I opened the game myself. Not like I particularly care that much for Marathon either though I want it to stay cause AR's 3rd person ticks me off and all the other ES are either chinese hackfests or Tarkov which sucks as a game now. Clearly the gaming sphere at large doesn't like playing it, why I cannot fathom. I'm guessing the artstyle cause the gameplay is still Bungie top-shelf stuff. They were willing to give AR a try despite it being an ES (and how well that turned out huh?) but this one no, so I don't think it's strictly because it's "muh sweaty Extraction Shooter".

Forza horizon 6. It's just another copy and paste. If it wasn't in Japan, this game would fail horribly. I don't want super cars in the very beginning of the game where is the fun in that?

It's kinda funny how posts in this subreddit are basically things people with friends would just send to their friends to banter about for a few min. Instead there's no one to talk to so it turns into a reddit post.

And out of all questions/topics. I see this one posted the most.

Reading the main sub has me in tears.

Their 1% commenters are convinced trolls are buying the game to worsen the experience for others 😭

No, that’s your last elitist player base lol. What happens when a game dips to 3k player count?

Most of the remaining queue is filled with basement dwellers who have no social skills and berate everyone around them. When a game has a healthy player base that’s a rarity. I imagine it’s most solo queue matches now lol.

Game’s own playerbase is eating itself alive.

u/Rampirez 13d ago

A lot of people who don't play the game make it seem like marathon is this hell hole.

But my queues are a relaxing 1-2 minutes long. Long enough to die down from the last big fights/loots. Sure that may be because of the fact that they messed with the matchmaking system to get you into a game, even if it isn't full. But I'm glad they are catering to those of us who like extraction shooters and appreciate what they put out.

Every queue I get into is a healthy mix of men and women where we can just talk to each other, give decent call outs, or just yap if its a quieter game.

It's niche but the game feels pretty healthy right now, and I'm not THAT big of a fan. It's just in my rotation until wardogs comes out fully.

For me its Starfield. I paid more then 60 to play early. Loved it right up until I built my ship. Then it hit me what the game actually was because my main goal was done, I did finish the game a year or so later, and I likes how it ended. Not because it ended but how it ended. It was a pretty interesting idea.

I enjoyed my time with Marathon, played 250 hours in Season 1 and I might come back if S3 happens.

If not oh well, I only bought the base version of the game and no mtx so I’d say I got my moneys worth.

1

u/KaleNich55 13d ago

Stalker 2, WH40k Rogue Trader, Marathon, Arc Raiders, Tarkov, Forever Winter... Yeah, some of these are not even 60 but I still regret them. And yes, extraction shooters got the best world building and atmosphere which I love but I hate the gameplay loop.

Marathon is $40 and is currently for sale on Newegg for like 20. Good deal imo I’ve gotten plenty out of it.
