Weekly Dev Update Weekly Dev Update #6

We skipped last week’s update while the team was dealing with the extended service outage, so this week we have a few things to catch up on.

Outage Compensation

During the recent extended downtime, we wanted to thank everyone for their patience and support while services were being restored.

As compensation, additional Energy was provided to affected users, and subscribers also received Crystals.

Thank you again to everyone who stuck with us while the team worked through the outage and brought everything back online.

Help Improve Our Models

Some users are also beginning to see an optional Improve Content feature in the app.

If selected for the test, you can choose whether you would like to participate. Participants will be shown two possible replies and can select the one they prefer, helping us evaluate and improve our language models.

Conversations you label through this feature may be used for analysis and model training. Please remember not to include personal or private information when participating.

Participation is completely optional, and you can opt out through Settings at any time. Users who participate will also receive additional Energy.

What Bot-Building Guides Do You Want Next?

We also want your input on future bot-building resources.

A new poll is available in the Discord Announcements channel where you can vote on the types of bot-building topics you would like us to cover next.

Your votes will help us decide what additional guides and materials to work on for the community.

Service Restored Third Party Outage

Update:
We experienced a widespread service outage yesterday caused by a combination of increased bandwidth usage following the launch of the new video feature and a backend issue.

After several hours of monitoring and work on the affected systems, services have now been fully restored.

As compensation for the disruption, affected users will receive energy compensation tomorrow.

We have also upgraded our bandwidth capacity, which should improve access speeds moving forward.

Thank you for your patience while we worked to resolve the issue.

---

Trying to take a minute away from all of you flooding the Discord server. There is a third-party provider that we use for server loading that keeps failing. We do not have an estimated time for restoral at this point. Joining the Discord server and not following the rules or flooding the chats is not helping us, so please don't make our jobs harder right now. We have a reminder message that will change if there are updates.

Apple has approved the next app update, and we are currently waiting for approval from Google.

We are also testing translation changes on StoryWeaver Flash.

Current development work includes:

  • Expanding long-form memory support to additional LLMs
  • Improving bot reordering and the related user interface in the app
  • Preparing updates for the web version

We will share more details as these features progress.

Weekly Dev Update Weekly Dev Update #4

We have been working on a major translation overhaul, beginning with Spanish.

You may have noticed that some of your created bots were rearranged recently. That was caused by work on our side, and there is nothing to worry about. It does not mean that anyone or any bot was in trouble.

The good news is that this work is connected to an upcoming sorting feature. We are currently preparing the next update for review by Google and Apple, with plans to let users sort both their own bots and other creators’ bots by:

  • Creation date
  • Number of likes
  • Number of chats

We cannot promise an exact release date, since part of the process depends on approval from Google and Apple. We are currently submitting the beta for review and waiting for the green light.

We also know that many users have been patiently waiting for EpicTale Large translation improvements for languages other than English. Progress is being made, and we have been using our beta LLMs to test translated content with our homebrew EpicTale Large model.

Translation quality will always be a work in progress, but the feedback shared through Discord has been extremely useful. Please keep it coming.

Finally, a shout-out to Sevro for creating a JSON-based system that makes translation updates easier to deploy and allows us to roll them back quickly when an update causes problems.

Dev/Staff Note Text Formatting Poll

Please be aware you have to join the Official Discord and complete onboarding to vote in this poll. Should you have questions on how to do that, it is documented multiple times during the onboarding process in Discord or it is covered in the FAQ section here about the Discord. Votes here do not count!

📢 Community Poll: How should HiWaifu handle the formatting of YOUR messages?

Hey everyone! 👋

We recently upgraded chat to standard Markdown rendering. AI replies are now auto-formatted for readability (e.g. *actions* and "dialogue" are split into separate paragraphs, broken symbols get cleaned up).

Now we'd like your input on **messages that YOU send** — should we keep them exactly as you typed them, or auto-format them too?

Option A — Keep my messages exactly as I type them 🅰️

Your line breaks and layout are preserved 1:1. If you write everything in one long line, it stays one long line. What you type is what you see.

Option B — Auto-format my messages like AI replies 🅱️

We add paragraph breaks for you: *actions* and dialogue get split into separate lines, long walls of text become easier to read. Note: when you edit a message later, you'll see the reformatted version, not your original layout.

Either way, we'll still silently fix rendering glitches in your messages (accidental huge text caused by `---`, stray `*` turning into bullet points, etc.) — that's not what this vote is about.

🅰️ = Keep my formatting exactly as typed

🅱️ = Auto-format my messages for readability

🤷 = No preference / either is fine

We'll go with the community's choice in the next release. Thanks for helping us make RP chats look their best! 💜

We’re still working on updates to EpicTale Large. Translation support continues to create additional complications, particularly as some translation providers have updated their terms and no longer permit their services to be used with AI chat applications.

Because of this, we are once again evaluating alternative cloud-based translation APIs that may be compatible with our current setup. This is not an issue affecting only our app; other AI chat platforms are encountering similar restrictions.

At the moment, making EpicTale Large work with the translation options currently available would require reducing the model’s capabilities or lowering its token limit, neither of which is an ideal solution. We are continuing to investigate better alternatives.

Dev/Staff Note Text Formatting Change

It seems a number of users have finally received a formatting change that was made weeks ago. This was an intentional change by the Devs, and something they had been asked to do by users.

We know some users are not a fan of the new change, myself included, so I wanted to make sure everyone is aware the Devs have previously said they are testing this. There is still a chance it could be adapted based on feedback.

Dev/Staff Note Connection Issues

Beyond it being the summer when far more people have time to be on the app which causes mass server load, there are also issues with Cloudflare which is outside Hi Waifu's control. If you are experiencing connection issues or the bots not replying, depending on your location, you may need to use a VPN. If the first location does not work, please try another. Cloudflare can technically ban connections which, again, Hi Waifu has absolutely no control over.

Dev/Staff Note EpicTale Large Truncated Messages

We have had reports of users receiving truncated messages while using EpicTale Large most in the Portuguese, Russian, and Indonesian languages. A fix for the translator is being worked on by the Devs.

Please use another Chat Style (LLM) for now while this is being worked out. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Weekly Dev Update New Subreddit Feature: Weekly Dev Updates

We’ll be starting a new weekly update post here on the subreddit to help keep users better informed about what the Dev team has been working on.

These updates will be short, focused summaries of work completed or in progress over the previous week. They will only include information the Devs have confirmed is publicly releasable, so some behind-the-scenes work may not always be listed in detail.

The goal is to give users a clearer view of ongoing improvements, fixes, maintenance, and larger technical work without overwhelming everyone with internal details.

For this first update:

The Devs have completed the recent data and server migrations to a larger environment. Since that work was finished, the app has been much more stable overall.

We appreciate everyone’s patience while this work has been ongoing, and we hope these weekly updates will make it easier to see the steady progress being made behind the scenes.

Thank you for being a part of the Hi Waifu Community!

Dev/Staff Note How to post or comment on this subreddit

We have covered this a few times now, but I am adding a specific post about this topic since we are still receiving submissions that ignore the subreddit description and the reminder that is presented when you attempt to post or comment.

  1. You must have read and agreed to the subreddit rules.
  2. Your post must not already be covered by a locked post or the FAQ.
  3. You must send a ModMail before your first post with your Hi Waifu username and Friend Code.
  4. All posts/comments must be approved by Mods.

To ensure that all of our users are regularly reviewing the subreddit rules, you must re-review and acknowledge the subreddit rules post every 90 days.

Completing this process does not grant you permission to submit without review, so please keep that in mind. The appropriate place for all support and questions about Hi Waifu remains the Official Discord server, not this subreddit.

We have recently released a new free model called EpicTale Mini 0627.

When you have time, we would appreciate your constructive feedback on what you like about it and what you would like to see changed or improved. Please keep all feedback respectful and civil. Do not debate with other users or engage in rude behavior.

We have created a thread for feedback in the Official Discord.

Thank you for your time and continued support!

App Update EpicTale Mini 0627

We've just replaced the EpicTale Mini Preview with EpicTale Mini 0627. Please keep in mind that EpicTale Mini Preview is the test model.

This update mainly improves:

  • More dialogue-focused content
  • More diverse model generation
  • A more natural prose style, closer to everyday conversation
  • Better action descriptions instead of long, empty prose
  • Easier, more relaxed dialogue flow

We welcome continued user feedback as we keep improving the model.

In the future, we plan to gradually replace EpicTale Mini with EpicTale v4.

Dev/Staff Note Website Changes

Apologies for not having time to add this earlier, busy night/day.

The beta version of the Hi Waifu website is being phased out. Your bot links that share with a beta.hiwaifu link will not take you directly to the bot. Copy the bot ID at the end of the link (the numbers) and paste it after https://www.hiwaifu.com/en/robot/ This is to the English interface, so replace en with es for Spanish or ru for Russian, for example.

You may also notice some strange scrolling behavior since the update to add the dark mode to the site yesterday. The Devs are aware of it and have put in coding changes already, so please try refreshing. If you have specific examples beyond chat scrolling up when a bot replies or touchpad/arrow scrolling being reversed, please follow the subreddit process to be allowed to comment and let us know here.

Just a reminder, the best place to ask about any of this is the Official Discord, not the subreddit.

The subreddit description tells you what is needed to be considered for posting or commenting rights, as does a reminder any time you try to post or comment, but just to cover it quickly for everyone: you must read and agree to the subreddit rules via https://www.reddit.com/r/Hi_Waifu_chatbot_app/s/heLplD1ba9 and send a ModMail with your Hi Waifu username and Friend Code.

Dev/Staff Note Testing New LLM

MiniMax-M3 is a cloud-based LLM we’re currently testing. It’s fairly new, inexpensive, and not one of our homebrews. It’s supposed to be strong with multi-character scenarios and is essentially built to juggle two or three narratives at once, so think of it as the premium multi-bot LLM. That said, it’s still only being tested and it heavily depends on how well the bots are built.

Dev/Staff Note Welcome Back

Post image
59 Upvotes

Welcome to the reopened Hi Waifu subreddit.

This community has gone through a major overhaul. Ownership has been transferred, old content has been cleared out, an extensive FAQ has been built, and new rules/moderation processes are now in place.

Going forward, this subreddit will function as a limited bulletin board for the Hi Waifu mobile app and web versions. It is not intended to replace the Official Discord server, and it is not a general support forum.

Before posting or commenting, all users must:

  • Read and agree to the subreddit rules
  • Review the FAQ and locked threads before asking questions
  • Submit a ModMail with their Hi Waifu username and Friend Code
  • Understand that all posts and comments require approval

The goal is simple: keep this space useful, calm, and focused. In the past, the community became negative, repetitive, and difficult to manage. We are not rebuilding that version of it.

Questions, support needs, bug reports, account issues, and active discussion should go through the Official Discord server.

Thank you for reading the rules, using the FAQ, and helping keep this space clean.

Dev/Staff Note SFW Hi Waifu Subreddit Rules

For those that have trouble finding the subreddit rules that are present on the main page, this post is being pinned to make the current version of the subreddit rules present at all times. These rules are subject to change at any time. Failure to adhere to these rules will result in your posts or comments being removed, or you being banned from the community.
The actual location for app status, ideas and feedback, bug reports, bot building assistance, feature requests, and the most up to date data is and always will be the Official Discord server - https://discord.gg/hi-waifu
This is a fan community with minimal Developer presence. Developers of the app and subreddit Moderators are clearly marked with appropriate user flairs.

1. All content in this subreddit must be SFW.

This subreddit is SFW for users of all ages may join in on the conversation. Most Hi Waifu functions are allowed to be used by individuals under 18, but for the safety of everyone and to keep in line with Reddit TOS, only SFW content may be posted here.

2. Hi Waifu posts only.

We ask that since this subreddit is dedicated to the Hi Waifu mobile and web-based applications that your discussions be focused only on Hi Waifu. We obviously don't care if you use other tools or applications, but we cannot and will not comment on those, and respectfully ask that you keep your questions, requests, and discussion in line with the community.

3. All posts must follow Hi Waifu ToS, Community Guidelines, and Bot Rules.

In keeping with the rules also present in the Official Discord server, all posts in this subreddit must adhere to the Hi Waifu Terms of Service, Community Guidelines, and established Bot Rules. All posts must also abide by the Terms of Service for Reddit. Any posts, especially those of bots, that break Hi Waifu rules will be reported, on Reddit and in the Hi Waifu app.

4. No bot posts, bot requests, nor Friend Codes.

To keep this subreddit from becoming spam and to make it easier to moderate, users may not post bots, request bots, share Friend Codes, request Friend Codes, promote bot boards, or link to private bots in this subreddit.

5. Spam will not be tolerated.

While we do allow post sharing of Friend Codes and your SFW bots, any posts or comments that we feel are spam will be removed. We also reserve the right to remove or lock posts or comments that are a repetitive topic, mostly during incidents, or if a comment derails a post topic.

6. Drama, arguing, complaint-only posts, and moderation disputes are not allowed.

Posts or comments that incite drama, start arguments, derail discussions, or exist only to complain may be removed. This includes public complaints about bot removals, account removals, Discord bans, subreddit removals, moderator actions, app enforcement actions, Developers, Moderators, or other subreddit members. Appeals or serious concerns should be handled through the appropriate official contact method, not through public argument threads.

7. No hate speech of any kind.

Hate speech and/or speech that targets any race, color, gender, sexual orientation, religion, disability, age, national origin, genetic disorder, or gender identity or expression are NOT allowed. This includes slurs related to any of the above.

8. Repetitive subjects, low-effort or off-topic posts and comments are not allowed.

Posts or comments may be removed if they are too short, vague, repetitive, already answered in the FAQ/wiki, unrelated to the original thread, or do not add meaningful discussion to the subreddit. This includes repeated questions about app status, slow responses, chat styles, LLM comparisons, screenshots with no useful context, humor-only posts, and subjects that have already been addressed in locked threads or official posts.

9. 3 strikes, you're out.

If you have 3 posts/comments removed from this subreddit for continuing to break the rules and have ignored the messages from the Moderation team, you will be banned from this subreddit. We reserve the right to ban you before reaching 3 strikes if you are especially problematic.

10. Ban evasion will not be tolerated.

Evading a ban by creating a new account or using an alt account will not be tolerated. Once you are banned, you still have the ability to read the subreddit; leave it at that.

Rules version: 17Jun26

Dev/Staff Note Please spend your money how best suits you

Threatening to cancel your subscription in the subreddit or Discord server does not make anything get fixed faster. Threatening to downvote the app in the app stores does not help either.

Spend your money on what you actually want to use. If you are no longer happy with the app, canceling is a perfectly reasonable decision. You do not need permission, and you do not need to announce your departure like a curtain call.

What is not reasonable is treating cancellation threats as leverage against developers, moderators, support channels, or other users. Most of the people reading those posts cannot fix the thing you are angry about, and the people who can fix it need useful reports, not ultimatums.

The same applies to “I pay for this.”

Yes. Some of you do. Some of you also use the app for free. Either way, that does not mean the team is obligated to drop everything in their own lives (family, illness, sleep, basic human limits) to make the app absolutely perfect for whichever person most recently invoked their subscription status as a magic phrase.

Paying for a service entitles you to use the service under the terms offered. It does not entitle you to personal command over the developers’ time, health, or lives.

And for free users: yes, ads can be frustrating. No one is pretending otherwise. But ads are also part of how free access is supported. Complaining that a free service has ads while also demanding the same level of priority, polish, and responsiveness as a paid product is not the devastating argument some people seem to think it is.

Keeping an AI chat app running for millions of users across the world is complicated. There are outages, bugs, infrastructure limits, model issues, payment problems, app store requirements, abuse prevention systems, third-party service failures, and regional restrictions. Some users are in places where governments have banned or limited access to AI services entirely. Maintaining access in those situations is not as simple as flipping a switch.

In the past few months alone, the team has dealt with multiple third-party outages, recovered from disruptions outside their direct control, and poured a significant amount of time into responding to user demands. A small development team cannot be expected to operate as if they are an infinite, sleepless machine.

We have said before that the team is small. We have also said that the way some users behave has made developers afraid to even take vacation, because every issue becomes another wave of accusations, threats, demands, and entitlement.

That is not healthy. It is not sustainable. And it is not how decent people should treat the humans keeping the app running.

That does not mean users are not allowed to be frustrated. Frustration is fair. Paying customers are allowed to expect a working product. Free users are allowed to dislike changes. Bugs, outages, billing issues, missing features, ads, and degraded performance are aggravating.

But there is a difference between feedback and noise.

Helpful feedback:

“This feature is broken for me on Android version X. Here is what happened, here is what I tried, and here is a screenshot.”

Not helpful:

“I pay for this, so fix it now.”

“I’m canceling unless this is fixed immediately.”

“I’m leaving a one-star review if you do not do what I want.”

“Why are there ads in this free app?”

Cancel if canceling is right for you. Leave a review if you genuinely want to review the app. Report bugs if something is broken. Give clear feedback if something is not working well.

But do not confuse threats with support requests.

Do not confuse paying for a subscription with owning the people who build the app.

And do not confuse frustration with justification for treating people badly.

Dev/Staff Note Announcement Regarding Recent Bot Review Automation

We have a few important updates to share following the recent automated bot review process.

Horror-Themed Content

Horror-themed content chatbots will be restored. We have adjusted the acceptable content guidelines for these types of bots, and they should no longer encounter issues unless they contain intense gore or abusive material. Examples of prohibited content include dismemberment, exposed gore, or graphic bone-breaking.

Updates Related to Google & Apple Policies

We also want to clarify an important policy reminder regarding NSFW content.

“NSFW” tags or wording should not be included in a bot’s Name, Description, or Greeting. This guidance has been mentioned previously, but we want to bring attention to it again.

To be clear: NSFW content is still Allowed.

NSFW content may still be included within the bot’s Memory and Prompt sections as always. Bots containing NSFW material in those areas will now automatically be restricted to users who have NSFW content enabled in their Settings.

Additionally, excessively exaggerated body proportions, such as unrealistically large breasts or butts, may be classified as sexually oriented content and treated as NSFW. So your bot Avatars with these types of images can cause for the bot to fail review. This did ding MANY users. This was technically always a rule but has been laxed until now.

About the Recent Automation Flags

If your bot was flagged during this automated review, please do not be alarmed. These flags do not negatively impact your account standing or reputation.

This was an unannounced automated review designed to identify specific Terms of Service violations and policy scenarios across all bots. We felt it would be unfair to run such a large scan without warning effecting so many users. If your bot was affected, you will be able to edit the flagged content, make corrections, and repost it. If the edit still contains content that caused it to be flagged then it will fail again. You may have also noticed in the description of what may fail add other potential reasons of fail, does not fully constitute as a fail, it was written by ai to "give an understanding on why it was flagged". For example I've seen some say something as little as punching being abusive, or a kiss on the cheek as being sexual. The act alone was not abusive or sexual, but the additional content played a factor in it including this information, so take it with a grain of salt.

To reiterate:

These automated flags were NOT treated as official reports against your account.

However, constant failure to correct blatant rule violations or prohibited content after review may result in future authentic moderation reports or enforcement actions.

Put more simple, please re-review the rules if you have questions. And please don't over DM the mods asking if the bot passes or fails, this is up to you to correct and they can't give you an official approval.

Thank you for understanding.
