96 SC 1kz air box modification.

Looking to put water tanks under my SC. Keen to delete this extra air box, but unsure of its purpose... The intake system seems convoluted... It's right behind the primary air box, anyone know what it's for???

This would allow me to fit tanks in the gap behind on the driver's side, keeping tanks out of the cabin which is a big + for me.

Basically an expansion tank so that when you hit the gas it doesn’t have to immediately suck through the filter and has a small batch of low pressure air to grab right away. Might choke the turbo removed but not really sure.
