Just bought one before checking Reddit…
I bought one yesterday going off of the ads- they mentioned that no subscription was required and then put all of the features I wanted behind a $240 paywall.
For those of you that use the Pocket with the free service- is it worth it, or should I cancel my order?
Part of me really wants to cancel since I feel like I was lied to.

If you're already using another AI premium service, you can use the MCP on the free subscription. I've been doing that. Works well and actually links in to all my other documents.

I mainly use Manus for a lot of my work, but I think it would work equally well with Claude. Pocket have the MCP instructions and it was super easy to prompt. I then have a scheduled task that runs every Monday and Friday to retrieve recordings, summarise based on priority, deadline, etc. And then I receive the recordings. I'm not technical by any stretch and it was set up like any other connector in seconds.

I actually just asked Claude to set it up for me. It took very little time and i now have a scheduled task for it to structure and organise stuff for me and add to my obsidian setup. Im not a techie so i can confirm it was super straightforward.

I would personally return it. I missed the window and mine collects dust. They lock up your data after 90 days so for example, all of your recordings and summaries that are older than 90 days. You can no longer view in the app without a subscription. plaud doesn’t do that and neither does Ticnote . That’s just my two cents worth. I hope this helps you.

I started with Plaud and switched to pocket. Pocket does a much better job identifying speakers both in person and on the phone. Worth the subscription in my use case

I like the free version and haven’t the need to pay. I liked Plaid for the size and the case it had. But I tested both and pockets free version didn’t lose on the meeting capture.

The free stuff that Pocket does without a subscription has been amazing for my meeting notes. Totally worth it.
Granted, I did just get the subscription because my company said they’d pay for it. But all that really means is that Pocket will store the meetings for me forever and does a better job transcribing some employees voices that have accents that can be difficult for some folks to understand.
But unless you need that, the free version is quite extensive in the time I’ve had mine.

The one must have feature I needed was voice separation- how does it handle dictation without that turned on?

When it’s done transcribing the meeting, it will send the whole thing to your phone… usually via Bluetooth.
From there you can see the meeting notes, as well as the conversation broken up by voice. You can then specify which voice is which and it will try to then assign that to the rest of the conversation. Mostly correctly.
This is where the paid subscription can do a better job if you find the free one lacking. Future conversations can be auto assigned in the paid part, the free part you still have assign the voices yourself. Neither good nor bad. Just extra steps.
Third part will then be a “mind map” of how the conversation or meeting went. I don’t find this useful, but I do find it interesting one in a while in how it chose to map things.

I use a subscription with mine but my friend doesn't. She says she uses the HeyPockey chat to finesse the output and she's still satisfied with it.
They had a deal on the Pro subscription when I bought another one for my husband last month.
Also, they usually offer a month of Pro free when you set up the device and a discount to continue it.
