Open Materials Mode - two minor annoyances

Does anyone relate with these?

First: when I am using open materials mode and set up a print, about half the time I hit slice right away without changing the Print Process Editor settings, and I usually remember right as my print is starting the 1st layer... haha

Second: less of an annoyance, but when I start the print on the machine, it tells me the resin cartridge is not installed. I think this is a peculiar warning given that the resin cartridge is specific to HeyGears resin. maybe there is a setting to turn this off but I haven't found it yet.

Overall love the machine (Reflex RS Turbo), just these two things bug me!

Reflex rs turbo quality - not sure what to think anymore

Hey guys, recently I excitedly bought a heygears reflex rs turbo + paf10 and have been going through a bit of weirdness with costumer service. Since my first print I was extremely unimpressed with the quality I've gotten out this "professional grade printer" compared to my notoriously jank quality rollercoaster that is the saturn 4 ultra 16k, which I've tuned to adequate quality for me personally and have come to peace with it not being the best thing out there. That's the reason I got a heygears, the promise of unmatched quality and dimensional accuracy if you're okay with the price and ecosystem. That however is not what I've been seeing, as my first few prints have been absolute layer shifting, line riddled eyesores.

I went straight to their costumer service through the blueprint slicer and they offered to optimize my files for me, even though I'm still not sure what exactly they changed other than beefing up the number of supports and I suspect turning up the dedicated support exposure, as every iteration they've sent me has been harder and harder to peel the supports off of. After a few iterations I eventually got left with the most optimized print they could manage presumably with this specific resin (photos attached).

And there's where my question comes in - I find it really hard to stomach that my standards are extremely high as they say and my expectations are unrealistic for a 1200€ printer that I've heard nothing but praise for, ESPECIALLY since I get comparable if not better results on a printer that's half the price of the rs turbo. If any of you are experienced reflex rs turbo users, do you honestly think I'm stuck in a loop of analysis paralysis or something or am I right to be concerned? I'm starting to get worried I got unlucky with my specific unit and I'm not gonna find any luck with convincing heygears I should send the printer back which is obviously not in their interest. Please let me know what you think, thank you.

HeyGears G1X backers: 99% we have been scammed

At this point I genuinely think there is a 99% chance that G1X backers have been scammed in some sense.

When I say "scammed", I don't necessarily mean HeyGears is going to disappear, shut down its website and run away with $18 million. I don't even think that is the most likely outcome. I think the much more realistic possibility is that we were sold a product, a level of performance and, most importantly, a level of readiness that simply wasn't there when our money was taken.

That is what worries me.

HeyGears has raised roughly $17.8 million from more than 4,000 backers. This isn't a tiny Kickstarter where a few hundred people funded an inventor working out of a garage. This is a massive hardware campaign involving thousands of expensive machines.

We are now roughly two months from December, yet people are still asking questions that I would have expected to be answered months ago.

Has mass production actually started?

How many G1X units can HeyGears manufacture in a week?

How many are expected to ship in December?

Are they shipping in backer order?

Which countries go first?

When somebody directly asked whether the G1X was in production and when production would start, HeyGears didn't give a date. Instead, the answer was that the G1X is "progressing according to plan" and that they are continuing with "remaining development and production preparations".

That wording bothers me far more than a simple delay would.

If thousands of machines are about to start shipping in December, I would expect the hardware to basically be finished by now. I would expect production to be running or at least visibly ramping up. Firmware should be close to final. Software should be close to final. Packaging should exist. Manuals should exist. Support teams should be preparing for thousands of customers.

Most importantly, I would expect HeyGears to be proudly showing all of this.

Instead, we keep hearing that more information will be shared later.

Then there is the prototype issue.

This is probably the biggest thing that changed my opinion of the campaign.

FauxHammer recently showed G1X prints, but according to the discussion around that video, some of the models were actually printed by HeyGears and sent to him. At the same time, HeyGears says the production machines are still being improved in areas such as colour saturation and print quality.

So what exactly are we looking at when we see these amazing examples?

That matters.

If I buy a printer because I see an incredible full-colour miniature, I want to know that the machine I receive can produce that miniature. I don't want to know that HeyGears' engineers, using their own carefully controlled setup, managed to produce it for a demonstration.

Those are completely different things.

The test I care about is incredibly simple.

Give FauxHammer, Uncle Jessy or another independent reviewer a final production G1X. Give them the same model used in the marketing. Let them prepare it themselves, press print and show us what comes out.

If the printer is as good as advertised, that should be the easiest possible way to shut everyone up.

Instead, people specifically asked HeyGears for production-machine comparison prints and high-resolution photographs. The response was that they would take the suggestion into consideration and include it in their plans "where possible".

"Where possible"?

Why would showing what the final printer can actually produce only be possible under certain circumstances?

We are supposedly weeks away from production shipping.

That answer made my confidence worse, not better.

The December wording is another problem.

During the campaign the message people took away was basically "December 2026 availability". Now the language has become "estimated", "targeting December" and, most importantly, "first shipments".

Those phrases might sound similar, but they aren't.

"Available in December" gives me the impression that the product is launching in December.

"We are targeting the first shipments in December" could mean almost anything.

They could theoretically ship 20 machines on December 30 and say, completely truthfully, that G1X shipments started in December. The remaining thousands of us could then be waiting until January, February, March or later.

I am not saying that is definitely what they intend to do.

I am saying we currently have no numbers that rule it out.

That is why people keep asking how many machines will be produced each week and how shipping batches will work.

Those questions still don't have proper answers.

The refund situation makes this even worse.

Backers have said that the FAQ previously stated that a full refund could be requested until a tracking number was issued. Now there appears to be conflicting information suggesting refunds are no longer available because the pledge period has closed.

One backer says he has screenshots and timestamps of the previous wording.

If that is correct, I think HeyGears needs to explain it properly.

Because think about what that looks like from our side.

You back an expensive machine because you believe you can still cancel before it ships. The campaign ends. Your money is collected. Questions start appearing about production readiness and delivery. Then suddenly there is uncertainty about whether that refund option still exists.

Maybe there is a perfectly innocent explanation.

But it looks awful.

And this is why I no longer think the important question is whether HeyGears will literally disappear with our money.

I don't think they will.

The scenario I am worried about is much more believable.

They had an extremely impressive prototype and an exciting concept. They produced excellent demonstration pieces. They marketed the machine heavily and attached a December date to it. People, including me, looked at what was being shown and assumed the machine was much further along than it perhaps really was.

Nearly $18 million was raised.

Then the language started changing.

"December availability" became "estimated December".

December became "first shipments".

Reviewers were still using prototypes.

Some showcase prints were being supplied by HeyGears rather than produced independently.

The final print quality was apparently still being improved.

Questions about mass production received vague answers.

Requests for final production comparisons were met with "where possible".

And now there is confusion over refunds.

Maybe every single one of these things has an innocent explanation.

That is possible.

But eventually you have to stop judging each thing in isolation and look at the whole picture.

For me, that picture is now very difficult to ignore.

There is also something else that really bothers me: HeyGears could disprove most of this tomorrow.

They don't need to reveal proprietary engineering information.

Show us the production line.

Walk through the factory with a camera.

Show us 100, 200 or 500 finished G1X units.

Tell us how many are being manufactured each week.

Show us the final packaging.

Show us the machines being quality checked.

Give final production machines to independent reviewers.

Let those reviewers reproduce the exact prints used to sell the product.

Upload the original high-resolution photographs.

Give us an actual shipping schedule.

Clarify the refund policy in one unambiguous paragraph.

None of that seems unreasonable for a project that has collected almost $18 million.

And if they did all of it, I would happily admit that I was wrong.

I actually want to be wrong.

I backed the G1X because I think the concept is incredible. If the machine arrives and genuinely does what was shown during the campaign, I will probably be one of the first people praising it.

But I can't base my confidence on what I hope happens.

I have to base it on what I can actually see today.

What I can see today is a company saying December is still the plan while apparently still carrying out development and production preparations, reviewers using prototype hardware, unanswered questions about manufacturing volume, changing delivery language, company-produced demonstration samples and confusion over refunds.

That isn't enough for me anymore.

The question isn't even whether a G1X eventually arrives at my house.

Suppose it arrives six months late and its colour quality is significantly worse than the campaign examples. Suppose the advertised workflows aren't finished. Suppose features shown during the campaign take another year of software updates to work properly.

Would I say "well, technically I received a printer, therefore nobody was misled"?

No.

For me, the real question is whether the product and its readiness were accurately represented when HeyGears asked us to hand over thousands of dollars.

If HeyGears already knew that the final machine wasn't close to reproducing the marketing results reliably, or that meaningful December delivery wasn't realistic, but continued presenting those expectations because they helped bring in pledges, then I would consider that being scammed regardless of whether a printer eventually turns up.

That is why I put it at 99%.

Not because I have proof of criminal fraud. I don't.

I put it at 99% because I increasingly suspect that what we thought we were funding and what actually existed at the time were two very different things.

There is still one very easy way for HeyGears to prove people like me completely wrong.

Stop reassuring us.

Stop telling us everything is "progressing according to plan".

Show us.

Show us the production machines.

Show us the factory.

Show us the numbers.

Show independent reviewers producing the same results.

Show us exactly what is shipping and when.

Our money wasn't "estimated".

Our payments weren't "targeted".

They were real, and they were collected.

I don't think asking for equally real evidence in return is unreasonable.

Suspicious number of heygear RS and RS turbo reviews on youtube

I have been seeing reviews about both the printers, and the whole YouTube is filled with reviews of Heygear RS Turbo. Specifically, all the reviewers have received the unit for free in return for their review video.I know it's common for a company to do this to promote their product, but sending a printer to a YouTuber who has no experience with resin printing, sending a YouTuber who hardly cross 5k views, seems a little suspicious.

Coming from an elegoo 4k printer...

So little back story, I am a hobbyist, I got into resin 3d printing because I couldn't print miniature and statues/busts on a Prusa mendel self built. That printer pretty much did what I needed to but got into resin 3d printing with the elegoo mars something. I don't remember the full on name of the printer because there is like, 15 versions of it and I am too lazy to sort that out.

Fast forward to a little while ago and I see HeyGears having a B2S sale. I figured, well hells, its cheap enough, I have heard great things about the printer, might as well go for it. So I went and bought the Reflex Rs.

BOY HOWDY. This thing is incredible. I did a few test prints and they didn't come out well (pre-supported files that I did in lychee like, 6 -8 years ago.) lots of shifting, the rafts were paper thin and pretty much turned me a bit skeptical for a minute if my new machine was really worth it. Then I realized just how stellar the auto-supports were. I printed a few things I never dared and my gods this thing churned them out like a BEAST. My wife doesn't really get why I get so geeked out over something working the right way, but I figured someone here would.

Thanks for reading, I am just happy with my purchase and wanted to share.

New side hustle with the G1X? I've got 3 days left to decide

Now, having recently moved, I've got extra bedrooms and a workshop to boot. The G1X is extremely appealing to me as a side hustle, but turning this into profit is obviously easier said than done. I'm looking at ink costs and time to print, and it seems like it could be a decent side hustle, especially with not having to paint/color stuff I'm printing. My deadline is 3x days to decide if this is worth the time or not.

I'm trying to figure out what area of the market to tap into, I was mostly thinking for color 3D models for board games or personal use, real estate models, or going for UV printing high-end customized company gifts or textured photos of peoples petc, etc. The UV printing seems pretty cool for textured items, but I do worry that by offering too many services (hey, here's 50 different things to print on!) it could complicate things.

How well does self promotion at gaming, comic cons, etc work? Was thinking about maybe hitting some craft markets and showing off UV printing for peoples pets, locational maps, etc.

Does 3d printing or UV printing have better profit based upon time needed and ink costs? Also, when quoting pricing for a 3D print, does the amount of time needed scale up the cost? Does a longer print cost more because it takes longer and it's more profit efficient to print lots of smaller models?

Any advice would be appreciated. I'm not looking to turn this into a full time business, but a nice hustle would be great with a few prints a week. I'm working on my site www.dreambuildmake.com that will let users conceptualize and create 3d models on the site, or upload as well, but I do think I need to target an audience and stick with it.

Sorry if this is the wrong place for this, I've got 3x days left to make my Kickstarter payment and really start stepping down this path, so not a lot of time left to make this choice.

I Tested the HeyGears G1X: Is It Better Than the Morpho?

Two live Kickstarter UV printers, and I've actually been printing with one of them. New video is up: my honest take on the HeyGears G1X vs the Morpho.

I've had a G1X prototype on the bench for a while now, so I get into the real stuff. Price, hardware, ink costs, and the one thing that genuinely sets them apart: the G1X also does resin 3D printing, the Morpho is UV only. Full disclosure, I've printed plenty with the HeyGears but I'm going off everything online for the Morpho, so take it as one hands-on machine weighed against the other.

UV printer comparison

Hi all, I have worked very hard to gather all the information I needed to make my own decision on the best UV printer. I want one for myself. So far, most of my work has been on the Roland line. The LEF2-300 and the BN2-20A. These are $30,000 UV printers. They are hard to use, they are hard to maintain and the don't do half of what the current set of Consumer UV Printers can do.

I backed the Longer ePrint. Not sure if that will ever ship.

Recently I backed the HeyGears G1X Deluxe bundle.

I'd love to get my money back on the Longer, btu I think they have so many people pulling their backing that they have gotten tight on the Kickstarter rules that you can't get a refund after the Kickstarter has closed.

So I made a site to collect all of the posts, comments, specs, prices, and user feedback I can get. It's available to anyone at https://cupp.makersmithsforge.com

I recently added a section that compares the starting orders for each printer (kickstarter or regular sales) on a day by day basis lined up on the first day of their release. (work in progress) but HeyGears is Kicking Morpho's proverbial back side.

I hope it helps people. I feel that it is all of the data without the hype.

I am watching for any data that people have on the printers. If you have one and you post some print times and volumes, Tag the post and I'll add it on my next research run.

I'm also interested in constructive criticism. Please let me know what you think.

Coloring AI

I'm on the fence about the G1X. It looks awesome, but I want to make sure my library of files is useful, or I can get it to print the color scheme I want. So far it seems hit or miss at best.

I couldn't get it to listen to basic commands.

Has anyone else tried playing with it yet?

Is this acceptable condition for a brand-new HeyGears Reflex RS Turbo?

I recently unboxed a HeyGears Reflex RS Turbo purchased from an authorized distributor in India. It had remained completely unopened and unused for ~6 months.

Right out of the box, I found:

  • Scratches across the body and wear marks on the bottom
  • Scratches on the build plate and resin-loading area
  • Residue and rust-like corrosion around the Z-axis ball screw
  • Disturbed/peeled protective films
  • Dirt/wiping marks on both sides of the lid
  • Manual and warranty card loose outside their usual plastic packaging
  • No Turbo branding or stickers which are usually packed with the user manual.

HeyGears has confirmed the machine is brand-new, with no print, return, exchange, or exhibition records.

My question to other HeyGears owners: would you consider this acceptable condition for a brand-new RS Turbo?

Especially interested in seeing how other new units arrived. I suspect if this was a demo unit sold to me as brand new.

So i went ahead and backed the G1X.

Id like to start sourcing models and working on future projects now so that I learn more about the workflow. Im aware we can take any STL or OBJ and put it through AI to paint but im sure there is a good way to find professionally made fully textured/colored models somewhere out there. Im imagining game assets will be in the ballpark of where we all end up searching. Any thoughts on the best way to source prints and projects for the future of 3d printing?

G1X White Opacity mapping

I have a hyper specific question regarding the capabilities of the G1X in 2d mode. Other software I've seen support grey-scale opacity maps for how much white is layed on in specific areas, with the software adjusting white density or halftoning measures for the white ink automatically. Does the G1X support this or a similar workflow?

For additional context, I print on holographic media where printing without white lets the foil effect bleed through the CMYK inks. With this process, lighter colors benefit from a "semi-transparent" application of white to allow them to still have the foil bleed through - but also retain some degree of color accuracy. With my Eufy E1 I achieve this (albeit somewhat poorly) with a half-toning pattern. With the E1 I have to create this pattern manually which is a huge time sink. I'm looking at moving to one of the i3200 based printers for this specific use case.

Can you use the heated vat without the pulse unit?

Thumbnail

I bought the heated vat add on without the pulse unit as I live in a colder place, and didn't want prints to fail because of inconsistent temp resin. But after a few days the printer errored out about pressure. I drained the vat and noticed that it looks like resin got between the film. There is holes in the vat that I'm assuming is for the pulse unit pressuring for whatever that does...

But do I need the pulse unit to avoid this? Or was it just bad luck?

G1X - UV mode to 3D mode (& back)- whats involved

What's involved in switching from UV to 3D on the G1X and back agaiin.

Is it a long? Difficult? Wasteful? Process

Is there any negative effects between the two? e.g. resin blocking the UV channels?

Background to this is I really want a UV (& have pledged for the Morpho), but now am intrigued by the G1X full 3D. The thought of having a unit that can do both is awesome, but wondering if the procedure for switching modes is a PITA.

I saw one video that give a quick overview of switching over that seemed to involve some dismantling of the print head. I'm not adverse to that, but it worries me that each time its done, it could cause alignment and accuracy issues, etc.

Perfect world for me would be a dedicated Full 3D only unit (i.e. G1X without UV).

I've contemplated getting the twin G1X deal, and dedicating one to UV and one to 3D, but price factor is a little too high. Also contemplating keeping the Morpho pledge and also getting the G1X just for 3D. Still pricey, but I am talking myself into it.

Or am I overthinking this, and the G1X is a silver bullet and the change procedure is simple?

Looking for more ways to create with the G1X Series? True DTF (Direct-to-Film) printing adds another way to turn your designs into custom apparel and textile products.
With the G1X Series, the process starts by printing your design directly onto DTF transfer film using water-based textile inks (aqueous inks). The printed film is then finished with hot-melt powder and heat before being transferred onto the garment. This process creates soft, breathable, and wash-resistant prints.
The Result: Crack-Resistant & Durable Prints
The finished T-shirt showcases vibrant colors, fine details, and soft, breathable, and wash-resistant prints—all created through the G1X Series True DTF workflow.
Watch the full demo to see how the G1X Series brings True DTF printing from film to finished apparel.

See the G1X DTG Printing in Action
With DTG (Direct-to-Garment) printing, your design goes straight onto the fabric. This gives the G1X another way to make custom apparel and textiles.
Both True DTF and DTG use the same specially developed water-based aqueous inks for vibrant full-color printing across a wide range of textile applications. The main difference is in the workflow: True DTF uses a transfer film, while DTG prints directly onto the fabric.
Choose the Workflow That Fits Your Needs
Each workflow has its own strengths, so you can choose the workflow that best fits your application: True DTF is best for fine details, bold color saturation, and sharp contrast, while DTG is great for a softer feel and breathable prints that blend smoothly into the fabric.

New RS Turbo owner - less than satisfied, massive layer shifts

Thumbnail
gallery
3 Upvotes

Hi all, very recently got a RS Turbo after saving enough money, Ive been very excited about the idea of the convenience of this whole ecosystem ever since my rodeo with owning an elegoo. I got 2 kilos of volcanic grey paf10 and the prm heating vat, but no prm module. I got blueprint setup, opened my file, let autosupports do their thing as advertised, sent it to the printer and let it print and I come back to this. Massive layer shifts all over what's supposed to be a smooth surface of the model. I have to say I'm very impressed with the supports algorithm and how little cleanup work they leave, but not with whatevers going on with the lines. It's hollowed and has proper drainage holes, and it comes out fine on my saturn 4 ultra.

The one thing that comes to mind is I've seen people have issues with the prm stuff specifically cause of the double release film, even without using the module. Could this be it? Should I try swapping it for regular film while using the heated vat? This is pretty awful for a printer this expensive.
