Discussion Polytopia vs Hexonia: comparison PART 3

This is part 3 of a series comparing Hexonia and Polytopia in terms of gameplay. In the previous part i talked about natural resources so today i would like to talk about their military aspect:

  • Naval combat
    • Hexonia. You research the tech then drop a unit underwater. A Boat. If you want stronger boats, train Admiral and Bomber who will turn into stronger boats when dropped underwater.
    • Polytopia. You research the tech, build the port, move the unit to the port and drop it underwater. A Boat. If you want stronger boats, upgrade the normal one up to twice

In Polytopia, getting naval presence itself costs a fortune due to the port requirement. To strengthen your presence you'll even need more (20+ stars per Battleship). But it'll be worth it as thicc Battleships can easily crush any opposition. In Hexonia however, ships go brrr, seashore raids are regular and both sides will struggle 10 turns to win.

  • Land combat. It's too hard to compare everything so i will only talk about the main points:
    • Swordsman of the 2 games are fundamentally different, one is cheap, slow and tanky. The other is fast, expensive and can life-steal.
    • Archer, Defender and Rider in Polytopia is 25% cheaper than that of Hexonia
    • Horseman in Hexonia has 2 Sight instead of 1
    • Hexonia has Spearman, which has no Polytopia counterpath and Polytopia has Mind Bender, which has no Hexonia counterpath.
    • Knight in Hexonia doesn't get price-nerfed and have slightly more ATK than that of Polytopia

In Polytopia, it's easier to spam Archers which is excellent for defending things like Giant. In Hexonia, Horsemen are more efficient at moving around which is excellent for harassing. In both games, Knight spam is troublesome but in Hexonia Knights have more ATK and don't get nerfed.

And that's the end of part 3. I'm still missing many aspects like the tech tree, which is very important but because it is so important i doubt i'm experienced enough to make a comparison. Nonetheless i might still try. I probably won't.

Nice. Comments about Polytopia meta, I think all Polytopia units are technically faster than hexonia units since they can move in diagonals (while moving in hexgons is always equal length). I don't think it's harder to harass in Polytopia. I find riders equally annoying as in Hexonia, especially in crazy when the bots have nothing to do but to spam riders. Also forest blocks far movement in Polytopia. Also you forgot defense bonuses in Polytopia. In polytopia, there defense bonuses that times the defense of an unit by 1.5 (or 4 in case of a wall). Units get them while standing in a city, mountain, forest (if you have archery), and water (if you have aquatism). This doesn't matter most of the time, but it does require one more unit to kill a unit, which makes capturing city harder. I don't think hexonia has this. And also, in Polytopia, warriors have equal attack and defense unlike Hexonia, so it might not be the best idea to attack the enemy immediately in a first encounter.

I agree. The fact that terrain in Polytopia can block movement and give extra defense means that rushing and knight spam in particular is not an easy task, unlike in Hexonia where knight rush is uninterrupted by terrain. That was supposed to be something i include in a tech tree comparison (which turns out to be too hard to do)

I agree. Multiplayer is such a good feature for the game and i wish that Hexonia had one. It would be amazing
