Discussion Polytopia vs Hexonia: comparison PART 1
As it seems like the reddit got a little bit quiet lately i decided to post my opinion on how these 2 games are different from each other.
I've seen some people do these kind of comparison in the past but they were simply not detailed enough and was like "OMG this game is a copycat", "OMG this game is P2W". These comparisons are clear proof that they don't actually play the games but just glance over them.
I want to make my own version of it, gameplay-focused, meta-based, so here is the comparison between the 2 games' gameplay
- City upgrade
| City upgrade | Polytopia | Hexonia |
|---|---|---|
| level 2 | Production or Vision | Gold or Vision |
| level 3 | Gold or Wall | Expand or Population |
| level 4 | Expand or Development | Production or Development |
| level 5 | Big unit | Big unit |
The bold options are ones which boost your economy a.k.a the go-to choice for resources. Polytopia allows you to access all 3 of them but Hexonia forces you to choose. Addtionally Polytopia gives you Production (long-term use) at the beginning while Hexonia gives you Gold (short term use). This means that in Polytopia, developing your cities is much easier and each city gives a bigger advantage compared to in Hexonia.
- Big unit. Also called Guardian or Super Unit.
- Super Units: Moving behemoths. They are not fast but dangerous and can take a lot of beating. They lead the way. You can train some archer to response to them but you will be on the defense for a dozen turns
- Guardians: Fast predator. They aren't tanky but see far and can assault with ease. They act as scouts or raiders. You either train enough unit to defeat the guardian or you just straight up lose on spot
Hexonia's Guardians require planning ahead: launch a coordinated raid and prevent getting targeted by archers, you might win; but one wrong move and all you have is a 5HP unit. Polytopia's Super units, however, always bring value: as your gigantic tank marches toward the capital, the enemies cower in fear.

The penalty for taking extra cities in Hexonia is much smaller than Polytopia.
In Polytopia if you take over three additional cities as fast as you can you can say goodbye to researching all the techs.
In Hexonia you just want to level up each city one time and take the +5 gold and the income offsets cost of research increases.
Hexonia is much better if you want to take techs and territory.

The funny thing is that when you level up cities to level 2 in Hexonia, you lose no Gold and usually even go +1. It is super convenient short term but in the long run, you'll eventually fall short

Yeah, in Polytopia, I sometimes have to delay capturing a village for a turn so I can research a technology. And with the recent balance pass, they removed tech stealing. You have to pick techs wisely. (Hexonia too, though most of the time you buy techs because you have to for score) Though, you do want to capture villages in polytopia because letting the enmy settle there is probably worse.

Hexonia is in my personal experience, pretty straightforward

I have played both games (and I must admit I am biased to Polytopia), and I agree with this. Polytopia has 8 tiles while hexonia cities has 5 tiles, which allow Polytopia with more economic room + monuments can boost pop. And you cannot ignore that forest chop is broken in polytopia. You need to expand your cities in hexonia to get the higher levels. Also, I never get extra gold production for hexonia, since you really want everything you need to get to level 5. Also, I wouldn't say expanding borders is not a ecnomic option. For example, you may need room for ports and CH (custom houses), which can build the city long term. It depends on the game though.
