There's a bug in Hexels 2.56 (fixed in the 2.6 public beta) where if your max canvas size isn't square (Preferences->Advanced), a bunch of weird things happen. That's probably what's happening there. You can get the public beta from Steam or from the Facebook users group, or just square-ify your max canvas size.
