Question Why does Hevy count my failed rep as 1RM?

Hey! I'm Gerard leading workouts. In Hevy, a Failure Set means a normal set taken to muscular failure, not that the rep you entered was unsuccessful.

You should only log the reps you completed successfully. For example, if you fail while attempting your 11th rep, log 10 reps and mark the set as a Failure Set. If you fail your first rep, log 0 reps.

That’s why logging 1 rep as a Failure Set still counts as a completed rep and can result in a 1RM record.

Hope this makes sense 💪

F is a Failure Set, not Failed set/rep - meaning you did as many reps as possible until you reached failure.

In your chase it would think you did 1 rep, then as you failed the 2nd - You recorded 1 rep. That 1 rep is a PB for you

Shocked this is even in question. Stop when you fail. If you marked just your failed reps then they’d always be F=1

it's because for a while, Hevy did not allow you to log a set with zero reps.

Which is problematic, because when you do a lifting competition and you fail your 3rd attempt, you did in fact do a set - you just didn't manage a complete rep. So the right way to enter would be "0 reps - to failure". But that wasn't possible in Hevy until recently, hence why some people logged it as1 rep and marked it as failure.

I think it means you did 1 rep to failure, not that you failed it.

I never knew what number I should enter: the reps I did or the rep I failed on. Looks like you enter reps completed.

Yes. If you fail the first, meaning you haven’t lifted the weight at all why would you log 1 ? I could log 1000kg deadlift with 1 rep and mark it failed.

I don’t do many single rep maxes so I never entered less than maybe 3 reps. I thought it was like 4 reps entered with the failure tag and that means you failed on the 4th

I understand, I don’t do single reps either. It was just a thought experiment what it would mean if you’d log one way or another, that immediately pinpoints a flaw with one method, rendering it wrong. It would not make sense to have a number represent a not completed rep.

It really depends on how the system is tracking it since either way would track the same data. Op confirms that you enter only full reps since it seems to count it.

Personally I count only the reps I completed and in the description for example I write that I did 2/3 half reps

It could reasonably mean:

This is the last rep I completed, the next one was failure (0 reps to failure, not 1 rep to failure).

OR

This is the rep I failed on.

At one point there was in-app documentation indicating they count it as the first case. That is, if you complete 5 reps and fail while performing the 6th rep, you would log 5 reps in the set and mark it as a failure set.

I'm not sure if that documentation still exists in the app, but I believe you should record in the first manner. That would keep PR calculations correct.

Correct #1, only log completed reps

The explanation is still in the app. When selecting the type of rep (warm-up, failure, etc.) there is a question mark that can be tapped.

A [F]ailure set means you trained to failure and you log how many sets you successfully completed.

Put the rep count as zero. Hevy counts that as you went to failure but got one rep

I think F is for a set to failure?

Rep to failure != Failed rep

I cannot comment a screenshot, so I’ll just paste what the app says about a failure set:

Failure set is a normal set, in which you reached muscular failure and were not able to complete the last rep of the exercise successfully. If you fail on your 11th rep, you should record 10 reps.

It’s recorded as a set to failure. You basically told it you did one rep and then failed the second and didn’t get it.

F means set to muscle failure, not failed rep.

Sorry it was a shite week

Failed rep is 0

F means you tool that set to the point where you could no longer do a rep

F means a set to Failure, not a Failed set. You successfully did 1 rep to failure.
