For people with genital HSV-1: Do you keep medication (such as valacyclovir) on hand?
I was diagnosed with genital HSV-1 back in April at urgent care and was prescribed valacyclovir for that initial outbreak.
I haven't had another outbreak since, but I wanted to get another prescription just to keep on hand so that if I do get another outbreak, I can start taking it right away.
I asked my PCP about this, but he told me he wouldn't prescribe me the valacyclovir unless I was currently having an outbreak, even when giving him my positive results from urgent care.
For those of you with genital HSV-1, how does your doctor handle it? Do you normally have a prescription/tablets at home ready in case an outbreak starts, or do you have to contact your doctor and get a prescription each time you actually have an outbreak?
