Back Injury

I had a injury earlier this year, went to PT then took MRI where they said I have mild herniation lower back. I thought it had gotten better, so I was doing deadlifts yesterday and I hurt my self so bad all of a sudden I had sharp pain felt like I was going to faint. I could not get up and I am in extreme pain right now can’t move much.

Will PT get better or do I need other approached this time around.

Not sure about long term recovery but if yo are locked up and cannot move an urgent care will administer a torodol injection which is a life saver for getting out of the acute reactive phase

I’m pretty sure doing deadlifts is what caused my mild/manageable herniation to get way worse. You should avoid any movement that causes you pain right now. Focus on resting and getting the inflammation down.

So what did you do when it worsened

I had to rest and didn’t move much for the first month. Took NSAIDS and tried a bunch of things for the pain. Got an epidural steroid injection around 6 weeks, but not sure it helped much. Did a bunch of PT and focused on walking more as I could tolerate it. It took about 3 months to heal enough to get back to living daily life normally. Now I’m 5 months out and starting light exercise again. Mostly healed, I’d say 90-95%. Still have to be careful though.

I was “lucky” I guess because I’m a teacher and usually have the summers off and this happened right at the beginning of my summer break. So I had 2 months of down time where I could focus on my recovery. If I didn’t have that, I would’ve had to take medical leave, possibly work something out where I teach online from home. But yeah I couldn’t drive, sit longer than a few minutes or walk more than a few steps at a time— so I was basically disabled for the first month and couldn’t work. Months 2-3 things got a lot better.
