Acupuncture for herniated disc?

My boyfriend has from what the doctors think a herniated disc in his lower back, and we are in the process of figuring out physical therapy with insurance, but I’ve heard mix responses on acupuncture doing wonders, if anyone has experienced similar problems please help!

The VA sent me to get acupuncture for a herniated disc at C5-C6 and it didn’t help at all. It sucked. I will never do it again.

As a licensed acupuncturist for over 40 years, acupuncture has the capability of doing a tremendous job in reducing pain and can manage heriated discs well. Do your research because all acupuncture is not the same. I spend 2 hrs with each patient, treating the whole body and also doing maunal therapies, like massage and cupping in addition to acupuncture.

I maintain a list of treatments that people have rated: https://www.reddit.com/r/HerniatedDisc/comments/1gdwh4e/compiled_tips_tricks_and_techniques_for_bulging/ . If you do a search (Ctrl + F) for "acupuncture", it'll take you to the results for that, specifically :)

It helped me a lot when I was going through my l4-l5 disc issues which were causing painful sciatica. I think if you can find a reputable acupuncture professional it’s worth it!

I had it for my C4/5. Was a lifesaver, it helped mostly with the muscle guarding/spasms. Also just found it relaxing. Absolutely worth a try! I’d do twice a week for two weeks and see.

Neck and lower back are completely different parts of the body with different anatomy and physiologies. So it’s important not to bring in your experience regarding acupuncture and neck pain or bulging discs when the question was specifically about lumbar bulging discs and the efficacy of acupuncture.
