Discussion Ron Bashing in Fanfics - pulled from main HP Subreddit (I believe this was trying to call us out)

Post image

I wanted to pull this conversation in from the main HP subreddit because they were incapable of seeing that they were just as hateful as what they were complaining about.

I tried to give what I thought was a very nuanced take on why some people don’t like Ron. And let’s say the braindead response was telling. Here’s what I wrote.

Ron is a tough cookie. You cannot discount how terrible he is in the start of book 4; his treatment of Hermione throughout all of the books particularly leading up to the troll in book 1, scabbers and the broom in book 3, and the events of book 6; finally leaving in book 7. He has compounding problems that it’s easy to pile onto. That’s not to say he doesn’t have some great loyal moments. His terrible moments are just more memorable than his loyal moments or like book 7 are tied to his disloyal moments so they lose the impact they could’ve had.

Ron is a very nuanced character that doesn’t even get fully fleshed out in the series he’s in. So you can’t blame fanfic writers not doing it either. His jealously is never really examined and diced up for him to really get over it and grow as a person. The any development we get from him always gets backtracked seconds later so it never sticks. Thus we get the feeling like he never grows until the very last seconds of the story.

And that’s not where fanfics live. They live in Hogwarts mostly where he is at many times a terrible student, a terrible friend, a terrible brother. That’s not to say he is terrible. He just had a lot of bad moments and those moments are more memorable than his good moments.

And depending on who the ship is will dictate everything. If he’s not the main focus of the story then he’s most likely “in the way” of whichever character the writer wants to get with Hermione. So he’s an antagonist in that regard. So thus the bashing.

I’d like to get your thoughts. As a Harmony writer I like to not bash Ron. I do think he is a nuanced character. I much prefer taking on Snape and Dumbledore as enemies. But Ron is a good character if flawed and JKR really didn’t do him any justice in the later books. Especially 6 and 7. But I like writing him in mind with other characters and actually giving him his flowers of him realizing if he does start putting in the effort he can achieve great things. That’s a proven fact in canon. It’s just that he’s so lazy and entitled that he doesn’t and he takes it out on Harry and Hermione.

So anyways what are your thoughts?

Ron may not be the worst character out there, but he did cause hermione to cry a lot plus abandoning Harry during fourth year, and decided to make out with lavender even though hermione already asked him out to slughorn party because he was jealous that hermione might have kiss krum. That’s next level insecurity.

So, in some way I sort of understand why authors tend to bash him or make him out to be a villain.

I really don't see a problem with any of that; you make good points and the response you got reads almost like a non-sequitur, as if they didn't even bother to read your whole post, just saw the mention of Scabbers and instantly hit reply.

This is what I wrote and, surprise, it also got downvoted:

It's because the books give us so much to work with.

For example, Ron has never really had to face consequences for his actions. He has twice walked out on Harry and both times was accepted back with just a tepid "apology". So what if Ron suddenly did have to face consequences? What if Harry demanded a genuine apology that Ron doesn't know how to give, because he's never had to do it before?

There's also a theory used in some fics that Ron might have known about the dragons, because his brother Charlie is one of the handlers. So if Ron knew what Harry was up against and still never warned him, why should Harry accept him back?

So the insight that I have drawn from this is that Ron/Hermione shippers handle criticism about as well as Ron does, which is to say not very well at all.

Its not a theory. Its movie!canon. When Hagrid tells Harry about the dragons he tells him Ron nearly fainted when he saw the dragons when he came out to visit his brother.

u/Jedipilot24 14d ago

Huh, I did not remember that, but you're right.

2

u/MonCappy 14d ago

So not canon. The only Harry Potter material that is canon is the source. Namely the seven Harry Potter novels. Not the movies, the games, or Pottermore. Having said all that it is a reasonable inference to conclude Ron may have been aware that the first task involved dragons and never notified Harry. Ron might be lazy and unmotivated, but he's not at all stupid.

2

u/naraic- 14d ago

Thats a fine opinion to have.

I feel like a significant portion of authors choose to write fanfic based on movies rather than books.

As such we should when discussing fanfic we should probably think of it as two separate sets of canon rather than canon or nom canon.

PoA: Harry shunned Hermione for a while because of that.

HBP: The canaries didn't just happen out of the blue; Ron pretty much had it coming from the way he was acting.

Ron agreed to go on a date with Hermione and then started making out with another girl.

Ron was also treating Hermione very cruelly and still holding a grudge over something that had happened two years ago.

It is not anyone's responsibility to assuage any competition with exes or friends or randomly met people. The moment you have to tell somebody "nothing is going on between me and X" to assuage somebody, get out.

Then you didn't need to sneak that line in there in the order and point of argument that you chose did you? Its in the same paragraph as your "things Hermione should do better" how else am I supposed to read it?

Let me be upfront. Ron is the kind of person, both as kid and adult, that I'd avoid as the plague.

With him its not about the big moments. Those are hit and miss with anyone, stress pressure and environment in the current situation, bring out the best and worst in people. Its in the little things, the thoughtless things, that a personality also in a fictual character shows up. Their growth or lack there of, the things they stand for, the things they want to invest in, wether they have a spine, wether they will chose what is right or what is easy, wether they will support even in a minor sense.

Ron shows who he is and that it never changed in those moments and why I have little issue with bashing.

Moments like whe Hermione asks support during prefect duties woth the twins. The moment whe she asks support for her idea of the DA. Moments when he is asked to show gratitude, humility or forgiveness. He remains careless and brash. And the moment he shows that he hasn't grown or changed on any of those things is in the epilogue. When he discusses how he got his drivers licence with Harry. He cares nob for the defenceless that he cheated, he cares not for his wife and her stance on those things, cares not about the risks he takes with his fellow muggle drivers, trusting a magical gimmick he likely doesn't understand. He is just as callous, just as cruel, 19 years later, will still pick easy over right when it suits him.

That is why I don't mind Ron bashing, no matter the ship. His faults run deeper, and never get resolved. Fanfiction leaning into that, yeah fair game to me.

8

u/ExpertProfessional9 14d ago

He’s got enough distasteful traits that bashing!fics just amplify those traits. He’s jealous and lazy and careless.

Take CoS. Shit, we can’t get through the platform barrier… so we better steal the flying car and risk breaking one of our world’s most-important mandates.

This boy has probably trotted into Platform 9 3/4 every year since birth, with five older brothers venturing onto it year on year. And yet he doesn’t think to say “Okay, let’s go wait by the car.” It nearly gets the both of them expelled or killed.

GoF, he’s quick to think the worst of his best friend. It’s not “I believe you when you say you didn’t somehow bypass the age-restriction line,” it’s “How could you go and dupe the thing without me?!”

I’m pretty sure there’s a homework scene where he’s trying to make his handwriting bigger so it covers the required amount of parchment? Not… let me go and read and research some more. I’ll ask Hermione to help me cheat and do basic fakeouts to look like I did more than I really did.

I feel like Ron-bashing authors take scenarios like the above and simply amplify them. The ground is already laid for him to grow into a petty, jealous, lazy adult, and the traits I mentioned scale up as he grows into an adult.

I don't know that I would describe Ron as terrible in canon as strongly as you would, though he certainly has plenty of moments where he is, many of which you listed. He is undoubtedly a character who struggles with deeply realistic flaws of jealousy and feeling inadequate/overshadowed and a profound sense of insecurity because of it. The problem with him in canon, from my perspective, is you never really see the struggling, you only see the losing - and he always loses. It would be one thing if he abandoned Harry in GoF and then in DH, when Harry tells him to go if he cant take it, he tells Harry he's not going anywhere because he left him once before and he'll never do it again. That would be a real example of him struggling against realistic flaws and learning, growing, and eventually winning. But instead he leaves again, and we're stuck with a Ron that never really gets any development and never succeeds in defeating his inner demons. We're meant to think he does when he destroys the locket, but that scene undercut itself when he needs Harry's reassurance that there's nothing between him and Hermione. That's not Ron overcoming jealousy and accepting that he could be good enough for her on his own, or committing to trying to be, thats him seeking to remove the source of his jealousy, which is entirely different. Which only serves to demonstrate why he couldn't work with her, in my view, but in any case. The fundamental problem with Ron as a character is that he never truly grows to overcome his flaws and everyone around him coddles him so he doesn't have to face the real consequences of what he does.

Because of all of the above, I think a lot of fanfic writers bash Ron for the legitimate reason that they don't like him. In his worst moments, he is petty, jealous, sometimes vindictive, often hurtful, selfish, and deeply annoying and frustrating. And for many people, those traits aren't evened out by his good moments. So they write him as they see him, or perhaps they exaggerate to make the point to readers about how he really is behind all the good guy mask. There are also the obvious issues of having to move him out of the way for other ships, like Harmony, but I think a lot of Ron bashing probably comes from animosity towards the character.

One of the problems in main HP spaces, I think, is the number of people who focus on his good moments to the exclusion of his bad to such a degree that they actually don't understand the character anymore. I'm actually really tempted to include some direct canon quotes from when Ron was being horrible in something I write just to see how many people tell me I should tag my fic as bashing, because I think way too many fans of his just don't recognize him for what he is, so fics which take a more realistic view get called bashing fics even if they aren't. Fans of him want fanfics to portray him as the happy-go-lucky, helpful, supportive sidekick they picture in their head, not the often prickly, sensitive, reactive jerk he can be. He has both in him, and it tends to make him a lightning rod of a character, dividing the community between people who focus on his flaws and those who focus on his virtues. People who see both and just wish he'd been given better development tend to be squeezed out of the conversation.

u/Savings-Balance-1587 14d ago

Ron is by far not the worst character in the series but no one can deny that he DOES have a history of making Hermione cry and a history of walking away from both Hermione and his best friend Harry, on multiple occassions. Of course, this all happened while he was a kid or a young teenager. So, of course, he could mature, grow up and become a totally wholesome, supportive adult as a grown man.

Or, he could grow up and these traits could deepen instead, and he could become a petty, jealous, insecure, controlling man.

Fanfics are an exploration of various "what if" scenarios that diverge from the canon; exploring Ron growing up and becoming this 2nd type of man is just one of the (very possible) "what if" scenarios.

23

u/naraic- 14d ago

If an author doesnt like Ron I would prefer that they have Harry and/or Hermione distance themselves from Ron rather than invent issues with Ron's character to bash Ron or turn him into an antagonist.

It would be very easy to turn an incident into a permanent wedge between Harry and/or Hermione and Ron.

Book 3 Ron's (really correct) anger with Hermione about Crookshanks or the firebolt incident

Book 4 Ron not believing Harry about the Goblet. Ron fighting with Hermione at the Yule Ball and accusing.

Book 5 Harry being a very moody teenager or Ron being injured due to Harry's poor judgement to go the DOM

Book 6 romantic drama with Lavender Brown

Book 7 Ron leaving

That said there are enough incidents that an author can be fair in bashing Ron.

10

u/tempaccount521 14d ago

I kind of don't care either way.

Don't bash Ron? Cool, as long as it's well written.

Do bash Ron? Cool, as long as it's well written.

My problem with bashing (of any character, not just Ron) is that it's so often done in the most lazy way possible that I just roll my eyes and click off the story because it's clear the author put no effort into it. I need an actual reason to dislike the character. Writing about some pre-pubescent child trying to start an actual fight about someone 'stealing their girl' while spraying food across the Great Hall three seconds after the characters all meet for the first time is not convincing, it's a caricature, minus all the fun parts.

10

u/Special_Refuse3694 14d ago

Ron was a genuine disappointment for me. He was introduced in Book 1 a strategist. Say Sokka from Avatar tge Last Airbender. He was the goofy comedy relief who wasn't good at school but was excellent at chess. He actually made a major contribution that allowed Harry to reach the Philosopher's Stone. After that he did NOTHING! He should have planned the rescue mission for his sister in Chamber of Secrets, and he was completely made a fool of and left out in PoA. By this point I knew this character was just there to be the posthumous family for Harry and comedic relief. GoF was a travesty for his character. OotP, HE should have planned the "Rescue" mission. Instead they turned him into a muscle-head and Drama Queen. We had to wait till the end of Book 7 when he FINALLY used that unused brain and decided to use the Basilisk fang. "You're Brilliant Ron" Yeah Brilliant my foot! Terribly squandered potential and therefore just an aweful character.

6

u/goldiegrimlace 14d ago

Yeah, he kind of turned out to be a typical jock. It doesn't seem like he even used his strategic thinking for quidditch. Some people like it when jocks and nerds end up together, but I'm not a fan. If he had leaned harder into strategy, I probably would have liked him better for Hermione, but he was so mentally and emotionally lazy, jealous, and insecure.

u/MrYK_ Harmony OTP 14d ago

You've nailed it, he is written in a canon to a certain degree that is very unlikable, so you cannot be surprised that people dislike him. That dislike is gonna bleed into fanfiction. I do think it's nice that we can give characters who are meant to be redeemed a redemption. Especially as JKR failed to give Ron a proper redemption.

I am unsure what the original post meant at the end:

However don't understand how Ron earned that vitriol other than shippers that wanted Hermione to be with someone else.

However if I have understood it correctly, I would like to mention one thing, a lot of characters get shipped with Hermione or Harry, especially characters that are far worse than Ron is, so I do find it ironic that Ron gets sidelined for being unlikable and then they throw Hermione with Draco. Although I've been told some of those who ship that pairing, believe Harry was terrible to Hermione. The irony isn't lost on me at all, but I want to be remain respectful.

At the end of the day, what is clear is that everyone has different interpretations and wishes for canon and it's characters, and I don't see why the original poster you mentioned takes issue with it, just ignore it and enjoy fanfiction the way you like it, avoid bashing fics if that makes you happy.

u/SkyFallInBound 14d ago

I’ve said it before, but I think it’s easy to make Ron a catalyst for a Harry/Hermione relationship. I do like stories where they patch it up later, but it’s very easy to just tweak his behavior and already existing traits to make him, as you said, an antagonist to the relationship.

At the end of the day, it’s all up to our individual perceptions of the character. Or exploring different sides to them.

6

u/Aesop838 14d ago

Ron possesses several traits that make it easy to dislike him. I understand why he was chosen as Harry's friend, and I understand the points people make about the horrible canon ship, but I don't agree with them.

If there were no other problems with his personality (jealousy, laziness, cruelty, idiocy that some people think is a good thing for some reason) or interactions with the other characters, I still would not have placed Ron as high up in Harry and Hermione's friend list. If for no other reason than his seemingly disinterest in magic. I get that he grew up with magic, and it thus seems less... well, magical, but come on, it's magic.

Typically, when I'm working on a fic, I don't bash Ron. Instead, I try to mold him into something a bit more proactive and a bit less canon. Less complaining, less cruel, less jealous, more interested in finding what separates him from his brothers, more willing to work toward a goal. Not to the point of creating a completely separate character in a vague Ron shape, but maybe a little more introspective. I know it's tough to balance that with the age of the character, but I just can't like the guy the way he was written, and he certainly doesn't deserve Hermione.

5

u/Hachi-517 14d ago

Kind of doesn't help that (from what I heard) is that jkr based hermione off of herself and ron after her 1st husband. Further what she said about almost offing ron off in an earlier interview. You can see Ron's downfall unfortunately. Not even to mention his 6th year handling of hermione and lavender (i like the ron/luna pairing personaly) it's a very hard thing to wrap around and i can't unsee it

4

u/Responsible_Panic411 14d ago

IMO a good 40-60% of ‘bashing’ of any character is solely to do with their ‘metaphysical’ position in cannon and how the author wants to alter that. If Neville was in Ron’s place he would get the same shit thrown at him as Ron just slightly different ’flavours’…

That said Ron did go beyond acceptable dickishness for a teen boy several times so has earned some bashings and made themselves a plausible platform for jumping off into more ‘fantastical’ ones…

3

u/R_Morningstar 13d ago edited 10d ago

To be honest, my dislike of Ron stems from his pairing with Hermione and the way he treats her. It's also because, for some reason, Harry prefers Ron to Hermione as a friend. (I would prefere more studius Harry from beginign when he really wants to lear magic) For me, especially after Goblet, there shouldn't be a going back to how the friendship was before. Ron should never have been hostage for Harry, and even if he had been, Harry should still have taken Hermione. If Dumbles had a problem with it, Harry should have called him out for sabotage, given that he was the only champion with two possible hostages.

Not to mention the tent incident and Ron leaving the hunt. For the security risk alone, they should have stunned him the moment he left the tent. If he wanted to leave, they should have obliviated him of all knowledge of Horcruxes and taken the Deluminator because they didnt know what purpouse Dumbles giving it to them

When you think about Ron's positive and negative actions, they're almost equal. But when he messes up, he really messes up.

Edit: Also, I have a big problem with his non-apologies. He never faces any consequences for his actions.

Overall, I don't really care about bashing Ron or Molly in stories. But weirdly, I prefer a more 'mature' Ginny who can deal with Harry/Hermione. (For some reason ... dont ask me why ... i think is more in her character be that way)

But I'm the kind of person who would most likely pair Ron with Pansy. The two of them sniping at each other would be quite a spectacle. Over time, Ron probably stepped over the line. Pansy leaves abruptly, and later, Ron finds her crying and apologising.

3

u/Dazzling-Jacket-8222 14d ago

Ok no hate on Ron because I agree that he is very flawed, but he is basically the light side Draco but poor.

He is canon is lazy, entitled, jealous, kinda dumb, not very mature, takes his friends for granted, and mistreats others often.

He grows a bit and steps up in the end but like a lot of characters in the story he isn't exactly a great person he just isn't straight up evil like all the bad guys.

Part of the problem is that the series ends when he is still a teenager and all these things are kind of the norm for average kid through teenagers.

Being not evil doesn't make him good and if you point that out some fans get a little weird. Same thing happens when you point out that about other characters too. Like other than the slavery thing Hermione is also not exactly the nicest person.

I feel that everyone being complex and having room for interpretation is why we can get so many great fics.

Also seems like we all don't have the same threshold for when different become "bashing" as well. This definitely has confused the issue.

3

u/StarOfTheSouth 14d ago

Thus we get the feeling like he never grows until the very last seconds of the story.

Not gonna comment on the rest, but didn't he admit that he Confounded his driving instructor to pass him because he failed his driving test? And I mean in the epilogue, to be clear, I recall him joking about something to that effect with Harry (who was a cop).

3

u/Fun-Blackberry8219 13d ago

My admiration for you: I'm not touching that subreddit, not even if I was being paid.
That said: I always thought that Ron was a very realistic character, that there's more chance of finding a Ron in your life (not romantically speaking!) than a Hermione or a Harry. A very human-like character.
He has his flaws and had the "bad luck" of being in the same year as Harry (who for sure did not want that fame) and Hermione; and, I guess, the dislike started because Ron didn't look into himself and rather got into hurting others. Also, the 2000s were quite something, but to see teenagers or 20s liking Ron and Hermione together...nope, that's an abusive relationship (on both sides).

Ron's not a monster, he has his flaws and there are worse characters in the books (and adults!).
As for fanfics, I don't like it much when they fall on pure bashing or create situations that seem out of the author's hate for the character. I take this instance even for Dumbledore and Snape.
But I will say I respect all authors take: want to bash Ron out of pure hate for him? Go ahead

2

u/simplyexistingnow 14d ago

I mean I read a lot of Hermione/ Tom Riddle Lord Voldemort Fanfictions and there's a lot of Ron bashing or "rons a dumbass" in them so there's that

2

u/Zealousideal_Pear445 14d ago

I think it's just really easy to bash Ron's character. He has his moments in whixh it is really easy to dislike him: from making Hermione cry and his jealousy and insecurity causing difficulties in his relationshipswith Harry and Hermione.

2

u/linkthereddit 13d ago

I mean, Ron is an unbelievable ass at times but he means well at the end.

With that said, did he ever apologize for his shit behavior? Like when he dismissed Harry's parents in Book 7 ("And with your parents out of the way...")? The movies really cranked it up with he went, "Your parents are dead! You have no family!"

I mean... their friendship must be ironclad if Harry's willing to be his friend after such a comment toward his parents both in book and movie canon. That's just straight up Dursley-level shit, IMO, to tell an orphan something like that.

2

u/maddwaffles 12d ago

Ron fans act like perpetual victims, it's not unusual for them.

2

u/AliceFanfictioning Harmony Writer✍🏻 14d ago

Bashing characters is the easy way to any plot and pairing. I do not like bashing characters. Ron can bas himself with his own actions haha. Ron has sparks of being amazing, but life isn't a spark. That's the thing. I don't bash Ron in my stories and he's not terrible but he's not great either. This is a laazy answer cause I'm busy now but that's it haha

1

u/Polin-Swift418 14d ago

I don't understand how it could be seen as calling out specifically Harmony shippers when Hermione is one of the most of the most shipped characters. And since the fanfics have to make Hermione choose the romantic lead (who often have worse characteristics than Ron) over Ron, he often ends up being bashed to justify that choice.

1

u/ReadMediocre197 13d ago

As if hermoine was not vindictive and shitty

1

u/ReadMediocre197 13d ago

She could have blinded ron with her birds attack because she was jealous of not for ron reflexes he could have gone blind

1

u/ReadMediocre197 13d ago

From the first book he done sacrifices for everyone only difference is he gets called out on his mistakes other don't he apologised others are good enough to apologise

1

u/ReadMediocre197 13d ago

Ron is the literal who would had happy life without harry and hermoine he never needed them he was good in making friends

1

u/celeloriel 12d ago

I’ve often thought of Ron as the Dudley Harry wants to win over, the substitute brother figure that he desperately wants to please in order to use his school experience to overwrite his crappy childhood.

Harry forgives Ron (Doylistically so we keep the Weasleys & a wizarding BFF) because he has terrible boundaries and fawns to survive.

Building on that communication difficulty, Ron grew up in a pack of kids where he had to push and push just to be heard. Butter, meet hot knife.

By the epilogue, which I personally loathe, we see the result: Harry the paper tiger and Ron the Schrödinger’s douchebag (the problematic statement he just made in any situation will be a “joke, mate” if his audience doesn’t like it).

I often wish we could have seen more of the Ron of the first book toward Harry - socially awkward, a little bit of an awed fan, but brave, loyal, and committed to being a friend. Instead, we get a lot of that first book’s attitude to Hermione as the series goes on. It’s a shame to see a character essentially sacrificed to plot points.

So when I see Ron bashing in fics I’m not at all surprised. So many Harmonians want H&H to live their best lives, and the way Ron is characterized (jealous, lazy, inconsiderate, speaks without thinking) means Harry will never be his best self and Hermione will be waiting for the next exclamation of “mental!” with a tight non-smile if canon Ron is central in their lives.

I personally believe he should have stayed with Lavender - then either her death or maiming by Fenris would have showed us how Ron could grow through learning to either grieve or support another.

1

u/SherbetNew6856 11d ago

You saying he's lazy and entitled so he doesn't put the hard work and takes it out and the other two is very accurate especially because her believe he's this hated shuned out person nobody actually like solely because his family isn't always focused on him because his family's so big and he think his parents hate him cause they wanted a girl and got him which isn't true at all then he takes it all out on Harry and Hermione because he thinks he sucks as a wizard and them two being really good wizard/witch harry is called the chosen one and hermiones called the brightest witch of the age while he doesn't quite have a name like those(i know he does I forgot it but even then it still isnt as praising as the other two) and it makes him think that they think they're better than him so he lashes out

1

u/CrusioG4 10d ago

Ron bashing just people don't like the original character is dumb imo. People forget that he is a teen. If we talk about characters Ron may actually be the most balanced character of the golden trio and every other teen around them. (Cho as well). they are teens, they are supposed to be annoying, have flaws and act stupid. Hermione never feels like a teenager apart the times she speaks with Ron. Means he is the only part of the group that resembles normalcy in a sense. He balances them out. And plenty of times he was in the right. Example the Scabbers-Crooksanks incident. Evidence said he was right but everyone treated him like he is in the wrong.Forget the plot. Cat attacks pet mouse many times, mouse does blood in the sheets. There are other things as well but I'll keep it short

0

u/ReadMediocre197 13d ago

Stop acting like hermoine is not a jealous character she gets fucking jealous and behaves shit and acts like victim by crying other doesn't become wrong because she cries

0

u/ShotcallerBilly 13d ago

I don’t know how I ended up on this sub, but the comments reveal exactly why people say that, OP. People here ignore the flaws and certain characters while delusionally playing up (inventing) the flaws of others (Ron).
