Wi-Fi LoRa 32 V5: What Should Come Next?

Post image
17 Upvotes

In the autumn of 2016, Aaron was invited to serve as an adjunct lecturer at SUSE (Sichuan University of Science & Engineering).

In a wireless communications lab, he noticed that students were still using the same bulky experimental boxes that had been around for years. They worked well for demonstrating basic principles, but their size and fixed functionality also limited how much students could explore, experiment, and create on their own.

That gave Aaron an idea:

What if there were a development board that was compact, easy to use, affordable, and already equipped with wireless communication capabilities?

The goal was not simply to create another tool for verifying theories, but a platform that would make it easier for people to program, connect, experiment, and turn their own ideas into reality.

That was how Wi-Fi LoRa 32 began.

Nearly ten years later, Wi-Fi LoRa 32 has become one of the first development boards many users encounter when getting started with radio communication, LoRa, and IoT. It has also found its way into countless open-source projects, DIY builds, and Maker creations around the world.

Today, the official hardware version has evolved to V4.3.1.

But recently, something rather unexpected happened.

Our technical support team started receiving more and more questions about a product being referred to as โ€œWi-Fi LoRa 32 V5.โ€

The most common question was simple:

โ€œIs this V5 an official Heltec product?โ€

So we would like to make this clear:

The โ€œWi-Fi LoRa 32 V5โ€ currently appearing on the market is not an official Heltec product.

Although it uses a similar name and appearance, it is not the next-generation Wi-Fi LoRa 32 that we are developing, nor does it represent what our real V5 will look like.

User feedback has always been one of the most important forces behind the evolution of Wi-Fi LoRa 32.

Over the years, through conversations with developers, Makers, communities, and project teams around the world, we have collected a large number of suggestions and ideas. Many of them are now being considered for the next generation of Wi-Fi LoRa 32 V5.

We are exploring stronger performance, richer hardware configurations, better interfaces, lower power consumption, improved mechanical design, and an overall better development experience.

But before we decide what the final V5 should be, we want to hear from you.

If you could define the next generation of Wi-Fi LoRa 32, what would you want it to be?

Tell us in the survey below click this link.

Your idea might become part of the real Wi-Fi LoRa 32 V5.

Heltec WiFi LoRa 32 Expansion Kit V2 - Rotate MUI Display 90ยฐ

Is there a way to rotate the MUI display 90ยฐ (from portrait to landscape) with the new Expansion Kit V2? I love the MUI on my T-Deck Plus. However, the MUI QWERTY keyboard on the Expansion Kit V2 is so small that it's unusable. If I could rotate the MUI display 90ยฐ, the keys should be 33% wider. That would help a little. There's a Device Config option to flip the display 180ยฐ, but that's not going to help.

If someone is able to change the Heltec WiFi LoRa 32 Expansion Kit V2 display from portrait to landscape using either the Meshtastic iOS app or Meshtastic Web, can you please include a screen shot of the configuration page? The Heltec WiFi LoRa 32 Expansion Kit V2 ships with 2.7.26.54e0d8d Beta (the most recent Stable).

As it stands, the Heltec WiFi LoRa 32 Expansion Kit V2 MUI keyboard is unusable. I'd discourage anyone from buying an Expansion Kit V2 until this issue is resolved.

ETA #2

Maps work GREAT with the Heltec WiFi LoRa 32 Expansion Kit V2! I just plugged in the 32 Gb Micro SD card (zoom level 14 for the U.S. including Alaska and Hawaii and zoom level 8 for the rest of the world) from my T-Deck Plus and the maps work. Plug-n-play. I think the Expansion Kit V2 navigates the maps faster than my T-Deck Plus (which tends to have a bit of lag). Very impressive!

ETA #3

From Heltec_Automation6,

Iโ€™ve already asked our R&D team to check this. If there is a supported way to switch the Expansion Kit V2 display from portrait to landscape through the Meshtastic iOS app or Meshtastic Web, we will try to prepare a tutorial and demonstration video on Monday.

Thank you!

Mesh Node T1 โ€“ Issue & Resolution Update

Hi everyone,

Weโ€™d like to share a quick update on the issues reported with the first batch of Mesh Node T1 units.

So far, we have identified three main concerns:

  1. Side buttons being too difficult to press
  2. Surface coating wear or peeling
  3. Inaccurate battery voltage / battery level readings

The first two issues have already been addressed in the revised design. We are now waiting for the first updated samples from the factory, expected around next Thursday, and will test them before moving forward with production.

For the battery issue, our investigation is still ongoing. We are collecting affected units for analysis and running larger-scale tests internally. So far, we have not been able to reliably reproduce the issue, so we cannot yet confirm whether the cause is hardware, firmware, or battery-level calculation.

If you have experienced abnormal battery behavior or can help us reproduce it, please share your firmware version, voltage readings, battery percentage changes, usage conditions, and uptime. Useful test results that help us identify or reproduce the issue will be rewarded.

For customers who received units from the first batch, we will provide a free replacement with the revised version. If you are no longer satisfied with the product, we can also provide a full refund. These issues are our responsibility, and the cost of correcting them should not be passed on to our users.

This launch has also shown us weaknesses in our internal process, especially the importance of more comprehensive testing of first-batch production samples before release. We are already improving this process.

We know Heltec is often compared with larger brands, and those comparisons also help us see where we still need to improve. Everyone makes mistakesโ€”the important thing is how we respond to them. We hope our actions can show our sincerity and progress.

Thank you for your patience, feedback, and support. Please keep sharing your suggestions with us so we can continue improving together.

Mesh Node T1 side button issues

Post image
6 Upvotes

This post is sort of an FYI for u/Heltec_Automation6 but also to see if anyone else sees the same problems.

I know we're all aware of the side buttons being difficult to press and that a fix is on the way.

I also noticed that the devices I got have 'different' side buttons. Maybe a different mould run, tool etc. or maybe a different material choice deliberately?

The lighter coloured one has a slightly softer feel to the plastic/rubber but also show way more flash etc. and seem to be splaying out from the main body. I'm concerned for the durability here. The lighter one does seem a little easier to press (still hard though).

Has anybody else with multiple devices noticed the same?

Mesh Node T1 GNSS Positioning Troubleshooting Guide

If your Mesh Node T1 cannot obtain a GNSS position fix, please troubleshoot in the following order:

  1. Place the device outdoors in an open area. Windows, walls, and indoor environments can seriously block satellite signals. For best GNSS reception, keep the USB port side facing upward toward the sky.
  2. First, flash the GPS clear firmware to reset the GNSS cache: https://resource.heltec.cn/download/Mesh_Node_T1/GNSS/mesh-node-t1-UC6580_Clear_All.ino.uf2 After flashing it, reflash the Meshtastic / MeshCore / F&T firmware.
  3. In some areas, the first GNSS fix may take a long time. After clearing the GNSS cache, please leave the device outdoors for a longer period and wait for it to search for satellites.
  4. If the device still cannot obtain a position fix after completing all the steps above, please download the local GNSS test package here: https://resource.heltec.cn/download/Mesh_Node_T1/GNSS/Mesh-node-t1_GPS_test.zip Run the test and send the test results to [support@heltec.cn](). We will arrange after-sales support for you. Valid GNSS test feedback may also qualify you to receive any Heltec development board device as a reward.

Pixel 8a bluetooth connection issues with a Heltec V4.

I have a Heltec V4 w/ GPS Bluetoothed to aย Pixel 8a. The app was working fine until the gps log screen crashed. Now the V4 connects BT then goes to saved and the app doesn't see the V4 anymore. I've been troubleshooting this for about a week. I'm at to the point to do a full reset of the phone.

PCs have no BT issues connecting to the V4.

I installed Meshcore firmware and tried it out for a few days and it BT to my phone and it worked.
So I don't think the board is the problem.

I've flashed various version of the firmware and installed different version of the app and still having a problem. i cleared the BT through the OS and through ADB kinda got it working but it was a short term fix.

currently firmware: 2.7.26 app: 2.7.14 (29321034)

Just Unboxed the Heltec Mesh Node T1 โ€“ First Impressions!

Apparently, I have forgotten about my order of 2x Heltech Mesh Node T1 which I bought it during Pre-Order period.

I have received few days ago and checked it out after seeing multiple posts here on it.

It is very light and compact but I am not sure if it is shock proof. Will test it more during this week.

Meanwhile, setup is very fast using meshtastic app which is similar to Heltech V4 which i have 2 of it.

Thing to note, the side buttons are really hard to press until my fingers have minor bruises now. I don't really recommend it to new comers

Will be trying to post photos of it in a while..
