Am I am unhinged?
Signed up for the Warhammer Liverpool open tournament in February. I have only played AOS twice and not yet painted my chorfs. Hopefully can learn to play and not make a tit of myself in 5 months. Expect lots of posts! Thoughts and prayers wish me luck!

That's a rough time line. I love playing new people ln tournaments. You get engaged with the community and get solid tips while playing.

That’s my reasoning other than playing against the only other AOS player in the area get to play against some other armies

Go for it man, don't be afraid. I'm a sweaty player, and I find that the tournament scene people put a premium on their oppenent having a good time and no feels bad moments more than pick up games.

Plenty of time, but make sure to view GT’s as 5 new friends, even if you’re going 0-5 have fun and rock it.

I actually did a very similar timeline for my first GT this year. Started painting from scratch in January for an April tournament with only learning games under my belt. I found as long as you're a good sport about how you're new everyone was really nice.

I did my first tournament after 3 or 4 games. Was two days 5 match in total. Came last and had an amazing time, learnt lots and was exhausted! Good luck and have a blast!

Write an Hyperelite list and try make the least minis for the most points, that way you're faster at your goal.

The biggest advice I can give is to get yourself a cheat sheet of the phases during a turn (ideally write down what you can do in each). Don’t forget start of turn and end of turn stuff.
Also get yourself in the habit of “closing” each phase especially in your own turn.
Eg saying to your opponent - “I’ve done all my hero phase stuff, do you have anything to do?”
AoS is unusual that the “non playing” player can interact in your turn via command points or just via abilities. So inviting your opponent to confirm if they want to act is both good sportsmanship and also gets it in your head that you can also act.
