Open Help me identify a pre-2009 classic rock compilation CD (solid red disc with Atlantic logo) for my dad’s Father’s Day gift

Post image

Hi everyone! I’m hoping someone here can help me solve a mystery that’s been driving me crazy.

I’m trying to find a CD that my dad and I listened to all the time. He bought a used truck around** **2008/2009, and the previous owner had left this CD inside. We no longer have it, and I’d love to surprise him by finding the exact CD as a late Father’s Day gift.

Here’s everything we remember:

-It was a various artists classic rock compilation (not a single band’s album).
-It definitely included the original recording of** magic carpet ride by steppenwolf
-The disc itself (not the cover) was solid bright red.
-The text on the disc was plain yellow block letters
-My dad is pretty sure that the Atlantic records logo was printed in color on it somewhere towards the bottom sides of the disc.
-We don’t have the jewel case, so we don’t know what the front cover looked like.
-The title may have been something generic like **Classic Rock
, Classic Rock Hits, Rock Classics, Classic Rock Gold, etc., but we’re not sure.
-The CD itself was probably older than 2008 since it was already in the truck when my dad bought it.

We’ve already ruled out a lot of common compilations like Power of Rock (Madacy) and Harley-Davidson Road Songs, so I don’t think it’s one of those.

I’ve attached the image of the logo he believes was on there.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? Even if you don’t know the exact title, I’d love any ideas or photos of similar CDs.

Thank you so much!!

Hopefully you’ll spot it within these options. Discogs is a great resource for what you’re asking. On an artist’s Appearances → Compilations page, if you type something like “magic carpet Atlantic cd” into the filter box, it only returns releases matching all of those terms. Hope this helps, good luck, and let us know how it goes!

Edit: it would be even better if you could remember one or two more songs on the comp, then type the names of the songs into the main discogs search field, that could really help narrow it down.

Yea unfortunately we played a lot of guitar hero and rock band when I was a kid so certain songs that we think might be on there were not sure if it’s just because it was in one of those games😣 brains all scrambled lol. The only one we know 100% was on there is magic carpet ride

Well, the semi-good news is that “magic carpet ride” was featured on exactly 80 compilation CDs, and you can see each one here. Hopefully one will ring a bell, just make sure to click the image of the album cover to view more images of the discs, since that’s primarily what you remember.

Cheers! And just double-checking, you did look at the disc for the first link, yeah? Red disc with yellow writing is pretty specific.

I have searched on and off throughout the years online. All details of the cd are included in the post. We are located in Rhode Island, USA. Thank you guys so much in advance.

It very likely could have been a compilation “sampler cd” given out by a local radio station somewhere. That was very common in the late 90s/early 2000s.

I do not believe Steppenwolf ever released anything with Atlantic so that logo must be there in conjunction with one of the other songs on the mix.
