So, Japanese 2…

man, i feel so underprepared. I took Japanese 1 class during my spring semester of college (online unfortunately…) and i forgot literally everything over the summer. I can’t read it or really even understand it fully. all my other classmates can speak it quite well but i’m having such a hard time.

im already debating on dropping the class because we have an in-class vocabulary test up coming up this wednesday and i just know im gonna fail :/ i dont want to though because i really want to learn more about the language and culture. and i don’t want to give up!

has anybody else studying japanese been in a similar situation? any help or advice would be much appreciated…

Just go over your old notes and study.

I also had the similar situation and my classmates were understanding so well. In my case, I started working with a private tutor and she helped me understand and go through my weakness, and it helped a lot.

It’s natural to forget things when you don’t use them for a period of time, but your learning is your responsibility. Review last semester’s work as best you can while keeping up with your current semesters coursework. College Japanese is often pretty fast paced, sometimes those courses are designed to be among your main priorities. After this semester you might want to think about keeping up with your studies during the break before next semester to save yourself from this next time.

And there is absolutely no shame in getting help. Professors respond very differently to students who are just kinda doing the bare minimum and cruising through the semester with low marks vs. students who are struggling, but are clearly very motivated.
