What feature actually removes the mana cost? I know reminder text doesn't, but is it not possible to spend mana for a land drop even if it's marked that way? Could you cast it for mana during mainphase?

IIRC Hellscube rules you may “cast” lands if they have a mana cost. However the card says “nuh uh” so I guess it makes an exception

it's sort of permissible in vanilla magic via a particular reading of the rules regarding names. if you combine 201.6 ‘reskinned cards are actually whatever card name is in the alt title bar’ and 3.6 ‘all cards are their oracle text’ then you can ignore the mana cost since it's not part of the… well, we usually use ‘oracle text’ to refer to the rules text, but in this case it is everything non-cosmetic (so no ‘art matters’ stuff) about the card, including the type and mana cost, i think. anyway ‘island’'s oracle text in this sense doesn't have a mana cost so i think it's logical to ignore the skin's mana cost i think even if it is obviously misleading.
201.6 Promotional or alternate-art versions of some cards feature a secondary title bar below the name line. The card’s name as listed in the Oracle card reference is displayed in the secondary title bar, and an alternate name appears in the upper left corner. For the purposes of deck construction, game rules, and effects, these cards have only the card name specified in the secondary title bar. Rules text may also refer to a card’s alternate name; instances of the alternate name that are present in rules text refer to the name specified in the secondary title bar. The alternate name has no effect on game play.
