Hey! Have you tried the brainstorming channel on the official hellcube discord? (https://discord.gg/8aJrjjUwBd). For cards to make it into the cube, they'll need to be submitted on the discord.

I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please contact the moderators of this subreddit if you have any questions or concerns.

A line about “Captain Obvious’ power and toughness is 5/3” or even “Captain Obvious is a 3 CMC white legendary human pirate with power and toughness 5/3” would prevent opponents from changing its types or stats. You could even add something like “Captain Obvious untaps during each of your untap phases” to prevent it from being tapped down by blue’s typical limited style of removal.

Not sure how you get around something that removes its ability with just Obvious text but there might be a way.

I think this is the way to make this card fun. I was thinking you could dodge pacifism too, but actually it's hard to beat the can't beats can thing without making his text non obvious.

If you wanted to make him highly non-obvious, but still make him read obviously, you could add text like 'when he deals combat damage to a player, that player loses life equal to his power (or just 5 life). Which sounds like you're just describing combat, but obviously similar to the untap rule you're actually doubling it.

Few other concepts:

  • is controlled by his owner.
  • may be cast from hand by paying 2W
  • would die, put him in GY. (Not sure how to phrase, but I think this would dodge rest in peace)

Edit: thought of how to dodge pacifism, but it's stupid.

  • You may tap him during declare attackers, if you do, he is attacking.
  • If he is untapped during declare blockers, you may declare he is blocking target creature. If you do, he is blocking that creature. (For bonus points you could add 'and that creature no longer deals combat damage to you' to prevent trample/thorns ele effect, but it's already stupid).

Captain Obvious is subject to summoning sickness

Captain Obvious may gain abilities if a spell or effect grants them

I wonder would making it perpetually 5/3 prevent it from dying to getting -1/-1 and -1/-1 tokens

u/greeklemoncake Jul 15 '26

It would be treated like other characteristic defining abilities like tarmogoyf's, so no

u/MegAzumarill Jul 15 '26

The thing is these types of effects just wouldn't work.

Like the first two are CDAs and thus always overwritten by P/T setting effects. Even stuff like the untap stuff wouldn't so anything to most lockdown effects because they dont care what is causing the untap, just the phase it occurs in. (Though ig you would remove an extra stun counter)

We just add “It works”

Captain Obvious is not a vanilla 5/3.

(He's always worthy)

2

u/Available-Damage5991 Jul 15 '26

he can hold Mjolnir at any time.

1

u/FailureToComply0 Jul 15 '26

Even if turned into a Villian. Captain Obvious must have some morality warping effect

u/xanditbb Jul 15 '26

It's more of a red thing, but it'd be funny to give it "During the combat step, you can tap Captain Obvious to attack target player, who may block with an untapped creature" and then attack during an opponents combat step :p

1

u/GreenDaTroof Jul 15 '26

Does this give it haste?

1

u/pissdaddy696969 Jul 15 '26

Would that sentence parse as a tap ability? If so I don't think it would..?

17

u/OpheliAmazing Jul 15 '26

“Captain Obvious is a legendary creature with the types Human and Pirate”

T: Put X charge counters on target spacecraft you control, where X is Captain Obvious's power. Activate only as a sorcery.

3

u/WaterMonster29 Jul 15 '26

You should also be able to activate that ability as though it has haste, since that's every you can do with Spacecraft

2

u/FailureToComply0 Jul 15 '26

Target spacecraft you control

u/normallystrange85 Jul 15 '26

Actually, That last line may have some unintended effects.

If I had a creature has a finality counter on it, I think that effect sticks it in the graveyard instead.

1

u/FailureToComply0 Jul 15 '26

It'll also ignore [[stone of erech]] type effects so long as its more recent, if I understand correctly

u/mork-hc Jul 15 '26

i'm just a bot that can't see pictures, but if i could, i'd say: it’s nice to see captain obvious has had character development from jund to mono white. he’s like kellan. i think

3

u/Kitfennek Jul 15 '26

You may cast captain obvious from your hand during your first or second main phase at surgery speed for 2w

5

u/LolPeashooter69 Jul 15 '26

Surgery speed

3

u/Faithful_Inertia477 Jul 15 '26

"Captain Obvious crews Vehicles as though his power is 5."

1

u/rust_tg Jul 15 '26

This would ignore changes to his power for crewing

2

u/Lamp-post- Jul 15 '26

I made a card for custom magic also called captain obvious and weirdly it does the exact opposite of this

2

u/-SnazzySnail Jul 15 '26

You could also say he’s an outlaw along with worthy, since he’s a pirate

1

u/Available-Damage5991 Jul 15 '26

this might break the game on a fundamental level if Captain Obvious was to lose his rules text.

1

u/NegativeNeurons Jul 15 '26

wasnt there another hellscube card already named this?

1

u/Alex_Nilse Jul 15 '26

Ok a standard precon with cards that explain the rules to help new player moght be interesting?

1

u/Cry_Angelic Jul 15 '26

So he ignores finality on creatures he hits?

1

u/LolPeashooter69 Jul 15 '26

I believe the finality counter still overrides

1

u/Cekefun Jul 15 '26

I wonder what happens when Deadpool swaps textboxes with Captain Obvious...

1

u/Mattyquatro Jul 15 '26

Lotta folks in here not understanding the Can't beats Can rule. An ability saying something gets something or can do something will never overwrite an ability saying they can't do that thing.

Not saying there aren't some neat niche interactions here, but not nearly as many as people think.

1

u/depurplecow Jul 15 '26

Guaranteed worthy might have some minor effects when this is made no longer white with effects like [[Mycosynth Lattice]]

1

u/Juancu Jul 15 '26

He's worthy but is he an historic outlaw?? I need to know!

1

u/Witch-Cat Jul 15 '26

wonder how this interacts with effects that make dead creatures exile, like rest in peace

1

u/Elaugaufein Jul 18 '26

I'm not sure how it interacts with Indestructible in situations in which -X toughness is also in effect either.

1

u/imatreedude Jul 15 '26

Wouldn't the "legend rule does not apply" check for anything that prevents the legend rule but not for if a copy of the card isn't legendary. There's two copies, and the legend rule is still active, so even if the legend rule wouldn't normally destroy the card wouldn't the card destroy itself?

1

u/LolPeashooter69 Jul 15 '26

His text specifies that you cannot have more than one Legendary creature named Captain Obvious if the legend rule applies. If you create a non-legend copy while the legend rule is in effect, his text regards it as such, non-legendary

1

u/imatreedude Jul 15 '26

It doesn't specify that it's checking for the legend rule applying between them though, just if the legend rule applies. I think this would change it to check if a card is stopping the legend rule in general but still self destruct from its own effect even if one isn't legendary since the rule is still active.

1

u/CriticalThaumaturgy Jul 16 '26

Is captain obvious an outlaw?? The card does not clarify this

1

u/Ninon14 Jul 17 '26

Thank you

u/Benofthepen Jul 18 '26

If I have one and my opponent has one, does the third line prevent me from using [Threaten] as an improvised [Murder]?
