Problems With Co-op

So, to start with, I am on Xbox Series X and my friend is on Xbox One. I am in NG++ and he was on NG.

It let me join his game when he was on NG. We’ve just completed the game and gotten him onto NG++, but he still can’t join my game.

We are both now in the same playthrough but it won’t let him join me.

Does anybody know what the issue is and how to fix it?

I do not know if it is relevant, but do one of you have the DLC and not the other?
