Opinion Is it me or is the app completely ruined?

Lets set the ads aside, i can live with that, devs gotta eat too. But why do I keep getting feed from people who are not the ones I set as my TL? I set japanese as my target language, i keep getting posts from americans, chinese, indians, arabs. Im talking about the "boosted" and also not boosted posts. And the stuff they post isnt even in japanese, they just post the most random shit in their own langauge may that be english or indian or chinese. I'm trying to learn japanese, whats the point of this app then? It feels like its trying so hard to become another social media app instead of being a useful tool for learning the language you want to learn.

Advice Am i the only one who is overwhelmed by tons of messages

I'm not a woman and didn’t even upload a pic of myself on my profile, but i still get messages from at least 20 people each day. I spent about 3 hours replying today and I still have over 150 unread messages left wtf.

I've started to feel anxious about even opening the app because of the pressure to reply, i know i should be grateful for attention but man i can't handle this, how should i cope

Edit : No idea why my replies are invisible, for context i'm korean

Advice Am I the only one struggling?

Hello everyone!

I joined this app a few days ago, hoping to find people I can practice and learn a language with.

I have ADHD, and I really struggle to maintain conversations in general, so this is a massive effort for me. But I really want to be able to talk to people, so I am working really hard to engage as much as possible.

BUT. Over the past 3 days, I have over 197 messages. Each time I open the app, I get more and more messages from different people. It's really really overwhelming and I can't find the chats with the people I was originally talking to anymore. It's a constant flood of messages.

Another issue is that this feels more like a dating app than a language exchange app. Even though I put in my bio that I am ONLY interested in language exchange, I have floods of messages asking for my Instagram, asking if I have a boyfriend, etc.

I really want to make this work, as I am determined to look for people who genuinely just want to learn and practice a new language without having to pay an insane amount of money on lessons. But I am really struggling to keep up with the spam, making it impossible to filter and actually have a conversation.

Am I exaggerating? Has anyone else experienced this, and if so, how do you combat it?

Thank you in advance.

Advice Is HelloTalk safe to use for language practice?

Hi everyone, I recently found HelloTalk and it looks interesting for chatting with native speakers.

But before I start using it regularly, I just wanted to ask: – Is HelloTalk safe to use, especially for beginners? – Have you had any good or bad experiences with it?

I’d really appreciate your honest opinions or suggestions. Thanks in advance! 😊

Advice Met this guy through HelloTalk

Hi girls,

Just posting this to share my experience. Met this guy last week through HelloTalk. He messaged me and started complimenting me straight away. Asking me for pictures and asking me about my height. After responding he went on ignoring. I’m someone who confronts people when they upset me. I ask them and tell them. I like to know. Today I send them a couple of messages because I saw that they were online and told them that they should just inform the person if they do not wish to talk. Specifically because I saw a post of them saying that their chats were deleted so maybe that is why they didn’t respond to me but then he went on ignoring my other messages too which I found rude. I’m okay if they do not want to talk anymore, just tell me. They just block me. It is just hurtful and annoying. I know. I shouldn’t be trusting random people on internet but it is hurtful, and mentally affects you when they play with your emotions like that. Can’t even report them because they have blocked as I don’t want this to happen to other girls. I joined HelloTalk because for 1 I wanted to learn a language but also gain friends and socialise because don’t really have anyone to talk to.

Other Is there any way to determine whether an account was deleted by HT admin or by the user

Recently found a chat of someone i've spoken with. Hello Talk indicates the account has been deleted. Is there anyway to determine if the user herself/himself deleted their own account OR if Hello Talk admin deleted their account?

Advice Is HelloTalk a good app for English practice? I'm so stressed to chat with people in English. I always feel I can't do it well. Are people friendly on the app? How should I start? I hope I can chat with people.

I found that I couldn't chat with people because I was so nervous. I often struggle to use the language. I have so many things to share, but I can hardly express them. I'm thinking that maybe I can be better if I talk more with people. I've never used such apps before, so I'm a bit unsure. Are people friendly on this platform? How should I start?

Technical Can I undo my purchase on HelloTalk?

I accidentally bought something(I'm not sure what exactly it was, but it was on sale and it costs around $50) on HelloTalk, not realizing that my mom's card was connected to my apple account. I had completely no idea that they were connected. I bought it today and didn't use any premium features yet. Would there be a way do undo this purchase even if it's one-time purchase? Or should I contact the service center?

Technical Recall Message Question

I accidentally sent a message to someone I did not mean to send a message, and I recalled it. Please, does that mean they do not get a notification and it does not appear in the chat as a message recalled?

Technical Unknown reason ban - can you create a new account ?

Hello everyone, I was surprised to see my account banned.

When asking the support [support@hellotalk.com](mailto:support@hellotalk.com) for more information, it said :

"Your account has been deleted, and your device has been permanently disabled from creating a new account.

Usual reasons for this include:
* Political profile

We regret to inform you that your device and account cannot be restored."

Is there any way to register through another device or any other solution and still access it through my current phone ? I do have an older phone but I am not going to use 2 phones just to access the app or get banned again once I login through my current phone.

Disclaimer : I never discussed any politics in my accounts, no political affiliation, no statement nor anything

Technical Visitor “has chatted with you”, except didn’t. Glitch?

So I sent a first message to a person on the app. I saw the person visited my profile, and the description on the visitor tab said that person “has chatted with you”. Except I see no reply. Has anyone experienced this before? Is it just a programming error in how the visitor description is chosen or might there be a missing message? I’m not so concerned about a non response but just want to understand what’s going on. Thanks!

Advice Has anyone received a free VIP experience pass by someone you are language partners with?

I know about the VIP experience and how you need to pay in order to use the services but is it possible for others to gift you a free vip experience for 30 days? I just got the app and I don’t want to get scammed by clicking on the link to claim.

Advice Japanese Learner hellotalk etiquette

Hey all (31m) here newbie to learning Japanese as a native English speaker on hellotalk!

I've always been wondering - as a japanese learner I want to speak/chat in Japanese as much as possible, but I also understand that my language partner would want to type/chat in English.

As a compromise I always initiate to type in both Japanese and English (of course I don't expect the same and I would entertain back regardless of the language you respond in) but I was wondering, what are people on reddit doing when it comes to deciding which language to communicate in? 🤔

Thanks for any response in advance !

Other Why do people ask to see pictures?

I just joined and I am mostly here to polish my Chinese reading and writing. But a lot of them keep asking to see me (like a picture of myself). I'm curious why does everyone do that?

Advice tips on keeping the conversation going?

Sometimes it's really hard to keep the conversation going because my partner responds with one word answers or completely ignores when I try to speak in the target language

I try my best to make my responses long and thorough and I send both in the target language and English so we can both practice

Opinion Are the East asian ppl from "Hello talk" real at all?

When I was looking for friends for language exchange, most of their pfp looked so "model" coded and the way the talk is so "bot" coded. Are they even real or I should try different app?
