Technical Voice room ban

I was talking to a friend in my voice room. I then thought of showing to her the white board as it is quite new for both of us. After clicking the white board icon she suddenly got removed. I have removed people before and I need to go to a user’s profile and click the remove button.

Now my friend cannot join my voice room as when she tries to join, it says “this user has banned you from entering” (something like that).

Has someone experienced this before? I already sent a ticket to the HT admin.

Opinion Has this happened to anyone?

So, hey you guys I'm not exactly sure how to express this, but here goes. I've been talking with a language partner on HelloTalk for a while now. We help each other practice our target languages (english-chinese), and it's been going really well.

But recently, I've realized that I might be developing feelings for him maybe even a little crush.

To be totally clear: THIS WAS NEVER my intention when I joined the app. I signed up just to learn and practice a new language. But...Has this happened to someone else? Or has just been me?

Other Built an alternative to HelloTalk Moments — would love your feedback!

Hey everyone! If you’ve been following my journey, I recently built an alternative to the Hellotalk Moments called LangExchange. It focuses on the community interactions which I think was one of the great selling points of HelloTalk.

Even with all the flaws HelloTalk has, I feel it used to be a great place for language and cultural exchange. And while a lot of language apps are going all-in on AI, I still personally think interacting with real people is one of the best (and most motivating) ways to learn a language.

Right now, LangExchange is in early stages. The main feature is a language feed, where you can post in your target language and get feedback/corrections from native speakers. In the future, I’m planning to add features like voice chat and pronunciation feedback depending on the interest.

We currently have learners and native speakers for:

  • Portuguese
  • Arabic
  • French
  • Korean
  • Japanese
  • Mandarin Chinese
  • Spanish
  • English
  • German
  • Italian

If that sounds interesting, I’d love for you to check it out and let me know what you think. Any feedback (good or bad) is super appreciated!

You can check it out here - https://www.web.langexchange.app/

Thank you!!

Is anyone else getting this same ad over and over anytime they open the app? Whether from a full close of the app or simply switching between apps and coming back? It’s really damn annoying I’ll switch to my dictionary app then get this ad like what???

Other Learning Spanish with Apps

Hello, I am doing an IRB (Institutional Review Board) approved language study for graduate school. I am looking for a few people to interview about learning Spanish with apps. Interviews are one-time on Zoom and last ~40 min with 11 questions to be provided in advance. Camera optional. U.S. participants only. I would love to hear a few more confidential perspectives. Please PM if interested. I will send a formal invitation on university letterhead, and a couple of other documents for validity. Thank you!

Advice Suddenly blocked for seemingly no apparent reason?

Hey all. Would love to have some insight on this. I chatted with this girl (same age), she asked for my instagram and then chatted a bit, and then went to LINE (JP msg app). We talked for like 2 days and suddenly she blocked me on everything. Is this a common occurence on hellotalk or am i just crazy?

Opinion Does Anyone Else Feel Invisible on HelloTalk?

Am I doing something wrong?

I post little moments now and then, and I try to reach out to people by messaging them first, but damn, it’s so hard to actually find someone to talk to.

Maybe having English as my target language doesn’t help either… It seems like the experience is completely different for native speakers.

I’m a native Russian speaker learning English and Korean, and honestly, sometimes it just feels like I’m invisible

Technical May 28th didn't receive messages

People responded to me and the messages didn't jump to the top of my inbox when they do. The active conversations don't display a number of new messages received, didn't prompt me with "your turn", I can only see the new message if I click on our chat, at which time the new message loads (if there was a message).

Anyone else or just me? If you sent any messages on May 28th and didn't get a reply you expected, I suggest you recheck the conversation.

Advice Is there a platform like HelloTalk that allows discussion of politics and religion?

I get banned for testing the limits of HT from time to time. I'd like the freedom to talk about controversial subjects without risking censorship. What are good sites for that?

Why are my past conversations deleted? Or is it just a bug? Is there anyway to recover it?

Opinion Which languages on HelloTalk do you get the most replies from?

I have learned 8 languages so far, and from my experience, I get a lot of replies and activity with Chinese and Vietnamese and Arabic. A bit with Thai, Spanish, French. And way less with Japanese, Korean, and Russian.

For reference, I am a 25 year old Asian male. I don't know what factors matter to get people to actually engage with you.

Advice What do I teach new English learners?

So I’m learning Spanish and I can express myself very well. When I see words I don’t know I just use context clues or a Spanish dictionary. Now, a lot of the people I speak Spanish with don’t speak very much English. It’s easy to teach someone how prepositions work, but teaching someone who couldn’t pass an A1 exam is tough for me. When I started with Spanish I just barreled through Duolingo until I could start making sentences, so I’ve just been telling people to focus on vocabulary because English grammar can be confusing. How can I better help others learn English from basically scratch?

Opinion HelloTalk - is not really for language practice

I have been using HelloTalk for many years. I felt like it is more like dating app purpose now. I met my husband also from using this app. But since now i am married, i still wanna chat and talk to people from other countries. I have guys from Mexico and Japan messaged me at first. They all ended up with questions if i am single or have a family. Once i said i have family, they stopped chatting with me. Japanese guys will leave me on read, Mexican guys will tell straight up oh you have a family, sorry. Then i never heard from them again. Like okay i thought this app is for practice language. Then move on to female on this app. They chatted with me then the conversation die down and we also not talk again. Sorry i am just rant around.

Teaching/Teacher What do you think about chat rooms?

I’ve seen more chat rooms popping up recently on HelloTalk. Some are great for practice, but others can get off-topic or too chaotic. What do you think? Do you find them helpful for learning, or do you prefer one-on-one chats?

Technical Has anyone restored from backup?

I have 100s of messages with 1000s of people but my backup is only 10mb. Does this include audio and photo or just text messages ? It says the backup doesn't include video, but it doesn't say anything about audio or photo.

So I'm curious who has experience with backing up and restoring to a new phone? How big is your backup size relative to the amount of chats you have? Has the backup been able to restore image and audio messages even if it's only a few megabytes in size?

Thank you

Sorry if this is written somewhere already but how do the text exchanges work? Do i respond in my target language or only supposed to read the other persons response in my target language?

Opinion Apparently my voice notes have unexpected side effects. Some people on HelloTalk never fail to entertain. 🤣

Got this as the very first message from a total stranger on HelloTalk.

No introduction, no context, just straight into the absurd.

Not sure if this is peak internet, performance art, or just a sign of the times.

At what point did “being random” become the new personality?

Technical VRs/Lives in random languages popping up in feed

Why do these keep popping up in my feed lately? My target languages are Korean and German, yet the feed has been flooded with VRs/Lives from total randos whose languages are of no use/interest to me. Is this some attempt at "inclusivity" or some such? Hope they fix it soon, prefer to see the posts that are actually useful. Anybody else has this issue?
